Week of 1/14/2024
Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
As you know, all Fraser Public Schools will be closed on Monday, January 15th, in observance of MLK Day. While this is one specific date chosen each year to honor his legacy and share his message, teaching our students about kindness, equality, compassion, and justice are a part of what we do each day.
This week and throughout February as we celebrate Black History Month, we will be teaching our Seahawks about African-American heroes of the past as they learn about slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, and other areas of American history. They will also learn about today's African-American heroes who are contributing to our American culture in so many positive ways.
In studying the past and discussing the present, students develop empathy and understanding to create a more unified, equal future for all Americans. MLK's message is as important today as it was 60 years ago.
If you would like some additional activities to do with your children, here is a downloadable activity book with coloring pages, mazes, and other age-appropriate activities to support students as they learn about the Civil Rights Movement, MLK, and various other heroes of that time.
We encourage all of our Fraser Families to take advantage of the day off of school to learn more about the legacy of Dr. King. The Interfaith Center for Racial Justice is hosting an event in Mt. Clemens. Additionally, Little Guide Detroit has compiled a list of activities and events available in our area.

January Town Hall
This week Salk held it's fourth town hall meeting. The town hall meetings are hosted by a grade level and run by the students of that grade. The purpose of the town hall is to recognize our character trait winners for the previous month and allow our students to share and explain what the new month's character trait means to them. January was hosted by our 6th grade students and they shared what growth mindset means to them. Growth Mindset is January's character trait and teachers will be looking for individuals that demonstrate growth mindset in their classroom. The winners will be introduced next month and be invited to a pizza lunch with the principal. The 6th grade students did an awesome job!
Behavior Refresher
With the start of the new year, the school ran a "behavior circuit" for all the students to progress through to remind them of the good behaviors we are looking for at Salk. Teachers and staff members discussed and taught students what those good behaviors are in the different scenarios we see at school such as walking through the hall, going to an assembly, or arriving and dismissing from school just to name a few. The students did a great job and really demonstrated the outstanding students we have here at Salk.
Congratulations Ms. Ludeke and Mrs. Chinn!
Congratulations to Mrs. Chinn and Ms. Ludeke. They have been awarded a Fraser Education Foundation mini-grant for Salk. Mrs. Chinn and Ms. Ludeke wrote a grant proposal to update and refresh our sensory room at Salk. We are looking forward to the new sensory room. Thank you Fraser Education Foundation and thank you Mrs. Chinn and Ms. Ludeke.
6th Grade Breakfast
The annual 6th grade breakfast took place this past Wednesday. Sixth graders are awarded a breakfast to celebrate their final year at the building as well as reminding them they are the role models of the building and what that looks like.
SECOND STEP SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING CURRICULUM K-8
As you know, in September we kicked of the Second Step Curriculum in all K-8 classes to further strengthen our social and emotional learning. Second Step offers weekly, age-appropriate virtual lessons for students to help them with a variety of social and emotional skills. These weekly lessons build on and support all of the great work we're doing at Salk to support our students. Combined with our schoolwide restorative practices and consistent PBIS expectations, we are creating a firm Tier 1 foundation for supporting all of our students' social, emotional, and behavioral development.
This week, each grade-level will begin a new unit. Please view the grade-level home links below to learn more about what your child is learning and how to support them at home during the second unit of Second Step.
Upcoming Band Concert
Our first full elementary band concert is scheduled for Thursday, January 25th at 7:00 P.M in the Fraser High School gym. Students must be in the gym with their equipment set up by 6:30 P.M. for a group warm-up before the concert. Percussion students are expected to bring their own percussion kit with them. For attire, please have your students wear their Fraser elementary band t-shirts with black or khaki bottoms and black shoes
Prior to the concert, please make sure your student has everything they need: instrument, book, stand, new reeds, etc. so that rehearsals can go smoothly. If you need help getting any of the necessary equipment, please don't hesitate to reach out--I am more than happy to help.
If you have any questions or need anything from me, please let me know. I'm looking forward to our first full performance of the year. Have a great day!
Thanks,
Peyton DeSchutter
Thank you Board of Education
Salk PTO
Next PTO meeting is January 18, 2024 at 6:00 in the Salk Media Center.
READY OR NOT- THE COLD WEATHER IS HERE!
We're starting to see MANY students bundled up each day, which is great! Please be sure to send your child to school dressed for the weather each day. Students will start needing warm coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and/or boots daily throughout the winter.
Please take time to label each and every item- because our lost and found gets bombarded with lost winter accessories throughout the season
Please note that, per Board Policy, we will be having outdoor morning lineup and heading outdoors for our 20 minute recess(es) if the windchill is 10+ degrees.
Time outdoors is time well spent for kids, in all seasons.
Attendance Rates Improving
After review, the attendance data for the first half of the school year continues to improve! We appreciate our families’ commitment to ensuring students come to school every day.
Through December 18, Fraser had 75 days of school. More than 94 percent, or 4,604 students, are on Tier 1 for attendance, which means they attended 60 or more days of school. On the opposite side of the spectrum, only a little more than one percent, or only 58 students, have attended less than 52 days of school. Attendance rates take into consideration both excused and unexcused absences.
Please continue to stress the importance of school attendance at home and make sure your students attend every day to ensure future success. We look forward to working with families to celebrate our students’ great attendance for the second half of the school year!
Canvas- Parent Access
All Fraser classroom teachers provide instruction, resources, activities, and assessments to students utilizing the Canvas LMS. As a result, students have continuous access to the course materials and information regarding their achievement.
Parents/Guardians can also have continuous access to their student’s course materials and grades in Canvas by creating a parent/observer account. In addition, parents of multiple students can easily switch between their students to view grades and assignments within the same parent account.
All sign up information and resources are provided on the Fraser website.
Important reminders when using Canvas:
- Canvas works best in Chrome
- Please do not install the Canvas app (for parents or students). We are not supporting it as our staff and students are utilizing the web-based version of Canvas and it looks and works differently.
- If you signed up and paired with your students last year, you still have access to those students and their new courses this year.
- If you need to add more students to your account this year, please follow the directions provided below.
- If you have forgotten your password, you can use the Forgot Password? link on the parent sign in page. Then, enter the email address you used to set up the account to receive a password reset email.
- If you have forgotten the email you used, please reach out to Kim Keith, Kimberly.keith@fraserk12.org, for additional assistance.

Charlie the Therapy Dog
Charlie has made several visits to Salk with great success. Students are happy to see him and he really brightens the mood. Charlie will visit on January 17, 2024.
Charlie's purpose is to ease student's anxieties and increase positive emotions. We do not want his presence to cause fear or anxiety. As a reminder, parents have the ability to opt out of having their student interact with Charlie. If you DO NOT want your student to be around Charlie, then please fill out the opt out form linked here.
For the safety of students with allergies and Charlie, he will not be in the lunch room. Charlie will also remain out of classrooms in which parents have a student who opt out. Charlie will be under my supervision and kept on a leash at all times.
