Greetings Viking Families,

We are down to the last 20 days of school (10 for seniors). Please encourage students to finish strong. There is still time to get work done, raise grades and earn credits.Spring sports and activities are wrapping up. We are proud of all that our students have accomplished!

As the school year comes to a close, speak with your students about behavior expectations. We do not want students to make impulsive decisions that have a lasting impact on their educational journey. Safety continues to be our top priority and we need everyone to be their best selves and make a positive contribution to our school community. Now more than ever it is important to Be a Viking—Be Responsible, Respectful, and Accountable!

Please review the newsletter to celebrate student excellence and explore employment and enrichment opportunities over the summer. We look forward to honoring the graduating class of 2023 on May 23rd at 7pm at Baxter Arena. Stay tuned for the live stream link for those unable to attend in person. We will share it via social media, the school website, and email.

Electronic devices should be out of sight unless used for a teacher directed learning activity. For students not meeting expectations the following steps will be taken:

· 1st Violation: Warning (conversation with the student)

· 2nd Violation: Parent/Guardian Contact

· 3rd Violation: Discipline Referral to the Administrator

1064X - Unknown Variable (Ivan Aviles-Sebastian, Bryton Bower, Chase Langan and Lore Reick) represent Omaha North and Nebraska at the 2023 VEX Robotics World Championship April 25-27th in Dallas Texas. 1064X put up one of the best World Championship performances of all of the Nebraska teams and any Viking Robotics team that has competed at Worlds. Within their division, 1064X held onto a record of 9-1 at the end of the Qualification Rounds and finished Ranked 4th. The team went on to win their first Elimination Match, before having to re-run their Quarter Final Match due to a very controversial call. In the re-run they fell just short of beating the eventual division champion.

Unknown Variable finished 119th in the Skills Challenge out of over 800 teams.

Congratulations to Vivian Landis for placing 8th in Newspaper Feature Writing. She also earned Runner Up for Nebraska State Journalist of the Year. Way to go, Vivian!

Congrats to the Engineering & Design SAME (Society of American Military Engineers) student group who placed in every category at this year's SAME competition!

The Vikings dominated both land and air during the CREATE US Open Drone World Championships March 30-April 1st at the Iowa West Field House. D1064Z (Azzy Carr, Christian Gallager, and Octavius Pearson) finished 5th in the qualification rounds and went through the Finals to become the World Runner-Up. D1064A (Ivan Aviles-Sebastian and Cristofer Torres Gaitan) finished 3rd in the Solo Flight competition, finished 3rd in qualification, then went on to finish the Finals with the highest score, earning them the World Championship. D1064A also won the Honor Award which is the highest award a team can earn at a CREATE Drones Competition.

Two teams represented Omaha North High during the CREATE US Open Robotics Competition at the Iowa West Field House March 30th - April 1st. Both teams (O1064A and O1064X) finished in the Top 20 after the Qualification Rounds. O1064, comprised of Bryton Bower, Jonathan Flores-Mondragon, Abdias Marroquin, and Noah Richardson, used their number 2 seed to start the Finals to propel themselves to the number one stop, a new world record score and the Tournament Championship. O1064A also worked with teams from around the world in the Mega Alliance Challenge to bring home back to back Championships for the Vikings.

Principles of Engineering Students participated in the 2023 American Society of Civil Engineering Truss Bustin' Competition. They designed, built and tested their trusses with how much force the truss could withstand. Grayson Caricofe built a truss that was 20.8 grams. His truss withstood 71 lbs. of force before it broke. He won the competition and a monetary prize. Great Job Grayson!

Congrats to Azzie Carr (12), who won 4 special recognition awards at the NJAS science fair, received Top 5, and qualifies for nationals next February!

Congratulations to the following students who placed in the Omaha World Herald's Academic Team competition. This year, Nebraska schools sent in 641 nomination forms. To qualify to be nominated, a student needed to be #1 or #2 in their graduation class and/or 32 or higher on the ACT. Go Vikings!

She was recognized by Omaha West Rotary as the Outstanding Citizen from Omaha North High School! The organization annually recognizes one top senior from each high school across the Omaha Metro. Way to make us Viking Proud, Nayera!

Ms. Murphy was recognized as the NCPA Outstanding Educator; Myrianna Bakou was recognized for her four years of NCPA service.

Samara Luther was awarded the NCPA Pillar of Excellence Award.

The Math Squad recently competed at the Northwest Missouri State Competition in Maryville, Missouri. Participants were Bowen Steffen, Nayera Abdessalam, Sophia Kolb, Audra Morrison, Ella Holtzclaw, Ellie Yamamoto, Joe Kinsella, Carlo Santos, Yasmine Alhejaj, Mani Senanayaka. All 10 mathematicians earned an honor in one of the many categories. Overall Top 10 performances were turned in by Nayera, Audra, Bowen, and Sofia. Good time was had by all!

Joe Kinsella and Nyan Aung recently competed in the City Chess Championships. They were able to compete because they were North's 1st and 2nd Boards meaning they ended up being top 2 chess players. The competition was fierce and both players were successful. Joe ended up winning 2 mathches and Nyan won 1. Congrats to the players!

North students Legacy Durham (11), Mary Worshek (11), and Kyra Norris (10) attended the metro area's first Dinner With a Scientist event hosted by Bellevue University. During the event students had the opportunity to eat with and then talk to local scientists including a computer programmer and the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo's reproductive biologist.

In the culmination of the AP Literature and Composition classes' Shakespeare unit, students attended Film Streams' "School to Screen" showing and discussion of the film Ophelia, on April 25th

Current and upcoming student ambassadors had the opportunity to attend a workshop hosted by Youth Frontiers. Students strengthened their leadership skills and self-confidence through a series of engaging, hands-on activities. North was one of 4 OPS schools represented at the workshop.

Data and Statistics students performed a significance test to assess whether they could really taste the rainbow. There has been a huge debate whether or not different colors of skittle actually taste different. Students worked in pairs (one taster and one recorder) and tried 5 skittles without using the sense of taste and smell. Our alternative hypothesis was that our proportion of correctly guessed skittles would be greater than 0.20 (proportion guessed just by chance since 5 flavors). Both classes found (sample proportion) to be larger than 0.20. After running through our 4-step process of conducting a significance test, our conclusion was because the P-value of , we reject . And we do have convincing evidence that this class can taste the rainbow.

North High juniors took a college tour of Creighton University and Nebraska Methodist College thanks to a grant from EducationQuest.

The 3rd annual Gene Haynes Open is scheduled for Sunday, June 4th at 10am at Lakeshore Golf Course. Please note that any athletic or activity group that participates can use this as a fundraising opportunity. See below:

The payouts to the participating groups are for the full amounts paid in by a hole sponsor or for a foursome. For example, if a hole sponsorship was $150.00 and a foursomes registration fee was $400.00 the participating group that brought those two items in would receive $550.00.

Homework Helproom is a free tutoring program at North High School where students can receive help with their math, science, social studies, or English classes. It is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the library from 3:00 till 5:00. Students need to be in the library by 3:15. If you have any questions email Mr. Anglen at tim.anglen@ops.org

The District is recruiting current high school students to assist with reinforcing reading and math lessons for our elementary students. The District will be hosting NLL at 24 elementary sites across our city and has a goal of hiring a student intern for every classroom.

Please note, qualified students must be:

• 16 years or older by June 6th
• In good academic standing with a 2.0 GPA or above
• Be a positive role model for younger children
