Breaking news...Stanley Avenue School are Winter Olympics Overall Champions for 2023
Hello, Kia ora, Chomreabsour, Mālo ni, Ni hao, Kia orāna, Talofa lava, Namaste, Hola, Hallo, Chào bạn, Bula Vinaka, Kumusta, Guten Tag, Mālō e lelei , An-nyeong-ha-se-yo, greetings to all our School Families
From the Office Manager's desk...
Mr Byers is away at Sports Camp with our Winter Olympics team (and while the cat's away the mice will play!)... so I thought I would give you an insight into a camp that has been an integral part of Stanley Ave school life over the years. Stanley Ave have been competing in what was originally the Town and Country Sports Camp for over 20 years. Our students dubbed it 'Winter Olympics', and the name just stuck. Originally the students took part in mostly team sports like rugby, netball, volleyball, hockey, swimming, athletics, soccer, basketball etc and at night, bowls, chess, draughts, table tennis etc. Over the years the camp has evolved and we now also compete in sports like triathlon, wall ball. cage soccer, golf, table tennis, darts, quiz night and spike ball to name a few.
It is truly a sports camp with a difference, where teamwork, resilience, sportsmanship and empathy come to the fore, and is a magical time for the team. A time for building relationships with their peers and for experiencing School spirit at its best.
Thursday night is Cheer night, and the Gymnasium is full of parents and whānau bursting with pride as they watch their children represent Stanley Ave.
There are trophies up for grabs for all sports, as well as the coveted Sportsmanship trophy and of course the Overall winner.
Our team compete against teams form Paeroa, Te Aroha, Hamilton, Tauranga, Kiokio and even Auckland just to name a few.
This camp holds a special place in my heart. My own children were both lucky enough to attend and to this day, say it is one of their best childhood school memories.
Our team return this afternoon, no doubt exhausted, coming down from a week of adrenaline filled competition. We are immensely proud of them all and look forward to hearing about the hard luck stories, the successes and the antics of camp life.
Keep an eye out in next weeks newsletter for videos and photos as well as a full list of results.
Have a lovely weekend
Kim Hayes

2023 Chess Results
In the last few weeks of Term 2, Mrs Meyler had chess boards lined up all over the school, as the 2023 Chess competition was unfolding. Many of our students have developed a real passion for chess and it was a daily occurence to hear yelps of success and cries of despair as they battled it out in the hallways and classrooms.
Well done to everyone, there were some amazing skills on display and a great competitive spirit shown by all of our players.
Congratulations to our winners for 2023:

Room 9 - using the 5 senses!
Once a week Room 9 are writing about a food experience using our 5 senses, look, smell, feel, sound and touch. Last week was Jelly. After using all of our senses the students came up with interesting words to describe raspberry jelly. Miss Griffin hid a lolly worm in the bottom too!
A memorable experience for everyone!
