ATHLETICS SCOREBOARD
Lightning v. St. Thomas Academy - Section Semi-Final, Feb. 25
The Lightning boys battled to an amazing 2-1 double overtime victory against St. Thomas Academy on Friday at Braemar Arena behind an awesome defensive performance and a spectacular game by junior goalie Jay Svaren!
Both teams shook off early butterflies as the start was characterized by neutral zone play and outside shots when penetrating the offensive zone. The Lightning had a solid chance when Tanner Kronberg pushed the play to the Cadet net. Halfway through the first, a Lightning penalty brought momentum for the Cadets and what would prove to be their only goal on a high shot that may have been tipped as it seemed to flutter before making its way over Svaren’s shoulder. The Lightning had a power play late in the period and pressed their case with a good opportunity by Jordan Larkee down low and a Logan Opgrand shot that rang off the post. For the period, STA outshot Eastview 13-5.
After beginning the period in a familiar penalty killing role, the Lightning struck back with a strong period. The teams traded chances five on five and the Lightning drew a penalty about five minutes in that although unsuccessful brought a swing in momentum. The game then took decidedly physical turn in the middle of the period when offsetting minors were assessed. The Lightning worked to stay disciplined but were pushing the play on the forecheck and began to play with a chip on their shoulders. That hard work was rewarded by another power play opportunity and Nick Karam’s marker off a scramble in front at 14:30. Karam slipped down from the point and backhanded a puck that avoided a crowded goal mouth and the Cadet goalie. The goal was unassisted but the entire power play unit of Kronberg, Charlie Ortman, Cody Domagalski and Ben Keefer contributed to the “greasy” goal that got the Lightning on the board. An STA flurry near the end of the period saw a great play by Opgrand to clear a loose puck lying in the crease. Shots at the end of the second were 16-16.
The Cadets brought some momentum into the third from their surge late in the second and would dominate shots in the third period. However, Lightning goalie Svaren was a brick wall and the defense largely kept those shots on the perimeter. After a tight but penalty free 12 minutes, STA was awarded a power play near the end of the period. The Lightning penalty kill was again up to the task and the Cadets power play ended after Keefer drew a slashing penalty. The Lightning pressed the case during the abbreviated power play but regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.
During the first overtime - by rule an eight minute period without resurfacing - both teams exchanged opportunities. Larkee had a nice chance after breaking free but the puck slide through the goal mouth. Later Gabe Tritschler flew through the neutral zone taking the puck wide and getting a hard shot on net. Minutes later, Ortman found himself alone in the slot and Kronberg had a rebound opportunity but the Lightning were unable to get the puck behind the STA net-minder. The Cadets also had opportunities but this night would be Svaren’s.
From the outset of the second overtime the Lightning brought renewed purpose to the game seemingly drawing energy from the raucous Eastview student section. The Lightning drew an early penalty when John Kisch managed to get behind the Cadet defense on a nice feed from Larkee, nearly scoring despite being hooked. The Lightning pressed hard during the power play and six minutes in, Jordan Brothers sent a rocket off the right post. The Lightning forecheck circled like a band of wild hyenas and became a big problem for the Cadets. Tyler Cords had a near miss 10 minutes in when finding himself all alone. That forecheck and energy would prove to be the difference as it forced STA into a mistake just inside their zone. The Cadets failed to get the puck out and after bouncing to the high slot, Larkee was able to tip it to Brothers in what turned into a two on one. Brothers showed poise by freezing the goalie with the possibility of a pass back to Larkee before sending it over the goalies left shoulder. The Lightning win at 15:01 of the second overtime and 74 minutes of game time!
The Lightning's first playoff victory against St. Thomas Academy is one of the biggest in team history and will carry the boys into the Section Final against Cretin-Durham Hall on Thursday, March 3 at 7pm at Braemar Arena. One team one dream manifested itself through a gritty effort relying on strong team defense and outstanding goaltending. The team is grateful for all of our superfans and will need them again on Thursday!
2/22 EVHS Varsity Boys Hockey Playoffs
Eastview Varsity Hockey began the 2022 Section Playoffs with a commanding 8-0 win over the Eagan Wildcats on Tuesday night. Jay Svaren and Connor Christian combined for the shutout and the Lightning advanced to the Section Semi-Finals. 15 different Eastview skaters had either a goal or an assist in the game driving a balanced attack that wore down and overwhelmed Eagan.
In the 1st period, Eastview had 19 shots on net and scored their only goal of the period on a nice tip by Tanner Kronberg, assisted by Tyler Cords and Charlie Ortman. In the 2nd period, it did not take long for the Lightning to ramp up as Ortman scored on a pass from Nick Karam just 55 seconds into the period. Five minutes later Jordan Brothers scored with assists going to Brayden Kaldenbach and Logan Opgrand to put the Lightning up 3-0. John Kisch scored next on a snipe from the top of the circle on a great pass from Jordan Larkee and Ben Keefer. Brothers got his 2nd of the game by stealing the puck from an Eagan defender in the neutral zone and skating it in to score and extend the Lightning lead to 5-0. Just over two minutes later, Walker Bergland got a pass from Ryan Moline, made a nice play shielding a defender in the corner and skating it around the back of the net and finding Cody Domagalski out front who buried the puck for a 6-0 lead. Kronberg scored his second of the game near the end of the 2nd period on a pass from Sam Gillis. The second period ended with an impressive six goals and the Lightning up 7-0.
Running time was on for the 3rd period as Eastview continue to hold off Eagan for the shutout. Christian stopped all 10 shots he faced with a couple of really nice saves. Tyler Cords scored the Lightning’s lone goal of the period with assists going to Billy Downs and Larkee.

Placing 4th was Cole Frost, and Luke Habeck. Placing 5th was Carter Harris, Levi Ruyle, Pierce Lewis, and Tommy Schmidt.
