A Note From Principal May
Dear Parents, Students, and Teachers,
Recently, I had an opportunity to welcome students back for the new year, with a series of mini-assemblies. Students came down to the library during Colt Time, and we spoke about two major themes that I would like families to continue discussing.
The first thing that I spoke with the kids about was how truly successful students view school differently than other students. Truly successful students take the lead in their own learning, understanding that school is a way to practice life skills that will help them to become their best selves. Rather than coming to school and “playing the game” to get good grades, I encouraged them to focus on the self-improvement opportunities that school provides. In our world, most young people do not get the opportunity to go to school! I also asked students to work are think about what they would like to have, be, and do in their future. At home, as well as at school, we should strive to help every child develop some ideas about their future, so that school may become a vital tool toward a personalized set of goals, rather than something they “have to do.”.
Secondly, I spoke with students about the power of words. In the past few years, I have been surprised, along with some parents, at some of the words that I am educating students about. I want to be clear that I am not speaking of swear words, which have been around for many years. The words we are hearing from time to time are words that are historically rooted in hate and intolerance. Some students hear these words on youtube, or video game chat rooms, and don’t fully understand the gravity of these words. I’ve been surprised a few times this year when students tell me and their parents that they didn’t think these words were any different than “a swear”. Please consider continuing this conversation at home with your child.
Sincerely,
Chad May

MAP Testing: From the Desk of Mrs. Buchanan
Parents, please consider having a conversation at home about the importance of our tri-annual MAP Testing. MAP tests are state-aligned computerized and adaptive assessments that provide useful data and information about student achievement and growth. These assessments are unique in that they adapt to each student’s ability, more accurately measuring what a child knows and needs to learn in the areas of reading and math. In addition, MAP tests measure academic growth over time, independent of grade level or age. MAP test results provide educators with timely information that guides instructional planning and school improvement. The results assist teachers in the following areas:
Identifying the skills and concepts individual students have learned
Diagnosing instructional needs
Determining if academic interventions are warranted
Guiding the selection of academic interventions
Monitoring academic growth over time
Making data-driven decisions at the classroom, school, and district levels
Placing new students into appropriate instructional programs
MAP Testing Schedule
September 24th: Math Testing during periods 1-3 for all grade levels
September 25th: Reading Testing during periods 1-3 for all grade levels
Students will be using their iPads for this test. Please make sure they are fully charged and ready to go each day.
These assessments give us critical information that can help us help your child. Please make every effort to have your child be in attendance on testing days unless they are ill.
Barrington High School Visit
8th graders will visit Barrington High School on January 30th. During their time at the high school, students will hear from a student panel about what freshman year is like, meet in a small group with their high school counselor and also experience BHS' first ever Career Expo! The Career Expo includes businesses and vendors from the community and will encourage students to consider what Career Pathways they might want to explore during their time in high school. There will also be faculty and students present to highlight the elective courses BHS has to offer that relate to the various Career Pathways. We are excited to welcome your students to BHS!

8th Grade: Ms. Galin
Counselor's Corner
Now that 2023 has come to a close, perhaps you have had time to reflect on the past year with friends and family. Many of us choose to make resolutions or set intentions for the year ahead. Research shows that writing down realistic intentions and posting them someplace where you will see them every day (think closet door, bathroom mirror, etc.), increases the likelihood that you will achieve your goals.
At Station, we continue to work on our building goal of spreading kindness. The SEL topics we will be covering for the remainder of the school year are:
Acceptance
Kindness
Stress/Coping Strategies
Erin’s Law
Mental Health Awareness
Happy New Year from Station’s Counseling Department!
8th Grade Illinois Youth Survey
Dear Parent/Guardian,
In its strategic plan Framework 220, Barrington 220 has made a commitment to “Foster a safe, secure, and supportive environment while promoting and creating conditions for balance in support of personal wellness and mental health.” To better understand the non-academic, social/emotional needs of adolescents and teens, in 2008 the school district began administering the Illinois Youth Survey (IYS) to middle and high school students. This questionnaire provides valuable data in comparison with other Illinois and Lake County schools whose students also participate in the IYS. These results help to better understand students’ health and safety needs, and to develop appropriate programs for their benefit.
The questionnaire asks students:
• Whether they have ever used alcohol and other drugs, perception of risks, where substances may have been accessed, consequences of use, approval or disapproval of use;
• How they feel about their school experience;
• Their family and personal characteristics;
• Family communication and expectations regarding substance use;
• Self-perceptions, feelings and moods;
• Health behaviors, such as diet, exercise habits, height and weight.
The survey questions are viewable at https://iys.cprd.illinois.edu. A copy of the survey is also available for review in the school’s main office.
The Illinois Youth Survey is designed for students in grades 8, 10, and 12. Our school plans to give this survey to all 8th graders on Thursday, February 22, 2024.
Eighth-grade students will take the survey in their Colt Time Class. Typically, students can complete the survey in 40 minutes or less, and student participation in the survey is voluntary. All individual student responses to the IYS survey are entirely anonymous and confidential. Students will not put their names or any other identifying information on the survey booklet. The school cannot determine how individual students personally answer any of the questions and only receive the number of total responses for each question. If you prefer that your child not participate in this survey, please contact me at thaupt@barrington220.org to discuss alternate arrangements, or use the form below. Please also feel free to contact me by telephone if you have specific questions.
Sincerely,
Tim Haupt

Estimado Padre/Tutor,
• Si alguna vez han consumido alcohol y otras drogas, la percepción de los riesgos, donde pudieron obtener estas sustancias, las consecuencias de su uso, la aprobación o desaprobación de su uso;
• Cómo se sienten acerca de su experiencia en la escuela;
• Su familia y las características personales;
• La comunicación y las expectativas de la familia en relación al consumo de sustancias;
• Auto-percepciones, sentimientos y estados de ánimo;
Sinceramente,
Tim Haupt

Cold Weather Reminder
Dear Parents,
As cold weather makes its way to our area, I would like to share a reminder of our morning routine at Station Campus. School doors open at 8:25 AM daily. Please note that there is no supervision provided before this time, and with colder temperatures ahead, we want to encourage you to arrive no earlier than that time. As with all matters, we value your help to ensure the safety and well-being of our students.
