Message from Mrs. DeMartino
Dear Raleigh Hills Community,
School this year was definitely not how I envisioned it when I was in my teacher preparatory program way back in the day. And while children may not have learned in the traditional way we have been used to, I push back against the idea that it was a lost year. I think kids have learned a lot about resilience, contributing to the family, and reading the news. I'm sure if you had a moment to reflect about all that the children in your care have learned, you could list many other lessons. It might be tempting to say that children have lost academics and they need to spend the summer doing workbook pages and playing catch up. I am ALWAYS an advocate for reading as much as humanly possible, and I encourage you to participate in summer reading programs. And for the rest of the time, I encourage play.
In a recent article I read in the Washington Post, it said, "This summer, children need to do self-initiated activities that are rewarding for their own sake. This will create happier children now and, as research has shown, lead to improved physical, cognitive, social, emotional and creative outcomes later in life." I whole-heartedly agree. Now that it is looking safer to get outside and to be with friends, I think play dates, trips to the park and other activities away from screens are the order of the day. Maybe your student is into birds and wants to become a bird watcher. There are so many books and websites that can help you identify the birds you might see. Did you know that many zoos across the country have Zoo cams on various animals? If your child is interested in that, it might be fun to have them watch and keep a journal of their observations. What is your child interested in? Your middle schooler might organize a book club (or Tik Tok dance club, or a board game club) for their friends. Get your kids involved! I'm sure they will tell you some things that they'd love to dive into over the summer. As long as it's social and play-based, it will go a long way toward setting them up for success when we return in the fall. Those social skills will be needed just as much as the academics
Warm regards,
Jennifer
