Career and Technical Cetner Butler Farm and Center for Apprenticeship's welding programs collaborated to provide work-based learning opportunities for students. Together they partnered with Mission BBQ to provide assistance with a smoker box on their delivery truck.

The Career and Technical Center (CTE) Butler Farm Campus were happy to accept the Hampton Elks Lodge #366 donation of 144 pairs of safety glasses for CTE programs such as Automotive I, Automotive II, Collision Repair, and Cosmetology as seen pictured.

Tanya Rogers, Cosmetology II Instructor for the Career and Technical Education Center at Butler Farm campus, partnered with Great Clips to provide work-based training and opportunities for students outside of high school. Students were able to show support through new gear and are excited about the new Great Clips Career Day now held on Fridays.

The weekend before school began, New Horizons Career and Technical Center was invited to participate in Newport News Police Department Community Day. Lots of fun, music, free food, and free school supplies brought out the local children and their parents. There was even an opportunity to meet a future firefighter!

While students began OSHA training, some Plumbing Year II students decided to put their spare time and spare wood to good use. They built Plumbing Inscutor, Michael Whalen, a sturdy and functional throne. Pictured are the handymen and their project.

In an effort to beautify the campus, some Construction Year II students noticed that a gazebo was in need of serious repair. While they were working, they discovered a few bricks along the walkway that had names of importance engraved on them, revealing some of the history of New Horizons.

Governor's School Biology students work together to model polymerization and folding in carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids with their modeling tools.

Senior Engineering/Physics students repeat the experiment that changed the history of science, the Michelson-Morley experiment.

The Center for Autism and Newport Academy are very excited to share that they have started morning announcements, where students help deliver important information to our classes. Great job students!

The Newport Academy program has introduced a class pet! Meet Tilly! Tilly is a bearded dragon. Bearded dragons are intelligent, gentle, inquisitive, and active during the day. They can even show affection! The class is loving using Tilly to supplement their classroom learning this year.

The 2022-2023 school year for the Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training has begun for both union and non-union apprentices. Welcoming a combined seventy-five (75) first-year electrical students alone, the New Horizons hallways were packed with new learners!

Join the Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training in welcoming the new Dental Assistant, Cosmetology, and Automotive Technology classes. A special thank you to Cosmetology instructor Tanya Rogers, Dental Assistant Instructor Cynthia White, and brand new Automotive Instructor Blake Thomas. New Horizons and the students are fortunate to have these skilled professionals as instructors!

The Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training (CFAAT) enjoyed collaborating with the Career and Education Center of fixing up Mission BBQ's mobile smoker. A special thank you to CFAAT instructor Joshawa Martel for using his time to come in and complete the project with the students.

Project-based learning is an exciting part of learning at the Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training. Along with the Mission BBQ project, a second-year welding student, Josh Croteau fabricated and welded with the help of his instructors, an aluminum dog box. The dog box is used for the transportation of dogs in truck beds. The project took over forty (40) hours to complete and all welding supplies and metal were donated by the project owner.

Collaboration among all campuses and instructors is strong with the Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training (CFAAT). Both the Career and Technical Education Center (CTE) and CFAAT work together to ensure each program is operating at maximum efficiency. Joshawa Martel, welding instructor for CFAAT, and Pierette Swan, welding instructor for CTE are pictured planning together for the upcoming school year. Success for students is the focus!

The Youth Workforce Center Out-of-School Youth Program students participated in an orientation and started training in Welding, Phlebotomy, Dental Assisting, and Veterinarian Technician. They are thrilled to meet their classmates and the Center for Apprenticeship & Adult Training Instructors. We are cheering them on!

The Youth Workforce Center began its small but mighty cohort in full swing! Students are already starting their success stories!

Joined by other partners and agencies at the Community Wellness Fair, the Youth Workforce Center took a trip out to James City County to connect with young people and their families. Williamsburg, Upper Yorktown, and James City County residents met to find out the opportunities available with the Youth Workforce Center.

Registration is currently open for an in-person group education and support program for family members encouraging recovery.
