Staff Spotlight - Bethany Peters
This week’s staff spotlight is our amazing enrichment teacher, Bethany Peters! She graduated from UAF with a B.A. in Foreign Language & Literature. During her time at UAF, she studied abroad in both Venezuela and Spain. She loved traveling, making friends from all over the world, and learning about language & culture. Learning about art & architecture in Spain, and then seeing it in person, was amazing! Sleeping in a hammock and hiking to Angel Falls in Venezuela are experiences she hopes to never forget. She earned a Master of Arts in Teaching in 2010 from UAA. Bethany then substitute taught for a few years before moving to Utqiagvik, AK with her daughter to teach in 2014. She again was able to learn about the cultures and customs in a new place as well as meet some amazing educators whose advice and guidance has stuck with her throughout her career. In 2017, she moved back to Eagle River to live close to family. She feels incredibly fortunate to have landed a job at FPCS in 2018. She loves teaching in the enrichment program and believes that she has one of the best teaching positions a teacher could ask for! She loves the flexibility that she has to teach both what is exciting & fun for her and what our students want or need. She is incredibly grateful for the support, guidance and friendships she has gained from school leadership, fellow teachers, staff, and parents. One thing she loves when teaching is seeing a spark of joy and awe from students who are learning something new.
In the summertime, Bethany loves to take her dog, Ruby, for long walks in the sunshine, camping, four-wheeling with family, and doing small projects in the yard or house. In the winter, she tends to stay inside where it’s warm, watching her favorite shows while cuddled up on the couch, playing games, and spending time with family. She hopes to get back into sewing one day, do home improvement projects, and travel more in the future. A fun fact about Bethany is that she hauls all the water for her house and often has one or more furry companions who go along to “supervise”.
Student Spotlight: The Johnston Boys
Ben is a junior who homeschooled 1st grade through 10th. He made the shift this year from homeschooling to attending Alaska Middle College. His parents have enjoyed watching him blossom and transition with the new experiences and opportunities. He has become an advocate for himself and is taking pride in his educational successes. Ben is looking forward to pursuing a career in physical therapy or as an athletic trainer. He enjoys weightlifting, playing football for Eagle River High School, driving, and hanging out with his girlfriend and his friends.
Josh is a sophomore and has homeschooled since Kindergarten. He is currently taking advantage of the ability to participate part time at Eagle River High School. This is the first year that Josh has taken traditional public school classes, and he appreciates the ability to experience many different methods of education, and the extra time with his buddies is a big plus. Josh also enjoys weightlifting and playing football for Eagle River High School. His interests also include cooking nutritious meals and paying attention to his overall health.
Blain is in eighth grade, and has homeschooled since Kindergarten. Blain's days include a blend of classes with his mother and online courses. He is an active participant in the Civil Air Patrol and his church youth group. Blain enjoys weightlifting and spending time at the gym, playing football, snow machining, hunting, and spending time with his friends.
The family spends a lot of time enjoying the outdoors of Alaska. As homeschoolers, they have had the flexibility to go on numerous hunts with their father who works both as an engineer and a hunting guide. The Johnston boys shine as hard workers who are intelligent and caring to others.
The family originally homeschooled through a different program within the state and have really appreciated the switch they made several years ago to Family Partnership. It has been seamless for them to participate in ASD activities and classes. The support they have received through Family Partnership has enhanced and accelerated their education.
