Love is in the Air . . .
More than anything, we want kids to understand that Jesus loves them and in return share that love with others. Throughout this month, ProvKIDS will be centered around stories from Jesus life that showed examples this love for everyone. We will also look at how sometimes we think we are showing love by we are missing the point as in the story of Mary and Martha. The time we spend with others can speak volumes to show them how much we love them. We will learn more about how all people are created in God's image and that God loves them all. We in turn are called to love all people, even when we don't get along with others. Praying for those we don't get along with is one way to love someone we don't feel like loving. In our last week, we will look at ways that we can love God. Sometimes it’s hard for kids to understand how they can love God. We hope that through this story of the woman who anointed Jesus, they’ll start to realize that loving God can look like singing worship songs, but it can also mean doing their best, being generous to others, or putting others first. We’re all different, so we hope to help kids understand how they can love God individually with everything they’ve got!
Loving God and Others through Serving
Sundays, our 5th graders are back to serving throughout ProvKIDS with a mini lesson focused around the same theme and scripture as mentioned above and below. These service opportunities are expanding into sharing their learning about the armor of God with kindergarten and first graders the first week of January and some new opportunities to share a Bible story with our babies and toddlers.
If you are interested in sharing the love of God through serving others, we are looking to expand our team of leaders in ProvKIDS and would be thrilled to have you. You can click on the box above, stop by the ProvKIDS Welcome desk or email Lindsay at lwilliamson@prov.church or Liz Broyles lbroyles@prov.church .
Try This . . .
In the Morning . . .
Before your child gets up, write one thing you love about your child. At the end of the month, your child will have an entire heart filled with words of love!
Take it further and have one heart for each member of your family for all the family to add to throughout the month and remind us to love others as Jesus loved us.
On the Move...
Find ways to show love while on the move!
As you drive, talk in the car about one way you can show love to others while you are driving from place to place.
Some ideas could be, listening to a worship song, paying for someone’s meal behind you, or praying as a family, making a card to send to someone else, changing the words to a tune you know to make up a love song about a family member.
At Dinner Time . . .
- Say the first thing that pops in your mind to finish this thought: I love ____. Why do you think that was the first thing you thought?
- What makes you feel loved?
- What keeps you from connecting with others like in the story of Mary and Martha?
- When is it hard to love someone?
- Who is someone in your life right now that is hard to love? What have you done recently to show that person love?
- What is something you did today to show Jesus love to others?
- What worship song makes you feel like you are loving God when you sing it? (or any song)
- What are other ways you can show love to God?
In Prayer...
Some people just seem harder to love than others. But we are all made by God, in His image every person matters to Him. That means that we are called to love everyone. But you don’t have to do it on your own. God can give you His love, even for those people in your life who are hard to get along with. Pray that God would help you to show love to the difficult people in your life.
Literature Connection
Desmond and the Very Mean World
Based on a real-life experience in South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu' s own childhood. Just after receiving a new bicycle, young Desmond goes for a ride and encounters a group of white boys who shout a very mean word at him. Upset and angry he stops by for a visit with Father Trevor who listens to his account of what happened. He tells Desmond that if he gives in to hatred and revenge, nothing will change and the cycle of hatred will go on forever. Forgiveness is a better path. "When you forgive someone, you free yourself from what they have said and done."
The Good Samaritan and Other Parables
Use the parables of Jesus to talk with your child about how Jesus illustrated how to love others.
In simple, lyrical language, appropriate for young readers, dePaola introduces the best-known parables of Jesus, including the Mustard Seed, the Prodigal Son, and the Lost Sheep.
Jesus Calling for Kids
Devotions written as if Jesus is speaking directly to a child's heart. Each day offers and example of how to love God, how God loves us, and how to love others.
Based on her original Jesus Calling, this version has been adapted in a language and fashion that kids and tweens can relate to their everyday lives.
