Speaking of OBOB
There is less than one month left to register for Oregon Battle of the Books!
OBOB is a fun reading incentive program open to third, fourth, and fifth graders that encourages students to read a range of genres and authors in the spirit of teamwork and camaraderie. This year, we hope to maintain this strong Sato tradition in a nontraditional way that will add familiarity and socialization to our pandemic school reality.
Third grade teams are formed with teacher support. Fourth and fifth graders form their own teams. If your student needs help finding a team, please email tammy_fry@beaverton.k12.or.us. Once your students have formed their team, they must complete this registration form with adult help. The form will close December 13, 2020 at 11:59 pm. Battles will be held over Zoom on Wednesdays beginning January 7.
Nurse News: November 2020 Eat, Sleep, Move!
Healthy habits and routines are important to manage and improve both mental and physical wellness, even when students are participating in distance learning. Healthy eating, sleeping and exercise are linked with improvements in behavior, attention, mood, safety, school performance and attendance, and boosting immune systems. Here are a few tips.
Nutrition
- Try to make half the plate fruits and vegetables
- Limit sugary drinks. Did you know that in 12 ounces of soda, there are about 40 grams of sugar? That is 10 teaspoons of sugar in just one can!
- Focus on eating more fresh foods and less packaged foods.
- Occasional sweets are fine, but try not to make dessert a reward
- Let kids stop eating when they feel they’ve had enough
- Nutrition Resources:
- Free food resources are found on the Community Resources webpage.

Sleep
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, to promote optimal health:
- Children 3-5 years old should sleep 10-13 hours per 24 hours
- Children 6-12 years old should sleep 9-12 hours
- Teenagers 13-18 years old should sleep 8-10 hours
- Set bed and wake-up times at the same time every day
- Have a bedtime routine
- Remove electronics from the bedroom, keep it quiet, and at a comfortable temperature
- Avoid large meals and caffeine before bed time
- Sleep Resources:

Exercise
- The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommend children and adolescents ages 6-17 do 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily.
- Make moving together a regular part of your family life. Walk the dog, have a dance party, do fitness activities during commercials, clean the house or yard together, and take the stairs!

School Based Health Center at Merlo Station High School
The School Based Health Center (SBHC) located at Merlo Station High School is open to all students of all ages within the Beaverton School District. The clinic is open on Wednesdays for in person visits and we can accommodate virtual visits every day of the week. The SBHC is a safe place for students to get caught up on vaccinations, receive treatment for minor illnesses, speak confidentially to a medical provider, get a sports physical and more. Trouble sleeping?, Anxious? Feeling a little down? The SBHC can also connect students with someone who can help. The SBHC has a licensed medical provider and medical assistant and can submit in house referrals for behavioral health services. Most private insurance plans are accepted, as well as Oregon Health Plan (OHP). No insurance? No problem. You may be eligible for a sliding fee discount based on income. Ask the receptionist about a discount when you check in for your appointment. Call 503.941.3210 to make an appointment. Walks ins are also welcome.
How Parents Support Social and Emotional Learning at Home
Tuesday, November 24, 5:00 - 6:00 pm CST
Sunset Credit Union
Sunset Credit Union has a fun online course for SATO students! It’s a linked HERE .
It's called Banzai and it’s a great learning tool for kids to learn and earn!! Once the child completes the short course, we are able to deposit $25.00 dollars into their account.
It’s not a requirement for them to become a member first of Sunset CU before completing the course, however, for the child to receive the $25.00 dollars, they would need to be a member. Which they are able to do through our website as well.
