First JED Foundation Initiative Survey Dec. 15
As we've discussed this school year, Millis High School is partnering with the JED Foundation and the Healthy Minds Network to conduct an online survey about student well-being, challenges they may face, and their sources of support. The survey will take place in school on December 15. We are asking students to take the Healthy Minds Study for Secondary Schools (HMS2) survey because we believe that this confidential survey can provide students a chance to speak up about their experience at our school. Without the input from students, we cannot know if our efforts to improve student wellbeing, academic success, and inclusivity are working. The answers from the survey will be used to implement programs and policies, conduct training, shape curriculum, and advocate for resources at our school.
Your students' responses will be kept confidential and secure, and will not be connected with their name, email, or any other information that identifies them. If you allow your student to participate, your student may choose to skip questions or stop participating at any time. The survey typically takes around 30-45 minutes to complete.
If you would like to OPT-OUT and NOT have your student participate in the survey, please complete the Opt-Out form by December 1, by clicking this link. You may also email hms2-coordination@umich.edu only if you DO NOT WANT your student to participate. Please include your student’s first name, last name, and email, and note that the student attends Millis High School. If your student will be taking the survey, you do not need to do anything further.

The Attendance Line email can be used to notify the office of all attendance issues.
Dismissal procedure reminder
Students should bring a note to the office in the morning to receive a pass to exit class.
- If a note does not come to school with the student, there are two options to have your student dismissed.

Please give as much notice as possible.
Teachers will not dismiss a student without a pass or notice from the office.
2. Come into the office and sign your student out*.
*Please note that we will get your student as quickly as possible, but calling them out of a class in this manner is disruptive for our teachers and other students.

Alumni Spotlight
CAMERON CHANG
Copywriter, o9 Solutions
MHS Grad :: Class of 2009Did you attend college? Yes, but I took the road less traveled. After high school I went to SpringfieldCollege and quickly realized my heart wasn’t in it—especially not for $60,000 a year. After my freshman year, I decided to drop out to find myself, as cliche as it sounds, and it was the best decision I ever made. During that time I worked for my dad as an electrician’s apprentice, did a month-long leadership course in the Australian outback, and became a certified yoga instructor. After two years, I decided to go back to college at Framingham State University with a completely different mindset. I was much more focused and graduated with a degree in Communication Arts. The following fall I moved to Madrid, Spain to be an English teacher (due to being inspired by a fellow Millis alumni who may or may not be the Girls Varsity Basketball all time leading scorer). Two years later I graduated from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid with a master’s in Advertising Communication. What is your profession? I’m a copywriter for an Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning company called o9 Solutions, which is US based but they allow me to work 100% remotely from Germany. My ultimate career aspiration is to be a speechwriter for the Whitehouse, though, so let’s see if I can call my shot in this newsletter. One thing my mentors at MHS taught me was that if my goals didn’t scare me, they weren’t big enough. What skills do you find yourself needing the most at work? Though writing is the hard skill I use most often due to the nature of my work, I find the ability to articulate oneself both verbally and in writing to be absolutely essential. If you can learn how to persuade, craft an argument, and inspire people with your ideas then you can make it anywhere. Also, while any hard skill can be learned, not all should be. You’re much better off building a career around what comes naturally to you, though finding what comes naturally can be challenging; usually because it's so obvious it never even occurred to you. The most powerful career advice I was ever given was this: “Do what feels like play to you, but feels like work to others.” Do the skills and values that you learned at MHS help you in your professional life? My teachers, mentors, and coaches (usually they’re all three at MHS) sparked a life-long love affair with learning and self-improvement. In an age where your ability to assimilate new information and learn new tasks is paramount to professional success, I can’t think of more important values to pass on to your students than those, and I’ll be forever grateful that they did.

November 18 ~ Teacher Conferences LAST CALL
Thanks to all of the parents/guardians that participated in our first round of parent/guardian teacher conferences on November 3. We will be hosting one more round of conferences on Thursday, November 18, in the evening (6-8pm). Conferences can be done virtually through Zoom, or in person, depending on parent/guardian preference.
Parents/guardians can sign up for appointment slots with their students' teachers by accessing the document below and selecting the available appointment slots on November 18. You simply select the teachers you would like to set up conferences with and scroll through their appointment calendars to choose a time that works for you. Once you select an appointment slot, you will be sent a Zoom link for your conference meeting as the default. If you would prefer to meet in person with the teacher, please send an email to that teacher (email addresses are listed on the document). If you do not send an email requesting an in-person meeting, the teacher will assume you are meeting on Zoom.
Appointment slots are 10 minutes long and it is important that parents/guardians are on time for their conferences as once the 10 minutes is up, the teacher will be moving to his/her next virtual or in-person conference.
As always, it is important that parents/guardians and teachers communicate about the academic, social and emotional well being and progress of individual students. We hope many of our parents will be able to meet with their students' teachers. Please use the link below to set up your appointments.

The help that she has given to other students is immeasurable and the results of everything she does will continue to benefit future generations of Millis students. Jaden is also Vice President of the National Honor Society and writer and editor of our school newspaper. CAMDEN MORRISON
Professional Athlete
Symetra Tour - LPGA Tour
MHS Grad :: Class of 2014
Did you attend college?
I attended Franklin Pierce University, a small Division 2 college in New Hampshire. I studied Sports and Recreation Management on the professional track. This degree has proven to be a key component to my success now as a professional golfer. Everything I learned at Franklin Pierce has made the business side of my job that much easier.
What is your profession?
I am currently a professional golfer on the Symetra Tour. The Symetra Tour is the tournament circuit right below the LPGA Tour. My job isn’t like most jobs, there is no security or steady paycheck when “chasing the tour”. More often than not I have a second job at all times. That second job ranges from being a locker room attendant shining shoes to cleaning golf carts, to working as a golf assistant and teaching lessons.
What skills do you find yourself needing the most at work?
I have found that the key to being successful in both my main profession (touring) and my second profession (working for golf clubs) is to not have an ego. This was a hard lesson to learn but the truth of the matter is that no job is beneath me. Even if I am the best golfer out there I will still shine shoes if that's what it takes to get me closer to being able to fully afford to compete on tour.
Do the skills and values that you learned at MHS help you in your professional life?
MHS has played a major part in building me into the person that I am. People such as Chuck Grant, Teri Bedard, and Dave Fallon have all played a massive role in shaping me into the mentally tough individual I am today. When you are in high school it is very difficult to see your potential. It’s even more difficult to turn that potential into reality. Those three people, and many others, helped me to better understand what it truly means to work hard, as well as what it takes to be successful. From letting me vent in the office when I needed someone to listen, to making me go for runs at 6 am before school (I hate running) when I needed to prepare for the season, to taking me to a golf simulator in the dead of winter to let me get some practice in - It may sound very simple now reading on this page but it is one of the hardest things to do, not having an ego and allowing yourself to constantly evolve. Having people believe in me and push me when I needed that push made all the difference. If you want to be successful and achieve your dreams you have to be willing to do what it takes. For some that might mean waking up early, going to the library, and studying. For others, it may mean going to the gym for one hour after school. Millis taught me that it is about executing the small things that you can control now. Every small victory you have now builds the confidence that you can achieve anything, and it’s there where those small victories turn into bigger victories over time. Millis taught me to be willing to do the small job because that helps contribute to the bigger picture, the big victories.
