Message from the Superintendent
Last Saturday, LOSD hosted the first Multi-City Equity Summit at Lake Oswego High School. It was heartening to see many community members from across neighboring cities come together to learn and grow in the realm of equity. Civic leaders, law enforcement, fire fighters, elected officials, educators and district leaders spent the day engaged in learning about bias awareness, inclusivity, self-reflection, racism, intersectionality and more.
As I reflect on not only this day, but also on the path ahead, I know that we have exciting work to do as we continue to cultivate environments that are welcoming and honoring of all members of our communities. Afterall, equity, at its core, is rooted in relationships. Inclusion is rooted in a willingness to hear and accept multiple perspectives, and to develop relationships with people who are different than us. All of our lives can be enhanced by engaging in authentic experiences of learning about each others experiences, culture, abilities, race, ethnicity, and identity. When we build communities in which everyone feels they belong, we all win.
Superintendent Listening Sessions Next Week
We want to hear from you! Superintendent Dr. Lora de la Cruz will be holding parent listening sessions to get to know you and to hear your perspective on any topic you'd like to share. Four sessions will be held across the district with each night dedicated to specific schools. If you are unable to attend your school's listening session, you are welcome to attend a session that is more convenient.

Community Engagement Meeting About Pool
Please join us and share your opinion and insights as Lake Oswego School District and the CIty of Lake Oswego develop a final concept and design for a new community pool that will be a shared asset for the two entities to be enjoyed by the residents of Lake Oswego.

This first community engagement opportunity will provide LO residents with:
- Background on work that has been done, to date.
- Review of program components under consideration.
- Review the four sites that are under consideration.
- An opportunity to get your feedback to the design team so they can get back to Council and School Board on a final recommendation on location and program components.

Celebrating Red Ribbon Week Oct. 28 - Nov. 1
Red Ribbon Week is a national initiative to increase drug awareness and prevention among school children. By participating in Red Ribbon Week, students are encouraged to speak out in support of healthy choices.
This year’s theme -- Send a Message, Stay Drug Free -- is a reminder that by staying drug free, you are sending a message to yourself and others about how much you value yourself, your overall health, your community and your future.
Each school is celebrating Red Ribbon Week in unique ways. Look to your principal's newsletter for specifics at your student's school.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
Gifted and Dyslexic?
Some kids with learning and attention issues have exceptional skills in certain academic areas. These kids are often called “twice-exceptional” learners. (You may sometimes see this abbreviated as “2E.”)
Some organizations estimate that there are hundreds of thousands of twice-exceptional learners in U.S. schools. But there are no hard numbers because so many of these students are never formally identified as being gifted, having a disability, or both. Your child may experience dyslexia and be talented and gifted (TAG).
In LOSD, both Student Services and TAG Services are responsible for meeting the needs of twice-exceptional students and should work in cooperation. The student’s abilities will determine appropriate instruction.
If you have questions or concerns regarding our child’s learning, please call the school principal, TAG coordinator, and/or literacy specialist. You can also contact your school’s representatives for TAG-AC (TAG Advisory Committee) or SSPAC (Student Services Parent Advisory Committee).

Lake Oswego High School Musical
Come and enjoy the talented Lake Oswego High School drama cast and crew presenting the highly entertaining, Tony Award winning musical Chicago. LOHS will be performing the High School Edition of Chicago to ensure the production is more family friendly for all audiences.

Parents who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal, and to maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources.
SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools.
(Students should also be aware that intentionally providing a false report is a serious offense.)
