6th Grade MUSIC Information
Your music teachers want to remind you about some informational meetings coming up next week. If your child is interested in band and/or orchestra, please do your best to attend these important gatherings.
- Tuesday, September 5 at 7:30 p.m.: Band Information Meeting — in the GLHS Auditorium. The band includes instruments in the wind, brass, and percussion families. Instruments include flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, french horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, and bells.
- Students interested in these instruments will schedule a fitting in the coming weeks. While there are many instruments in the band, please know there are some limits to the number of students who can play each one.
- Thursday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m.: Orchestra Information Meeting — in the GLHS Auditorium. The orchestra includes the instruments in the string family (violin, viola, cello, and bass). Students interested in one of these instruments can be measured at school or at the meeting.
- Did you know string instruments come in fractional sizes? That means any student can play any stringed instrument, regardless of body size.
- Frequently asked questions:
- "What happens if my child has never sung or played an instrument before now?" Not a problem! We will take your child from complete beginner to presenting their first concert in just a few months. You'll be amazed at how much they'll learn and grow!
- "My child loves to sing! Is there a meeting for Choir?" No. Students will hear more about Choir and SMASH Music (our non-performance course) in the coming weeks with Mrs. Harding. Music Survey frontloads band and orchestra introductions since those classes require obtaining an instrument.
- "When does my child have to decide?": Music Survey allows students to see, hear, and experience the entry point for our outstanding 6-12 GJPS music programs. They should start forming some ideas about what they might be interested in.
- "What about a Scheduling Form?": A scheduling form will be coming home where they will select one of the following options: Band, Choir, Orchestra, SMASH Music — OR — Band + Choir, and Orchestra + Choir.
- "But, what about _______?": Shoot one of us an email. We'd love to answer your questions or send you in the right direction.
