Walnut High Senior Named 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholar Candidate
Walnut High School senior Margaret Lee was “delighted” to receive news of her selection as a 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program candidate.
The prestigious program is only offered to the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for accomplishments in many areas: academic success, leadership, and service to school and community.
“I am proud to represent Walnut Valley USD as its sole candidate,” the 18-year-old shared.
Approximately 5,000 candidates from around the country were chosen from nearly 3.6 million students this year.
Lee is a stellar student who maintains a 4.0 unweighted GPA, serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Hoofprint newspaper, Key Club President, Speech & Debate Captain, and Mock Trial Captain.
She also has big dreams of pursuing a career as an attorney.
“Growing up, I always wanted to do something related to law especially since so few minorities are seen in the field. I think that greater representation is something our world really needs to see – especially in this day and age,” she shared.
Lee will now complete an extensive application package that takes approximately 16 hours to continue in the competition.
“It’s a little daunting, but you’re being recognized by the President – so it makes sense! Regardless, I would like to take my shot!”
Presidential Scholar Semifinalists will be announced in mid-April and Scholars in May.

Below is a recap video from the event. We plan to hold more events in the future for our future women in STEM.

It is a must that every senior apply for the FAFSA that is graduating this year. This is the way you can get free money, grants, scholarships, and/or loans. Mt. Sac is offering a free workshop that will walk you through it step by step. This is an amazing opportunity!
YOU DON'T NEED TO BE ATTENDING MT. SAC TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS WORKSHOP. Please see attached flyer and call them for any questions you may have.
Last Chance for SENIOR TRIBUTES
Only a few pages left for Senior Tributes for the 2023 Yearbook. Celebrate your graduate or senior friend group with a Senior Tribute. You will start and complete your order all online at yearbookordercenter.com (school code: 2864).
Please be advised that when ordering at yearbookordercenter.com, you cannot reserve a spot or put a down payment. You must complete your tribute, finalize it and pay it in full in order to secure your tribute before they sell out or by January 31, whichever comes first. Unfortunately, the online order center does not show how many pages are left to sell on the website. If you do not see a “purchase your ad” button or “resume your ad” button, then we are sold out. You may design your tribute, save your work and return to it later, but doing so does not save nor guarantee a spot. Pro tip: Gather the photos and prepare your message before starting your tribute so that you can complete it in less time.
Any questions? Contact Ms. Tan at stan@wvusd.org. Your graduate will cherish the memory of a senior tribute for years to come. Order yours before they sell out!

Reporting Full Day Absences and Tardies Over 30 Mins
Students will be subject to disciplinary action when a student has been absent from class without a valid excuse. All absences must be cleared within one (1) school day after the last date of absence. The preferred method for clearing absences is via parent/guardian phone calls to the attendance office.
Parents must call the attendance office the day their student is absent as early as possible or within two school days of an absence, at the latest. Messages may also be left. Please clearly state the student's first and last name, guardian name, dates or class periods absent, and reason for the absence.
A reminder email and robocall are sent to the parent on the day of the absence. If uncleared, the office will make a courtesy call the following day.
When parents do not call within the two school days, the absences are counted as truant and referred to the GLC. We will not accept late phone calls.
