December Staff Feature- Christine Kiely, 4th Grade Teacher
Some of my favorite things about teaching are getting to help students grow and gain the courage to try something new. I also enjoy watching kids build communities that are unique to them each year, where they feel a sense of belonging.
What are you most excited about this year at Salish Coast?
This year at Salish, I’m most excited about getting to know the community and learning about possibilities for more place-based curricular connections.
What is a fun fact about you?
I got to be part of a modern dance troupe at the Oregon Country Fair when I was in high school, with the Chautauqua group.
Golden Plunger Award- Week of 11/28-12/2
Salish Coast Eagles are Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. One way they show this is by keeping our bathrooms clean.
Winners of the golden plunger award are announced each week so that the winning classes can have their extra earned recess on Friday. Pictured below is an action shot of Mr. Lynch presenting the world-renowned Golden Plunger to a 5th grade class.

DID YOU KNOW?
• Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
• Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
• Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
• Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
• Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important.
Please Excuse all Absences
How do I excuse an absence?
A parent or guardian can excuse an absence by emailing (scsattendance@ptschools.org) or calling the attendance office (360-379-4535) They need to identify the student first and last name, the date of the absence and the reasons for the excused absence.
