"Kindergarten Beginnings!" By: Mrs. Poulas and Ms. Mezzadri
Kindergarten has been a busy place! Students have been making friends and learning our routines. We are already growing as readers and writers! Students are working hard to learn letters, sounds, and sight words. During Writing time, students are saying words slowly to catch the beginning sound to label their work. As Readers, students are looking at the cover of a book to predict what the story will be about, taking picture walks, listening to stories many times as they become 'old favorites' and are looking for sight words in books. In Math, students are exploring numbers within ten (counting objects and number printing), sorting objects, and looking for patterns. Kindergarten students will end the month by picking a pumpkin at our pumpkin patch arranged by the Kindergarten Team.
Library/Media with Mrs. Gersten!
Our goal was to respect and recognize the influence of Hispanic Americans who have enriched our culture.
To accomplish this goal, we read the book, Abuela, written by Arthur Dorros. Rosalba and her grandmother, Abuela, go on a magical journey as they fly over the streets, sights, and people of New York City which they can see as it sparkles below. Author, Arthur Dorros sprinkles Spanish words and phrases into the story. Kiel students loved learning Spanish words that are associated with families!
At the same time, students shared special family names for their own grandmothers and grandfathers! Reading and discussing Abuela is a way to acknowledge and respect our own family traditions and other cultural traditions as well!
Art with Mrs. Santagato!
Kindergarten artists are creating pumpkins in celebration of Autumn. They're blending the colors of yellow and red to paint an orange pumpkin.
First Grade artists are creating landscape paintings of barns and farms. They're learning to draw a barn and farm using shapes, lines and colors.
Second Grade artists are learning about the Impressionist Artist Claude Monet. They are creating paintings of Autumn trees and falling leaves in the style of Impressionism.
Physical Education with Miss Baskinger!
Virtual Learning with Mrs. Reinhardt & Miss La Gratta!
Students also have a new student in their classes. His name is "Gus." Gus is the class mascot who will learn all about phonics from the students. He wrote them a letter and the children helped Gus edit the letter, to reflect proper punctuation and capital letters. The students have also planned lessons to teach Gus all about the phonics features, since "Gus" didn't learn about phonics in his old school.
An Important Message from Mrs. Hatke, Kiel School Nurse:
Thank You!
I want to start by saying THANK YOU to our Kiel Parents! Thank you for your mindful consideration and cooperation for a safe and healthy return to school. Communication is key, and we appreciate your efforts in maintaining open communication during these times. However, we still have to remain consistent in our efforts to put health and safety at the forefront in order to ensure a successful school year.

COVID-19 Daily Screening for Students:
All Kinnelon schools have implemented a COVID-19 screening tool to screen students and
staff for symptoms and possible exposure of COVID-19. Please be sure to complete this on the guardian Oncourse account prior to your child(ren) entering the school building. If there is any reason your responses flags a warning - i.e. symptoms, travel or recent exposure, please call the Health Office to provide information or receive clarification as to why this may have come up.
Daily compliance is imperative as we head into the colder months. As we spend more time indoors, many of our students will begin to show signs of colds and/or flu that can mimic COVID. By taking a cautious approach and having ill students and staff remain at home, we can protect everyone, and Kiel School will remain a safe place for children to grow and learn.
Wearing a Mask:
Masks should fit the child's face and completely cover the nose and mouth and fit snugly against the sides of their face without any gaps.
Please choose the correct size mask for your child's face for comfort and breathability.
If a student is having difficulty with their mask at school an adult will assist them in wearing it correctly.
