It's a Good Day in Pre-K
May Memo
May the 4th Be With You
A long time ago in a classroom far, far away...or not so long ago in a classroom right around the corner! For all you Star Wars fans May 4th has been dedicated to Star Wars day. A day where Star Wars fans can celebrate all things Star Wars. In one short month we will be celebrating all things Pre-K. Your little Jedi will have mastered the skills necessary to move on to kindergarten. One Jedi master, Yoda, was known for his wise words, wisdom and advice. One of his best quotes can relate to our pre-schoolers, "Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is." Wonderful indeed!
48
In Chinese numerology, 48 is a number that means "determined to prosper or simply prosperity, which is good for business." In our Hudson Pre-K classroom the number 48 is the number of years that Tracy Ebel has been employed by Questar. Congrats, Tracy and thank you for your 48 years of service. You working with our Pre-K students is good for business.
How to Talk to Your Child About Safety Drills, Lockdowns, and Gun Violence
On March 31st many school districts across the area received threats that were believed to be "swatting" incidents which are false reports of a serious law enforcement emergency. Many of our Pre-K classrooms were either put in a lockout or a lockdown. Regardless the situation, it is scary for students, teachers and parents alike. I was in one of our Pre-K sites when we were put into lockout at the same time I received a notification that my daughter's Pre-K was put into a lockdown. I immediately wanted to drive to her school, but knew she was safe. I knew because I have taken part in numerous drills. I knew her teachers knew what to do and I felt at ease knowing she was with her teacher in her classroom. Attached is an article on how to talk to your child about all of this and resources.
C is for...
Construction!
Students in Mrs. Welch's Pre-K classroom at Ichabod Crane had the opportunity to pretend they were architects and builders. Students could look at blueprints, use toy tools, and through imaginative play build their structures! We have some future engineers in the making!
Carle!
Mrs. Welch's students did an author study on Eric Carle. Students used paint, brushes, and textured paper to create their favorite Eric Carle animal with a story. These type of projects cover a wide range of Pre-K standards and skills including speaking, reading, listening, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and dexterity! Good work artists!
P is for...
Planting!
Students in Mrs. Jenkins' Pre-K classroom at Donald P. Sutherland in East Greenbush have been learning about plants. What better way to learn about plants than by actually placing seeds in soil, watering them, and waiting patiently to see if they grow! Research shows that gardening is a great activity for children which builds on physical, emotional, spatial, and mathematical skills just to name a few. So get a little dirty with your little ones and get planting!
Puzzles!
Who doesn't love a good puzzle? The students at our Montgomery C. Smith Pre-K in Hudson sure do! Here are some of our future problem solvers at work. Puzzles are important during the preschool years. They develop fine motor skills, gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving just to name a few.
