LCPS COMMITMENT TO EQUITY
LCPS centers equity as one of its foundational core values. For our community, equity means being committed to providing a safe, supportive, inclusive, affirming, and respectful environment for each student and staff member that fosters success, growth, and academic rigor.
The cultivation of this environment requires us to reject and condemn the use of hate speech, racial slurs, antisemitism, and any action or behavior that discriminates based on race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, orientation, gender expression, socio-economic status, religion, ability, or other cultural identities or expression. Such noninclusive speech, behavior, and actions do not reflect who we are as a learning community.
We embrace and value the unique identities, backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and needs of each student and employee. Celebrating our diversity is important and helps define us as a school division. Demonstrating the courage to address inequities and remove barriers represents an integral part of our collective effort towards excellence in education. Equity is the vehicle that leads to greater access, opportunity, and equality so that each student is
empowered to make meaningful contributions to the world.
CELEBRATING OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY!
Dear Parents,
I am continually impressed by our students, staff, and community and how closely connected we are around the common goal of educating our children. It is in this spirit that I am excited to let you know that on February 22 we will be celebrating the rich diversity of our school, community, and world through our Journey To Success event. This year's theme is: "A World of Learning!"
Each of our grade level teams has identified a special curriculum related project that they will be completing during the month of February. These projects, which are listed below, will be on display at this event. You will be blown away by the incredible work of our students and staff and I hope you will mark your calendars now to come and join us!
Grade Level Project Topics For Journey To Success
Pre-K/Kindergarten - Showing Kindness To Animals
First Grade - Animal Habitats
Second Grade - Famous Americans
Third Grade - Comparing Ancient Rome to Ancient Greece
Fourth Grade - Animals in the Native American Languages of Virginia.
Fifth Grade - Science Is All Around Us!
We want to encourage you, as parents and members of the EMES community, to get involved as well by highlighting your cultural heritage. Information and a special activity will be sent home on Friday February 2 with your child in their Friday Folder. Here are some ways that parents and community members can be an integral part of this event:
- Sign up to host a table at the event. You will be provided with a table and you may decorate this with artifacts celebrating your cultural heritage. You would be ask to man the table and share information about your table with your visitors and students.
- Bring a favorite ethnic main dish or dessert to share in our International Cafe.
- Would you like to share a music/dance experience celebrating your culture? You may sign up for a 30 minutes slot in our music room for your performance.
This year's event is truly going to be the best one yet! I am so excited for your to see the amazing work of our students, and for your participation. Are you reading for A World of Learning?
Expecting Success!

IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE EMES HOUSE SYSTEM!
The addition of the House System as a major component of our Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports (PBIS) practices has been a fruitful and engaging one for students and staff. As with all new initiatives, we are constantly monitoring, gathering feedback, and reflecting on how to make things even better for our students. Our PBIS committee meets monthly to review our entire system and to recommend changes. During our November and December meetings we were especially reflective about our House System. As a result, the following changes are being instituted upon our return to school in January.
- We will shift from weekly to monthly house meetings on one Tuesday per month.
- Students and staff are to continue to wear their house shirts every Tuesday in honor of house spirit!
- Our new monthly house meetings will be cross grade level meetings were students from grades K-5 will meet together as a house.
- Monthly house meetings will incorporate a short focus lesson, house pride activities, and a special monthly house challenge or activity.
The dates for our monthly House Meetings are listed below. These will be well publicized to students and weekly in the Sunday Scoop for parents.

VALENTINE'S DAY!
In keeping with current practices designed to protect the health and safety of all children, elementary students in Loudoun County Public Schools are not permitted to distribute candy or other food items to classmates. As Valentine’s Day approaches, it is important for parents to understand that food or candy brought to school by students, including candy attached to Valentine’s Day cards, will be returned to the parent. Children are permitted to share Valentine's Day cards with each other, but they cannot give out food or candy.
Grade 2 CogAT Testing!
All grade two students will participate in the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) on February 6, 7, & 8. There is nothing you need to do to prepare your child for this assessment except to make sure that they get a good night's sleep, have a good breakfast, and arrive to school on time. For additional informtion about the CogAT please contact jennifer.haggerty@lcps.org.
