October 2023
Principal's Message
Students and staff settled quickly into the new school year. In each class, students have been getting to know one another, making connections with teachers, meeting new friends, and joining athletic teams and clubs. This year, we will continue to focus on kindness, caring, leadership, and student voice. Whether helping to plan an assembly, joining Student Council, eating lunch with primary students, or becoming a Playground Buddy, we hope every student will know their voice matters and that they belong. I hope this month's newsletter provides a sense of all the wonderful things happening at Carisbrooke. Enjoy!

Traffic and Pedestrian Safety
Nothing is worth endangering a child's safety.
Please give yourself time in the morning, don't rush, take it easy, and, if you can, bike or walk your child to school, or park 5 minutes away and walk to school. These measures reduce traffic congestion and increase student safety.
Drivers, take note.
There are rules everyone MUST follow:
- SLOW DOWN to 30 km when approaching the school.
- DO NOT STOP along the yellow painted curbs.
- NEVER park or walk children in the staff parking lot ( without permission ).
- ALWAYS walk your bike or scooter when on school grounds.
- DO NOT BLOCK neighbourhood driveways ( the school has received 2 complaints)
The PAC hopes everyone will do their part and organized the crossing guard task by grade.
The division with the most fulfilled shifts throughout the year will be the recipients of a special prize for the whole class. We hope you will consider volunteering!

Code of Conduct
Each school in the NVSD has a Code of Conduct.
You will find Carisbrooke's Code of Conduct in your child's agenda.
Our Code of Conduct outlines behavioural expectations for everyone:
students, staff, parents, and caregivers.
Here are the some of the expectations you will find in our Code of Conduct.
Treat others fairly and respectfully.
Behave in a way that is not disruptive to others or to the classroom.
Respect the property of others.
Follow through on plans and goals.
Be friendly, inclusive, kind, and helpful.

Orange Shirt Day
It is impressive to see how much young students know about the history of Residential Schools in British Columbia. Our staff believes understanding is the first step towards Truth, Healing, and Reconciliation. The good work done in classrooms to tell the story of Orange Shirt Day is evident in the hallways, in workbooks, in discussions, and in the sea of orange shirts worn on this day. This year, every child K - 7 made an orange shirt quilt patch, each with an important message.
The Integrated Arts Program by Ms. Phillips
Welcome to the Arts Corner!
I have the pleasure of teaching students K - 7 the Arts Education curriculum this year in a program called Integrated Arts. What is an Integrated Arts program?
This is a program where students experience all the arts disciplines (music, dance, drama and visual arts) in a way that they can see the connections between the disciplines and focus on the big ideas in art. We ask, why do humans create art ? And, how do artists express themselves?
The focus is on the process of creating art in all the disciplines. Using the studio habits of mind, students develop skills that are transferable to all areas of learning such as ‘observing’, ‘experimenting’, ‘reflecting’, and ‘persisting’. These are the basis of the Arts Education curriculum.
In Term 1, classes will focus on ‘rhythm’. In the Music and Dance studio, students will use body percussion and instruments to explore music and dance in a variety of styles and genres. In the Art studio, rhythm is also being explored as students learn about visual elements artists use to create movement and draw attention to aspects of a composition.
In the spring, we are planning a Celebration of the Arts evening that will allow students to share the skills and processes they have learned. Stay tuned for more information as the year unfolds and look for regular features in the school newsletter showcasing student work.
Regards,
Ms. Phillips

Way to go, Ms. Philips!
Feeding Futures
We know that healthy minds and bodies begin with fresh, quality food. This year, more children and youth will have access to healthy meals and snacks at school through the Province’s new Feeding Futures funding, which invests in building and expanding local school food programs. The Initiative to promote healthy eating is supported by the Ministry of Education and Child Care.
Carisbrooke students have been delighted to help themselves to fresh fruits at school this month. They have enjoyed bananas, apples, strawberries, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, sweet peas, plums, and mandarin oranges. We encourage students to eat their snacks and lunches, but if anyone is still hungry or just wants to try something new - the fruits and veggies are there. Feeding Futures funds also help us pay for the school's Garden Program.

Hallowe'en Happenings
This year, both primary and intermediate students will participate in the Hallowe'en parade.
The parade happens on October 31 and begins at 9:15 am.
We invite parents /caregivers to come watch students parade through the gym!
We can't wait to see student costumes on Hallowe'en Day, but PLEASE:
NO masks over the face and no weapons, swords, bats, axes, or EXTREME gore!
The PAC is hosting a Hallowe'en Dance in the gym on Thursday, Oct. 26 from 5:00 - 8 pm.
Pizza and Punch tickets for the Halloween Dance is now open on Munchalunch.
Ordering closes at 11pm on Sunday Oct 22nd.
Athletics, Student Council, and Student Clubs
Cross Country / Basketball
Already this term, students have joined Cross Country and Basketball teams. Thank you to the teachers who organize, sponsor, and coach both of these teams. To find out all the practice, event, and game times check Ms. Ehling's 'What's On' email sent home every Thursday.
Student Council
There is a spirit of compassion and care in the school. Student Council meetings have begun and a Student Council Harvest Food Collection project is in the works. Primary teachers are planning Christmas Cracker donations for those in need. Students will fill homemade crackers with treasures and treats for those in need in the community - please save a few of your child's Hallowe'en treats! The annual Giving Tree Project with Mountainside Secondary is now being planned.
Intermediate Choir
The Intermediate Choir program is underway, open to students in grades 4 - 7 with Ms. Inglis.
Practices take place in the music room for Grades 4/ 5 on Wednesdays at 8:00 - 8:40 am
And for Grades 6 / 7 on Fridays at 8:00 - 8:40 am. New members are still welcome to join!
Along with Division 8, the Intermediate Choir have been invited to perform at Kay Meek Theatre in West Vancouver for Norman Foote's 'Hallowe'en Howl' on Monday, October 30 from 7:00 - 8 pm. Parents are welcome to attend. Visit http://www.normanfoote.com/ for details. Upcoming winter performances in the community are not yet confirmed but Winter repertoire begins on Friday, Nov. 3 for grades 6 /7 and Wednesday, Nov. 8 for grades 4 /5/. New members are welcome to join for the winter season!
The Yarn Club
Yarn Club is starting up again for grades 2-7 and all skill levels are welcome! Students can come Wednesdays at 12:20 p.m., (after they eat their lunch) starting October 25th, to the Thunderbird room. If your child already has their own supplies, that’s great. If your child is a beginner, or in need of supplies, there are two options: purchase their own supplies [medium-weight smooth yarn (not fluffy or bumpy) and one pair of ~size 4-6mm metal knitting needles] or we have some beginner kits available for loan. We are very excited to start this club up again! The students have been asking about it. We would also warmly welcome any parent/grandparent volunteer knitters to join us and help out. Please contact Jennifer Knibbs (jknibbs@sd44.ca) if you would consider volunteering or have any questions about the club.
Ski Club
In Term 2 we will have a ski club for Gr. 2-7 on 4 Wednesdays in after-school sessions. Look for information to sign up in next week's What’s On, as it will be first come-first served for approx 50 students and their caregivers.
We look forward to adding a Chess Club in Term 2 and a Robotics Club in Term 3.
Student-Teacher-Family Conferences
Student-Teacher-Family conferences happen on Wed. Nov. 15 and Thurs. Nov. 16. On these two days, students will be dismissed early at 1 pm. The conference is an opportunity for students to speak about their learning, choose a learning goal, and receive guidance from home and school as to how the goal or goals can be achieved. The primary objective of the conference is to bring students, teachers, and families together to reflect on and discuss:
· learning achievements and areas for further growth
· development of skills and attitudes
· progress in relation to curricular understandings
Teachers will forward scheduling information and conference planning templates shortly.
Preschool Story Time at Carisbrooke
Come enjoy a story or two in the school library every Tuesday morning. Parents and caregivers are welcome to come to the library Tuesday mornings just before 9 am with children age 0-5.
Please help us spread the word to families in the community with toddlers.
Everyone is welcome and Ms. Clark hopes to see you there!
