Crescent Lake Connection
Newsletter of Crescent Lake School: Issue 4 - Oct. 16, 2023
Originality in October!
Our first grading period, the interim of Trimester I, will close this Friday, October 20, and Interim I reports will be emailed home on October 27. Parent conferences are currently being scheduled in November and we are collecting Winter Sports forms. This newsletter has many links to forms with information about upcoming events and programs for this year which is exciting for us and for students! If there are ever questions about any event or program, please reach out to us by contacting your child's teacher, emailing me, or calling our main office of school. We want all of our students to have opportunities to participate in our activities and programs; please let us know if we can help you and your child with any questions or if there are financial hardships. As we say at Crescent Lake School, we are a community....an otter family.

It’s the time of year to begin preparing for our Winter Sports Program 2024. All students at CLS participate in Winter Sports and this year students will choose from snowboarding, skiing, ice skating or snowshoeing. Our skiers and snowboarders will be going back to Gunstock in Gilford. Our skaters will be going to the Pop Whalen Ice and Arts Center this year and our snowshoers will explore the grounds around CLS. Students will eat lunch at school before leaving for their Winter Sports activity.
The CLS Winter Sports dates are the four Thursdays in January: January 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th. (Make-up Day if Winter Sports is canceled: February 1st)
If your child will be skiing or snowboarding, the prices jump quickly for Gunstock if you miss the initial deadline so please look carefully at the dates. There is also a strict deadline to sign up for skiing/snowboarding at Gunstock. There are no exceptions if you miss the deadline. The link to signup online with Gunstock is provided on the Student Activities tab on the CLS website and at the bottom of the main page on our CLS website. There is also a link there that will provide step-by-step directions on how to register. The button below will bring you to the Winter Sports page on our website. Please reach out to Mrs. Rapoza at crapoza@sau49.org if you have any questions about our programs and reach out to Mr. Beaverstock at bbeaverstock@sau49.org if you are in need of financial assistance.
Winter Sports forms have been sent home with all students. You can also call the main office or click on the title of this section or HERE for a copy of the form. Congratulations to Ms. Rogers 5th Grade Class for earning the CLS Snowflake Award by returning all of their forms first!
Students are 'gaga' over our new Gaga Ball Pit! Thank you PTO for this donation to our playground!
All students have been informed that the walls of the Gaga Ball Pit are not meant for sitting or leaning against. Students will put their hands on the wall to start (or restart) a game and to temporarily steady themselves. Please help keep our new Gaga Ball Pit area available by refraining from sitting or leaning on the wall.
Thank you PTO and to all CLS families for your donations and generosity!
Halloween Parade at CLS
We will hold a Halloween parade on Tuesday, October 31, starting at 2:30 pm at Crescent Lake School. The parade will wind through the halls of school and wrap around to the front of school. Any parents or family members wishing to view the parade should be outside in front of CLS by 2:25 pm and can line the front sidewalk as the parade of students marches around the school to the main entrance. In order to participate in the parade the following rules apply to all costumes:
- Students are not allowed to wear their costume during the day prior to the afternoon parade. Students will be allowed time in the afternoon after 2:15 pm to put on a costume they have for the parade.
- All costumes must be school appropriate. Costumes cannot be bloody or have weapons. The length and coverage of clothing needs to meet normal school dress regulations. If students are wearing something questionable as inappropriate, they will be given an opportunity to change or address the issue or concern.
- This is an optional event. Students who do not wish to participate can stay in their homeroom (or a neighboring classroom) and help cheer participating students as they walk by their classroom.
- Students will need to change out of costumes before their bus ride or transportation home.
We are looking forward to having a fun time with students for the holiday afternoon.
This event is sponsored by the CLS PTO and we need your help!
We are looking for:
- Use of large/yard size Halloween decorations or inflatables for the event
- Donations of bags of candy
- Donations of glowsticks/bracelets
- Volunteers to host a trunk (please complete the form below)
Donations can be dropped off at the CLS main office. Thank you for your support!
To host a trunk, please complete the form in the flyer that will be sent home with students tomorrow (or click HERE or on the title of this section). For more information or questions about the event, please contact Cara Parent at cara.lamoureux@gmail.com

JumpRope is the grading program that our teachers use to track and record student progress towards our grade level curriculum standards. Attached to the link below is a brief overview of what JumpRope is and how it works for the parent/guardian viewpoint. All parents/guardians should have received a welcome email to log in the JumpRope system. Our Curriculum Director, Dr. Katey Hills, is in the process of creating a series of short videos on various features of JumpRope and competency-based grading that will be posted and shared in the coming weeks. If you have not received the welcome email and login information, please reach out to our Dr. Hills at khills@sau49.org
At the end of each trimester of school, we will be presenting students who have earned a 3.0 or higher in all Work Habits in the summary section of their report card the Otter Pride Award. Families can track their child's progress towards earning the Otter Pride Award by logging into JumpRope.

Interested in Volunteering at CLS?
Help our Community Succeed!
We are still in need of a CLS staff position helping prepare and serve meals in our CLS kitchen. If you are interested in applying for this position, please reach out to Brian Beaverstock at bbeaverstock@sau49.org for details.
Can't commit to work five days a week to help? That's okay!! While we are searching for a candidate, we would gladly accept regular volunteers! All volunteers must be fingerprinted and go through the school district background check procedures. Once approved, we could use support for serving our hot lunch meals. Lunches at CLS begin at 11:30 am and typically end by 12:45 pm. If you can consistently help serve on one day a week, we otter have you here and lend a hand! Please contact Brian Beaverstock if you are able to volunteer and help - even on a short term or once a week basis. Thank you!
