Wiggin Street Parent Update
January 21, 2022
Better Together
This is the time of the year, when teachers and students reflect on the growth made over the first semester and set goals for the next 9 weeks. It's important for students to develop a growth mindset, so they can better understand that they can do hard things! We all reach a time when we are challenged and it's our mindset that makes all the difference in achievement.
I wanted to include some resources this week for both parents and children to aide in the growth of all students. You are your child's first teacher, and we know that when parents are engaged in their children's school lives, students have the support they need to develop a lifelong love of learning. Thank you for all you do!
Best wishes,
Christy Grandstaff

Encouraging Your Child to Have a Growth Mindset
Encourage your child to NOT say this:
- I just can't do this.
- It's good enough.
- I am not good at this.
- I made a mistake.
- I give up.
- This is too hard.
- I am awesome at this.
- This is too hard.
Growth Mindset-
Encourage your child to say this instead:
- Is this really my best work?
- What am I missing?
- Mistakes help my brain grow.
- I am going to take a deep breath and work hard.
- This may take some time and effort.
- I can make this more challenging.
- I'll use a different strategy.
Sledding at Wiggin Street
1. We only sled when there is at least a 4'' cushion of snow;
2. We only sled in a sitting position;
3. Students who want to sled must bring their own plastic trash bag, and no actual sleds are permitted.
4. Sliding down the hill is one at a time and occurs only between the retaining wall and the swings on the south side of the playground;
5. After sliding down the hill, students are to return to the top of the hill at a point outside of the sledding land;
6. Sledding occurs only under the direct supervision of a duty teacher
7. Students who wish to sled must be dressed appropriately with winter coats, boots, hats, and gloves. It is advisable that snow pants be worn or a change of pants and socks be sent in the child's book bag if they wish to sled.

Thrive Kids
Thrive Kids with Coach Hannah
Words.have.power.
This week at Thrive Kids we discussed the importance of using words that build others up instead of words that tear people down. As leaders we can use our words as a power for good and as a way to help those in need which is exactly what we challenged the students to do! Build up your friend who is struggling in math, use your words to encourage someone who is sad, or stand up for someone who is being bullied. Our words have power and we want to use them as a force for change.
We also worked on the squat movement as our physical challenge for the day! Ask your kids to show you the 1, 2, 3 of the squat and see if they remember!
