BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2024 THEME
Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme.
The Black History Month 2024 theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” explores the key influence African Americans have had in the fields of "visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression."

LIGHTS ON! COUPONS
Our SRO, Nico, has a new book of Lights On coupons in his office for any students, families, or staff that may be in need. The coupon will help replace headlights, tail lights, brake lights and turn signals up to $250. There is absolutely no recordkeeping, income requirements or paperwork to be filled out. If someone needs a coupon, they get a coupon. You can visit www.lightsonus.org to find participating auto shops. Information on the program, (ALC students, please ask Jean for more information, we will request coupon's from Officer Nico):
"After the tragic death of Philando Castile, the MicroGrants Board of Directors discussed ways that they could prevent such a terrible event from happening again. MicroGrants already had connections to low-income drivers, auto repair shops, and law enforcement. MicroGrants CEO Don Samuels, former Public Safety Chair of the Minneapolis City Council, called a number of police departments to ask whether they were interested in joining the program. Since then, the program has grown dramatically as our story has spread. Lights On! continues to grow rapidly as interested law enforcement agencies, auto shops, cities, and nonprofits contact MicroGrants and ask to join."
Lights On! can help transform a negative, costly stop for an equipment violation into a healing moment between an officer and a community member, helping:
Improve police and community relations
Provide a positive path for low-income drivers
Put safer cars on the road
Offer a new approach to societal problems
Better prioritize community resources
Opting Your Student out of School Photographs and "Directory Information"
Under state law, “directory information” may be released to the public without permission of the student, parent or guardian. Directory information includes a student’s name, school of attendance or grade level, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, diploma and awards received, photograph, and the most recent previous educational agency or institution attended. It also includes the name of the student’s designated guardian. Directory information does not include a student’s home address, telephone number, email address or other personal contact information, or data that reference religion, race, color, social position or nationality.
If a student or parent/guardian does not want some or all of this information to be made public, they must complete Form 515F (Directory Information Opt-Out Form) and submit the form to their child’s school each school year. Fridley Public Schools designates certain records as directory information to be used only for school or district-approved programs, publications, yearbooks, cablecasts, webcasts, athletic teams, clubs, activities and other public presentations. Those records include but are not limited to student: photographs, videos and other visual representations.
