Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,
¡Feliz Año Nuevo 2024! I would like to thank Karen and Rick DeGolia and the Atherton Police Department for hosting another incredible Toy Drive. Our Community School Coordinator, Jose Luna and Administrative Assistant Claudia Sandoval were able to help identify families in need so that 157 students participated this year. Furthermore, the "Holiday Buddy" program supported fifteen families in need financially with staff and community support that raised over $4,000.
The rainy weather, although very much needed and welcome, creates some challenges for everyone during Drop Off and Pick Up time at school. Please remember to leave home a little earlier in the morning on rainy days to get your child to school on time due to expected delays on the road and anticipate a little longer wait in the Drop Off and Pick Up lines(we appreciate everyone's patience!). When it's raining, our students should report directly to our Cafeteria which opens starting at 7:45am. Recess and Lunch are also indoors during rainy days. Our PE+ program will pivot to indoor classes during rainy days where they are doing circuit training.
We know the greatest amount of learning happens for our students from now in January through the Spring Break in April. However, student attendance is key as well (as students can't learn if they are not at school)so please make sure your students are here every day on time and for the whole day (unless they are sick).
We were all shocked and saddened when we returned from Winter Break to discover they had removed the beautiful and iconic heritage oak tree at our Amphitheater. Unfortunately, it was discovered the trunk was rotting inside and the tree was deemed too dangerous and so needed to come down. As we move forward and look towards improving our school site with Measure T funding this might be an area that will be revamped.
Finally, a big SHOUT OUT to District Facilities as the students were very happy last week to see the return of the Tether Ball under the Solar Panels on the playground! The Tether Ball courts had been removed to install the Solar Panels roughly 5 years ago and were replaced last week. Thanks to Coach Steven and PE+ staff for teaching our students the rules of the game(no "Ropies!!).

Goodbye Heritage Oak Tree!

Social Emotional Learning and Acknowledge Alliance
Project Resilience is a Social Emotional Learning curriculum where our community partner Acknowledge Alliance's Resiliency Counselor works with our students on developing their social emotional skills. These skills include identifying strengths, recognizing and managing emotions, demonstrating caring for others, coping strategies for dealing with feelings, establishing and maintaining positive relationships, making responsible decisions, setting goals, and working with others. Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will all go through the 6-7 weekly Social Emotional Learning lessons with our MFT Resiliency Counselor Emily Weiner before the end of the school year.
5th Grade Outdoor Education Trip January 22- 26th
The 5th grade students will be attending Outdoor Education at YMCA Camp Jones Gulch, near La Honda, during the week of January 22, 2024. Outdoor Education is one of the most memorable experiences of a child’s school years. The students experience the life science standards taught by attending classes, taking field trips, hiking and experiencing the natural environment, and they bond with classmates. New TK/Kindergarten Registration 2024/25 and Tours
The School District Enrollment and School of Choice for 2024/25 TK/Kindergarten opened on November 2nd and continues through Friday, January 19th at 3:00pm. It is important that both the Registration/Enrollment Form for your home school(based on your address) and the School of Choice Form for Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion must be completed by January 19th. Current PreSchool students here on our campus and siblings of students who are currently enrolled here and at Kennedy in the Spanish immersion strand have priority acceptance as long as the forms are completed on time by January 19th. Please complete this Adelante Selby Sibling 2024/25 Form so we can alert the District to prioritize your acceptance for next year. IMPORTANT REMINDER: Our current TK students are automatically enrolled for our Kindergarten for next school year 2024/25 and do not need to complete a new registration or school of choice form.
Please help get the word out to family, friends, and neighbors about our weekly informational TK/Kindergarten Tours that meet in person at the school office every Thursday at 8:40AM and the tours will continue through the end of January. Please register for a TK/Kindergarten Tour with this form: TK/Kindergarten Tour Registration. Promoting our school by "word of mouth" from parents and community members is the best way to "market" our school and immersion program to prospective new parents. When promoting our school, keep in mind that mastering two or more languages has enormous benefits for our students, both native speakers of English and native speakers of the target language(Spanish) at a dual language immersion school. Other talking points when talking about our school are that research has confirmed the benefits of biliteracy and bilingualism that are demonstrated as brain and cognitive functioning, academic, economic, and social advantages, as well as cross-cultural competency and supporting a stronger family cohesion and connection to their family heritage.

Child Nutrition Services: Breakfast and Lunch Menus
A healthy body fosters a healthy and focused mind. Well-rounded meals served in RCSD school cafeterias are created using USDA nutrition guidelines as well as “kid-approved” recipes. Whole grains, milk, fresh produce, protein, and healthy fats containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are the stars of the breakfast and lunch menu items. Studies show that good eating habits and healthy behaviors are connected to academic achievement. Meals provided by Child Nutrition Services help to shape lifelong healthy habits. All students have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch for free again this year through our Child Nutrition Services.
COVID-19 POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:
Parents are to complete a self-reporting form when a student tests positive for COVID-19 (link below). Our office staff is happy to assist you in filling out the form if help is needed. Once you complete the reporting form, you will receive an automatic response with the isolation guidelines. We do ask that you continue calling the school office to report your child's absences.
Office Hours
Our school office hours are 8:00-4:00pm. All visitors to our school during school hours (not for Drop Off or Pick Up times) must come through and sign in at the school office.
