BLHS hosts DECA competition for area teams
On Jan. 7, approximately 360 students from about 20 different schools competed at the DECA Area 7 Competition at Bonney Lake High School. There were more than 60 volunteer judges, 20+ advisors and about 20 chaperones!
Students in DECA work both independently and as a team to showcase their knowledge of careers in areas of marketing, finance, hospitality and management. DECA members created business ideas to present to judges, developed on-the-spot marketing strategies with their teams, and more.
Congrats to all who competed from both Bonney Lake High School DECA and Sumner High School DECA and who qualified for the state competition in March.

Whole Child: Mental wellness is critical for parents, children
Mental wellness is often overlooked, but is deemed critically essential in order for both children and adults to thrive in a school setting. SBLSD has seen a need to increase access to community-based mental health services for students in all grade levels and substance use services for students in middle and high school.
A variety of mental health, counseling and community resources are available on our website on our Wellness Resources page.
This week, the Sumner-Bonney Lake School Board adopted a resolution proclaiming January 2023 as SBLSD Whole Child Month. The Whole Child approach is an effort to transition from a focus on narrowly defined academic achievement to one that promotes the long-term development and success of all children in grades K-12.
An intentional focus on social/emotional learning can help to build and support a student’s positive mental wellness and enhance coping skills. For a calendar of daily activities, visit sumnersd.org/wholechildmonth.
Today’s activity for Whole Child Month is: “During a meal time or car ride, take turns sharing favorite things you have done in the past.”
