A few words from Mr. Jelks...
Dear LIS Families,
As we wrap up an exciting volleyball season, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to our dedicated coaches and teachers for their hard work and commitment. The season has been a great success, thanks to their efforts and the enthusiasm of our students.
As we transition to the next phase of engaging and empowering our students, I am thrilled to announce that they will have the opportunity to participate in the WorkSafeBC Find Your Fit tour. This event is a fun and interactive experience designed to help students explore a variety of high-opportunity occupations in British Columbia.
We will be celebrating Black History Month at LIS for the month of February. This month provides a valuable opportunity for our students to learn about key Canadian and historical figures who have made significant contributions to society.
Throughout February, our students will have the chance to discover and appreciate the achievements of prominent Black individuals through daily announcements and classroom activities. These activities are designed to foster a deeper understanding of the rich and diverse history that has shaped our country.
We believe that education plays a crucial role in promoting awareness, understanding, and appreciation for the contributions of Black Canadians. By incorporating these lessons into our daily routines, we aim to create a more inclusive and informed school community.
We encourage parents to engage with their children about the topics covered during Black History Month and to support the learning initiatives both at school and at home. If you have any questions or if there are specific ways you would like to be involved, please feel free to reach out to us.
Thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to prioritize a diverse and enriching educational experience for our students. Please stay tuned for LIS First Annual International Fest

Healthy Learning
Families with children from newborn to eight years old are invited to the Healthy Start to Learning event in Ladysmith on Thursday, February 22, 2024. NLPS’ Early Years Team works with educators, childcare providers, and community partners to provide early learning opportunities for families and young children. Through partnerships, we strengthen the connection between home and school, including supporting the transition to Kindergarten. Drop by to see the many resources and supports available for families.
PacificSport hosts XploreSportZ program in Ladysmith from February 7 until March 6, 2024 from 3-4:30pm in the Frank Jameson Community Centre. Students ages 6 to 12 years are invited.
PacificSport VI’s XploreSportZ program introduces kids to FUNdamental sport skill development through discovery and play. Qualified coaches and leaders deliver sport basics and help children celebrate physical activity – this program is meant as an introduction to sport and is a non-competitive environment.
Coaches will provide accommodations for all experience levels so participants can learn and develop skills based on their own starting point. Each of the sessions will feature a different sport; some traditional such as soccer, or unique such as Tae Kwon Do or tumbling. Final sport schedule to be determined. All equipment will be provided.
Staff Triumphs in Volleyball Showdown Against Students
On Tuesday, our volleyball court witnessed an exciting clash between staff and students. In a spirited match, both teams showcased their skills, with the staff ultimately securing a well-deserved victory.
The game wasn't just about the score; it was an opportunity for our school community to come together, fostering unity and celebrating the positive spirit that defines us. Congratulations to the staff for their impressive win and to the students for their sportsmanship.
Stay tuned for more exciting events that bring us together!
Anti-Biased Film Festival
The third installment of our Anti-Bias Film Festival, students had the opportunity to view the short film titled "Lunch Box Moment."
"Lunch Box Moment" delves into themes related to bias, diversity, and inclusion, offering a thought-provoking perspective on these crucial issues. The speaker shares their experience of growing up as an Asian American in their new community. They reflect on their "lunchbox moments," occasions when their classmates made fun of their traditional Asian lunches.
The speaker recalls feeling like an outsider and even resorting to lying about their lunch to fit in. However, as they grew older, they developed a greater appreciation for their culture's food and the love that it represents. The video ends with a message of gratitude and love towards their mother's cooking.
Many LIS students experienced and/or witnessed a "Lunch Box Moments" at school and had the opportunity to talk about it and share their experience. Please take a few minutes to review the film with your child. We believe that events like the Anti-Bias Film Festival play a vital role in fostering empathy, promoting open dialogue, and building a more inclusive environment for everyone.
Help us plan for the future – tell us about your education experience. Students in Grades 4, 7, 10 and 12, their parents and all staff in B.C. public schools are invited to participate in an annual online satisfaction survey about their school experience.
The survey is now open until May 3, 2024 and takes about 30 minutes to complete. The parent survey is available in 18 languages. Please click on the button below to complete the survey,

Attendance
We ask parents/guardians to call the school before 9:00 am at (250) 245-3351 or email Info.LI@sd68.bc.ca to notify the school of your child’s absence. Please follow up with a note to your child’s teacher when your child returns to school so the teacher can address any missed work, homework issues, etc. Also a reminder that if students need to leave early, they should be signed out in the main office.
School Closure
The following is a reminder about the NLPS school closure procedure for students.
If schools are closed due to snow, or any other weather-related problems, announcements will be made on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM, WAVE 102.3 FM, and 91.7 COAST FM) by 7 a.m., or earlier, on the day of the closure. Please do not call the radio station – tune in and listen for the announcements, which will be made on a regular basis.
In addition, the district will post the information on the district’s website, Twitter, Facebook, and mobile app. Families may also receive a message through the School Messenger notification system via phone, email, or text. Please keep in mind, however, that there may be situations where this is not always possible, for example, power outages or technical problems. The most reliable method is to listen to the local radio stations.
