Cedar Hill ISD Families,
As citizens, we often have a lot to say about policies that affect our communities. It’s easy to get lost in the user comments under a news story online. It’s wonderful that we have the First Amendment right to express these opinions. But the only way we truly put our opinions to action is when we exercise our right to vote.
It’s even more important in a local election where a community’s trajectory can come down to a margin of fewer than 100 votes – a smaller number than the citizens that live on a single street, in some cases.
Today is the first day of Early Voting for the Cedar Hill ISD Voter Approved Tax Rate Election (VATRE), or Prop A on the ballot. Early voting, which runs through Friday, November 3, will take place at Cedar Hill High School (1 Longhorn Boulevard in Cedar Hill) and the Alan E. Sims Recreation Center (310 East Parkerville Road in Cedar Hill).
Early Voting Hours are:
· October 23-27 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
· October 28 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
· October 29 Noon-6 p.m.
· October 30-November 3 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
Election Day is Tuesday, November 7. Making a plan to vote early can help ensure that you vote, in the event that something comes up on Election Day.
Why the Need for Prop A (VATRE)?
At the present moment, Cedar Hill ISD educators are paid significantly lower than their counterparts at neighboring districts, starting today voters have the opportunity to decide to increase teacher pay.
- The district has spent the last 5 years tracking teacher retention and resignations. Data shows that 53% of CHISD teachers will leave the district within 2 years, and the number one reason they leave the district is due to pay or promotion.
Cedar Hill ISD’s teacher turnover rate is 28% compared to the state average of 13%.
Texans, through the actions of their state representatives, have emphasized the importance of having a police officer at every campus with the passage of House Bill 3. Unfortunately, the state only provided a fraction of the funding for this mandate. Starting today, voters in Cedar Hill will decide whether to fund public safety in our schools.
- CHISD is expected to receive approximately $225,000 from the state for House Bill 3 to fulfill mandates.
- To hire 9 additional officers and provide medical benefits, the district needs an additional $623,200.
Exercising your right to vote is one of the most important things you can do in your lifetime. I encourage all Cedar Hill residents:
- Take a few minutes to learn the facts about Prop A (VATRE) by visiting https://www.chisd.net/domain/4116
- Take 5 people with you to the early voting or election day locations.
- Please remember to Vote!
Have a great week!

Preparing Your Child for College
"Preparing Your Child for College: A Guide for K-12 Parents"
As a parent of a K-12 student, you play a vital role in your child's educational journey, and college readiness is a significant part of that journey. College is a time of immense growth and self-discovery, and it's essential to start preparing your child early. In this article, we'll explore the key steps and considerations to help ensure your child is well-prepared for the transition to college.
Foster a Love for Learning
The foundation of college readiness begins with a genuine love for learning. Encourage your child's curiosity, support their interests, and provide them with opportunities to explore a wide range of subjects. When students are passionate about learning, they are more likely to excel in high school and beyond.
Develop Strong Study Skills
Effective study habits are a cornerstone of success in college. Help your child develop good time management, organization, and study skills. Teach them the importance of setting aside dedicated time for homework and study, as well as how to break down complex tasks into manageable steps.
Encourage Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving
Colleges and universities value students who can think critically, analyze information, and solve complex problems. Engage your child in discussions that promote critical thinking, and encourage them to explore diverse viewpoints and perspectives. Additionally, provide opportunities for them to solve real-world problems, fostering their problem-solving skills.
Emphasize Effective Communication
Effective communication is crucial in college, both in written and oral forms. Encourage your child to express themselves clearly and confidently. Reading and writing regularly can help improve their communication skills, as can participation in debates, public speaking, or writing clubs.
Plan for College Admissions
It's never too early to start thinking about the college admissions process. Research colleges, explore admission requirements, and understand the importance of standardized tests like the SAT or ACT. Consider the extracurricular activities and community service your child can engage in to build a strong application.
Financial Preparedness
College can be a significant financial investment. Start saving early and explore different financial aid options, scholarships, and grants. Teaching your child about budgeting and financial responsibility is also essential for their college years.
Encourage Independence
College life requires a degree of independence and self-reliance. Encourage your child to take on responsibilities at home and school. Teach them essential life skills such as cooking, laundry, and managing their own schedules. This will help prepare them for the independence they'll need in college.
Support Emotional Well-being
The transition to college can be emotionally challenging. Offer emotional support, create an open dialogue about their fears and expectations, and emphasize the importance of seeking help when needed. Encourage a healthy balance between academic and personal life.
Visit College Campuses
Visiting college campuses can provide your child with a better understanding of what to expect in the future. Take advantage of college fairs and campus tours to help your child envision their college experience.
Keep the Lines of Communication Open
Maintain open and honest communication with your child throughout their educational journey. Listen to their aspirations and concerns, and provide guidance as needed. Make them aware that you are there to support them in achieving their dreams.
College readiness for K-12 parents involves nurturing a well-rounded, confident, and independent learner. By fostering a love for learning, developing essential skills, and preparing for the college admissions process, you can help your child embark on their college journey with confidence. Remember that every student is unique, so adapt your approach to suit your child's individual needs and aspirations. With your support and guidance, they can successfully transition to college and embrace the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
DID YOU KNOW?
On the ballot, the CHISD VATRE will be listed as Proposition A.
The Cedar Hill City Council and the Cedar Hill Chamber of Commerce have voted to support the district’s VATRE.
In order for academics to improve in Cedar Hill ISD, our children must have qualified teachers in the classroom.
Without additional funding, CHISD’s ability to retain the best teachers and staff will be significantly diminished because neighboring school districts are able to offer higher wages for the same positions.
If voters approve the VATRE, CHISD will have an additional $6.8 million each year to fund teacher salaries and hire additional police officers for our elementary schools.
The Cedar Hill High School AFJROTC and the CHISD Communications Department would like to recognize and honor current staff members who served in the military. Please complete ta short form by Friday November 3, 2023. Click here to share your photo and story about your time in the service.
