Leander ISD l October 23, 2020
Dear Leander ISD business community,
Our schools, businesses, and communities look different this year. We’re wearing masks, limiting large gatherings, and moving much of our operations online. Just like you, our goal is to stay open.
During this pandemic, we’re asking our teachers and school staff to carry an incredible load by managing in-person AND virtual classrooms so our families can choose which model best meets their needs. While families have a choice between virtual and in-person school, our teachers do not. They need to be at their campuses, serving students with the same caring hearts they bring to our community every school year. Our Leander ISD staff selflessly supports kids, and we are asking for our community to help us rally around our teachers during this challenging time.
Beginning Nov. 11 and continuing on most Wednesdays for the rest of the school year, LISD will have 17 new Two-Hour Early Release for Dedicated Teacher Planning days. On these days, we will end school two hours early to allow teachers uninterrupted prep and planning time. This will also give our cleaning crews more time to disinfect our classrooms. Despite those positives, we know this adjustment will undoubtedly be a hardship for some of our families, many of whom you employ, work alongside, or
I am writing to you today to ask for your support and explain the rationale behind the decision. Our teachers have advocated for themselves, asking for the gift of time. They are working 12-hour days to make school meaningful for each and every student. We have heard how our teachers don’t feel like they are meeting their usual high standards for success, leaving them devastated. Outside of a child’s parents or family, we know they make the biggest impact on learning. Let’s show our teachers and staff we value their talents, professionalism, and dedication with this small gesture of time.
I would like to thank in this correspondence our Leander ISD Board of Trustees for their leadership and their charge to us during this pandemic. We are blessed to be in this community with caring leaders.
As we make this change, we respectfully ask that you continue to work with your employees to meet the needs of their families. Thank you for your advocacy and partnership in continuing to make our community the caring, supportive place it is.
Respectfully,
Bruce
