Social Media Issues Impacting Students - We Need Your Help
Over the last several months, the middle and high schools in the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District, as well as around the nation, have seen an increase of anonymous social media “confession” pages created using school names. These pages often contain inappropriate, harmful, and otherwise insensitive comments and pictures of students and staff. Mountain View Middle School is not associated with any of these accounts even though our school name and logo is used.
We consider any of these accounts extremely unacceptable and if we learn who the students are who create them, these students will be disciplined. However, most, if not all, of the accounts that we have come across are anonymous. This is making it difficult for us to investigate and find out who is creating them.
The best way to put a stop to this is to look at your student’s Instagram account(s). It is possible for students to have multiple accounts and switch between them to make posts. To check your student’s account, click on the “person” logo on the bottom right Instagram main screen. The accounts are listed on the top left of that screen. There is a drop-down menu to see if students have multiple accounts. You may also want to check and see if students are following these “confession” accounts. To see who or what your student is following, look at the top right side of the “person” icon page. We strongly recommend not having your student follow any of these accounts. Giving accounts like this attention is what keeps them going.
Ensuring a welcoming learning environment for each student requires that we all take an active role in fostering safe schools.
For our students this means:
Being kind to one another
Being respectful of peers and staff members
Practicing responsible digital citizenship
For our staff this means:
Being clear with expectations
Being responsive to student concerns
For our families this means:
Being aware of your student's online activity and social media presence
Helping enforce and model responsible and kind digital citizenship
If you or your student(s) become aware of any inappropriate social media posts or pages, please report them using the instructions below
As always, the District’s SafeSchools reporting system may be used to report any safety concerns.
