Social Worker Appreciation Week
March 6th-10th is Social Worker Appreciation Week. Please join us saying a huge thank you to our very own, Ms. Tyenna Spencer-Sturdivant. On a daily basis Ms. Spencer works to understand needs of families that may be impacting student learning. She helps connect families to resources within the community. We have only benefited from having her join the Rockledge community this year.
Daily Absences
Absences Add Up
Even if your child is absent just a few days here and there, his/her grades are likely to suffer. Studies show that missing two days a month negatively impacts a student’s academic performance.
Attendance Impacts Academics and Social Growth:
· Research shows that frequent absences in elementary school significantly affect a student’s reading skills and their overall academics. By sixth grade, attendance problems become a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
· At school, students learn to interact with others, make friends, and build relationships. These skills will help them throughout their lives.
Have a Routine
· Help your child prepare everything they will need for school the night before such as: clothes, socks, backpack, lunch.
· Early bedtime ensures a good night’s sleep and allows students to get up early enough to have a good breakfast and get to school on time.
Ask for Assistance
If you have difficulty getting your child to and from school or if your child doesn’t want to attend school for any reason, speak to your child’s teacher, school counselor, or social worker. Work together to resolve issues that are having a negative impact on your child’s attendance.

Health & Nutrition Updates
National Nutrition Month: Eat The Rainbow!
March is National Nutrition Month, and we are celebrating the nutritional benefits of eating a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables! A colorful plate (and school lunch tray!) not only looks pretty, but it tastes delicious and is super good for your health, too!
Why do people say, “Eat The Rainbow!?” This is said because fruits and veggies contain specific phytonutrients that provide distinct COLORS, flavors, and health benefits! So which colors offer which phytonutrients, and what do they do for your body?! RED fruits and vegetables have lycopene and anthocyanins which help your organs and circulatory system stay healthy. ORANGE fruits and vegetables are rich in beta carotene, a precursor to Vitamin A, and antioxidants. They help support your immune system and protect your body against cell damage. GREEN fruits and vegetables get their color from chlorophyll, which helps your body eliminate toxins. PURPLE fruits and vegetables contain anthocyanins as well as many other antioxidants that help your cholesterol and support brain health.
Learn more about the many colorful fruit and vegetable options PWCS Nutrition offers by following @PWCSNutrition on Twitter and Instagram.
