A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Luther Burbank families,
We have recently received MCAS reports from last spring's assessment administration, and we are in the process of organizing these reports so that they can be mailed home to families. These reports will be mailed to you at the end of the week. When you receive your child's report, you will see that this year’s Parent Guardian Report presents your child's scores in a familiar format but with additional information on the front page that explains some of the key differences between the spring 2021 tests and tests given in prior years as a result of the pandemic. You will also see that this year’s reports include information about how students in our school and in the state performed on each content test, how achievement has changed over time, and how your child's scores compare to other students’ performance in progress and growth.
At the school level, this year’s MCAS information has already been critical in helping us to identify skills and concepts to inform curriculum planning as we work to interweave potential lagging skills into our core curriculum.
As we review results from last year's MCAS, we are reminded of the perseverance our students demonstrated during an incredibly challenging year. We are also reminded that MCAS data is only one measurement of achievement. As we proceed into the school year, we will continue to work on strengthening our students' skills in the core academic areas, while introducing them to new grade level concepts and content.
More information about our school’s performance can be found on the state’s School and District Profile Page.
Additionally, the Massachusetts Department of Secondary and Elementary Education (DESE) has created an MCAS resource page for parents and guardians. You may find the resources provided on this page helpful in increasing your understanding of both the new assessment and the new reporting categories. MCAS Resource Page for Parents and Guardians.
In partnership,
Laura

Extra-Curriculars in Full Swing!
Transportation and Afternoon Pick-Up: This year, ALL students participating in an extra-curricular activity must be picked up by a parent/guardian or pre-approved adult. The Mary Rowlandson buses will not be available for middle school ridership.
- Pick-up time for the majority of activities is 3:00 PM. Students will be waiting for parents/guardians by the flagpole with their advisor at 3:00.
- Any student with a sibling who will be picked up at MRE may be dismissed with their sibling in the MRE pick-up line. Advisors will dismiss LBMS students joining the MRE pick-up line at dismissal.
- Cross-Country, Chorus, Jazz Ensemble, and Intramural pick-up time has been moved to 3:20 PM. Parents picking up MRE students, should pick up MRE students first and then pick up LBMS students by the flagpole.
- Parents should pull into the parking lot and drive down the first row. Do not pull into a parking space. Students will be directed to their car by their advisor.
Thank you for your prompt arrival for pick-up and for your continued support of these opportunities for our students.
Parent Teacher Conferences Around the Corner
It may be a helpful reminder that middle school conferences are not booked with homeroom teachers. Conferences should be booked with your child’s academic teachers, related arts teachers, and, if applicable, related service providers.
Conferences will be held on the afternoon and evening of October 28th and the full day of October 29th. Conferences will be scheduled through our online appointment booking system, Pick-A-Time. A link to Pick-A-Time is provided on our Luther Burbank website. Fall conference Pick-A-Time scheduling will open on October 12 at 7:00 PM.
Cross Country Update
The Cross Country teams got back into action in mid-September with the girls securing victories over Skyview, Samoset and Lunenburg. Caroline Pinto has led the team with two course setting record times, most recently completing the 1.5 mile course in 9:21. The boy’s team is still seeking their first victory. Michael Ramos tied for first with the Skyview runner setting the new course time at 9:10 for the boys. The team travels to Overlook this week to take on their long, hilly course! Meets with St. Anna and travel to Hollis Hills for a rematch with Lunenburg are on the schedule. The season will conclude with the District meet at NRHS on Wednesday, October 27th vs. Hale and Sawyer.
