East Central
eNewsletter August 2022
Notes from the Principal
This spring and summer we have experienced as much normalcy regarding school and activities as we have for two years. I am so very proud and appreciative of our students, staff, and community for all of your efforts to persevere, to succeed, and to consistently make East Central High School the finest school in southeast Indiana. Our 4th quarter Honor Roll numbers were outstanding with 56% of our student body earning all As and Bs and 34% earning all As! In only the last two months, our FFA and FCCLA students have had some great successes/experiences as well thanks to Mr. Johnson, Mr. Snider, Ms. Osman, Ms. McConnell, and Ms. Bonilla. Hannah Laymon specifically took first in the nation in her respective FCCLA competition! From two Mental Attitude winners at the track and field state finals, Hope Fox and Leo Maxwell, to all the time and effort this summer from camps, to conditioning, to competitions, our athletes have had a great last few months as well. Lastly, our band and choral students have been quite active from camps to the summer musical. It's been a great summer, and we expect continued success on many fronts during the 22-23 school year. Starting off strong, 293 of 333 freshmen attended freshmen orientation August 1st...the highest level of participation ever! The building project continues to move along as renovated business/FACS classrooms are complete; the pool and athletic parking lot are very close to completion as well. EC is a school...family in which we can all take great pride. As I enter year five with you and your children, my mission continues to be guided by the same principles I came here with…to make connections, to provide the best opportunities for our students, and perhaps most importantly, to offer a safe and secure school environment where your child/student can grow and thrive as an academic and as a person.
It is essential as we continue the great work East Central has become known for that we keep our focus on consistent and clear communication between students, staff, and community regarding mission, vision, successes, hopes, and desires. We must also continue our attention to best-practices and alignment across content areas to ensure continued academic success and even moreso, student growth and improvement. Please know how thankful I am to be here with your student(s), this staff, and this community. I take great pride in what we have done and what we will continue to do in our pursuit of excellence.

Dual Credit vs Dual Enrollment
Ivy Tech dual credit is college credit that students earn from credentialed high school teachers at ECHS at no cost to our families. Students do not need to leave ECHS in order to earn dual credit. Alternatively, dual enrollment is college credit that students earn from Ivy Tech faculty at the Ivy Tech Campus. ECHS has a flexible accommodating schedule for students who are eager to get on the Ivy Tech campus to earn additional college credits. Our Ivy Tech College Connection Coach, Mrs. Wendy Karle has office hours at ECHS each week. Students are encouraged to utilize her services or speak to their Guidance Counselor.
Welcome Back!

Notes from Guidance
The start of the school year has been a whirlwind of activity for the Guidance Department. We have been working diligently with each grade level and new enrollments to ensure that students are set up for a successful academic year. The ECHS Guidance Department is staffed by three counselors who cover students assigned by the following alphabet:
Mr. Brad Wynn: A-G
Mrs. Lisa Tupper: H-O
Mrs. Murdock: P-Z
Key items per grade:
Seniors: There will be a Senior Parent Meeting on August 24th from 6:30-8pm in the Performing Arts Center. During the meeting, we will review the options available to students after high school graduation along with other guidance. Counselors presented the same outlined material to senior English classes.
Seniors were also asked to create their Parchment.com accounts, which enables them to electronically send their transcripts to colleges. Many representatives from colleges will be reaching out for meetings during school with seniors throughout the semester.
SAT will be available to seniors that would like additional test scores on Oct. 1st (Saturday). To register for this test date or additional dates please sign up on collegeboard.org.
Juniors: The PSAT (10/25) and ASVAB (9/21) tests will be available to the Juniors during the school day. The PSAT is a practice test for the SAT and qualifier for the National Merit Scholarship. The ASVAB test option is a qualifier for students who need to meet the Graduation Pathway option for graduation. Counselors will discuss these options with the Juniors.
Juniors should take the SAT and/or ACT this year for admittance into the classic four-year college. Many colleges have decided to go Test Optional due to Covid, but it is still recommended that Juniors test in case testing optional requirements change. Securing a good test score by the end of the junior year will allow the college application process to start smoothly at the beginning of senior year. Upon completion of the PSAT as sophomores, all students reviewed how to prepare for the SAT/ACT using Khan Academy. Up to date registration information for the SAT and ACT is available at the following sites:
SAT: College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools
ACT: https://www.act.org/
Sophomore and Freshman: These students should focus on their grades to build a strong transcript which will enable the most opportunities for them.
Sophomores will take the PSAT on October 25th. The PSAT is a practice test for the SAT which is used for college admission. The SAT will be available to all Juniors in March of their Junior year.
We are available to meet with students individually to support academic and emotional needs. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. Thanks!

On Saturday May 21, four members of the East Central FFA Chapter competed in the Indiana 4-H/FFA Wildlife Habitat Career Development Event on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Members completed a wildlife challenge practicum where they identified 25 wildlife specimens and completed a general wildlife knowledge exam, evaluated wildlife habitats and suggested improvement practices, and they worked together to complete a wildlife management plan from a given scenario. The team of Bradley Kolb, James Bulach, Braden McDaniel and Evan Kuhn placed 6th overall. Bradley Kolb was 5th overall for the entire event while James Bulach placed 8th, and Braden McDaniel 9th.
East Central FFA Awarded Yearlong Living to Serve Grant
National FFA awarded more than $260,000 to FFA chapters in 33 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands thanks to its Yearlong Living to Serve Grants. The nationwide program provides money to local FFA chapters to support yearlong service-learning projects that address needs related to community safety; environmental responsibility; hunger, health and nutrition; and community engagement. Tractor Supply Company and Cargill sponsor the grants. Members of the East Central FFA will utilize the $3000 grant to continue the EC Re-Leaf program on the campus of East Central High School. They will be removing non-native landscape vegetation and replacing it with native trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials. Plantings will help wildlife and native pollinators as well as beautifying the school campus. The EC Re-Leaf program was established in 2017.
Business
Welcome to a new year with the East Central Business Department. We are excited that all 3 members of the Business faculty have returned to pour themselves into your children. The dynamic team of Mrs. Krista Hutzel, Mr. Mike, and Ms. Saranda Posey is already in the works preparing a goal oriented, success driven year for your students. At the end of last school year the EC Business Department was able to award $13,000 in scholarships to the Senior Class. This is due in part to the partnership of the EC Trojan Exchange school store and school and community members such as yourself. Let’s keep this momentum going into this year.
Currently the Trojan Exchange is hosting a “Back to School Sale”. You can find out more about the sale and wonderful spirit items to purchase by visiting the Trojan Exchange Spirit Gear site here: https://www.trojanexchange.com/shop.
ENGINEERING and TECHNOLOGY
My name is Anthony Moorman, and I am a new engineering teacher here at East Central High School. I come to EC with 10 years of teaching experience at Jac-Cen-Del High School where I taught math and engineering. I am a graduate of East Central High School, and am excited to be back home to continue building excitement for the engineering program. This school year, I am teaching an 8th grade course called Engineering Essentials, and three high school courses, Introduction to Engineering and Design, Civil Engineering and Architecture, and Computer Design (CAD). This year has gotten off to a great start so far and I hope to continue that. In most of my classes throughout the first couple of weeks we are just going through a lot of the basics such as engineering notebooks, measurements, and different types of sketching including Concept, Isometric, and Multiview drawings. My goal is to get as many students excited and interested in engineering as possible, so as we go throughout the school year I will include many hands-on activities and projects.
English
The first day of school continues to be one of my favorite days of the year. There is just something magical about the clean slate of a new school year.
This summer was a time for both teachers and students to rejuvenate and prepare for an exciting school year. The English teachers decided it would be fun to share how each of us spent our June and July as well as what we are looking forward to this upcoming school year.
Mrs. Stanley
(English 9, English 11, & Yearbook)
I was very busy this summer vacationing and hanging out with my family. I went to Cabo San Lucas in June with my husband, I went to Michigan in July, and we also visited Lake Pataoka at the end of July. In between vacations, I was tending my chickens and my duck, taking care of our giant garden we planted, and running my kids around to their sporting events. I am excited for my 10th year of teaching, meeting my new freshmen and juniors, and working with all of the new programs that we adopted this year.
Mrs. Tucker
(Honors English 9 & English 9)
I spent the first two weeks of summer in Cluj, Romania with my husband, Jeff, and the third week in Gulf Shores. Alabama with my son and his family. After that, I knitted three Christmas stockings. read a lot, and relaxed. This year I am looking forward to using Membean with my students. I've even seen a few working on Membean after they have finished their work!
Mrs. Cecil
(English 9 & SpEd)
I spent this summer with my family. We spent a few weeks at the beach, went blueberry picking, went to a fossil park, and did lots of other fun activities. We really enjoyed being outdoors and spending time with friends and family. I also read several great books. I am excited to get to know my students this year and watch them grow!
Mr. Meiners
(English 10 & Film Lit)
Between football practice and preparing for the upcoming school year, most of my summer was spent at school. However, my family and I were able to spend time camping, fishing, grilling out, and hiking on the weekends. We try to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. I am looking forward to building new relationships with a new group of students this school year!
Mrs. Pieczonka
(English 12)
This summer we got a new labradoodle named Leroy! We also went to Gatlinburg for a few days! We watched Carson play basketball and traveled to many tournaments! I am looking forward to going to high school football and basketball games and watching my seniors grow and succeed throughout the year.
Mrs. Trossman
(Adv. Speech, Adv. English 111, & Honors English 10)
This summer, I was a taxi service for my five kids, driving them all over the tri-state area. My family visited Disney World, which we wanted to accomplish before our oldest child graduated from high school, and we celebrated my husband’s parents’ 50th wedding anniversary at St. Augustine Beach. I am very excited to be back with my students for a new ECHS academic year. Go Trojans!
Mrs. Goodpaster
(English 10 & English 12)
Over the summer, I spent a lot of time crocheting. I made three baskets, several roses, and some wiggly worms. I also spent time with my puppy and family. I'm looking forward to working with students and parents this year and building on student's previous learning. I also look forward to working with seniors again! It’s so exciting seeing these students preparing for adulthood!
Dr. Rose-Ronnebaum
(English 11 & Honors English 11)
This summer I traveled, read, and sat by my pool. Most importantly, I spent time with my Goldendoodle, Leo. My husband, Ray, and I visited Atlantis in the Bahamas, checked on our condo on Anna Maria Island, and attended a wedding of a relative (and EC grad) in Winston Salem, North Carolina. This year I am looking forward to teaching American Literature to our juniors exploring hopes for their American Dreams through characters in our stories. In addition, I look forward to leading EC Student Council (StuCo) and the EC Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).
Mrs. Jackson
(Adv. English 111 & Honors English 10)
It was a summer of fun for Ms. Jackson and her family! It started with a trip to explore the upper peninsula of Michigan including the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Next up was an impromptu trip to Washington DC to watch the July 4th fireworks from the National Mall, followed by many days at the pool and Kings Island. One of my favorite highlights of the summer was watching the amazing performance of The Little Mermaid by the East Central Drama Club in June! This year, I look forward to getting to know a new group of students and learning more about EC procedures and culture.
Mrs. Ketcham
(AP Lit & Honors English 12)
This summer was filled with a lot of momentous occasions. My oldest son, Alex, graduated from Rose-Hulman with a degree in software engineering, and we moved him to Chicago for his new job at Wolverine Trading. My baby brother got married in the beginning of June at Keeneland and began his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Louisville. We took the boys on a quick vacation to the Bahamas before we moved Jackson up to Ball State to begin his junior year in nursing school. Somewhere in all this, I made sure to really live in the moment. Life moves by too quickly. I am looking forward to this school year as a new group of students become a part of my EC family.
Ms. Huber
(English 9 & SpEd)
This summer I traveled, read, spent time with my cat, and chilled on my family’s pontoon boat. I love spending time on the Brookville Lake with my family, except when it comes to fishing…I am not a fan! I also traveled to Nashville, TN to visit a friend from college. This year, I am looking forward to teaching English 9 and getting to know a new group of students. We are…EC!

East Central FCCLA members joined more than 7,000 FCCLA student leaders, members, and advisers at the San Diego Convention Center, June 29-July 3rd to participate in the annual FCCLA National Leadership Conference (NLC).
The conference provided East Central students opportunities for listening to inspiring speakers, attending learning sessions, competing on the national level, and networking with other leaders. The theme of this year’s conference was “Make It Count,” which inspired attendees to share how they made it count while exploring career opportunities, developing leadership skills, and growing personally while making a difference in their families and communities.
“We were thrilled to have an attendance of over 7,000 members, advisers, partners, and guests who were committed to discovering the unlimited possibilities available through FCCLA. Melissa Gulasy - mgulasy@sunmandearborn.k12.in.us
The art department is truly excited to welcome back all of our students! We have been busy planning and creating new learning experiences to educate and empower our students.
In Mr. Shun’s Photoshop Class, the students have been learning how to use some of the frequently-used tools such as the selection tools, coloring tools and type tools. In each of these tools, there are many different functions that make the software very fun but very complicated to use at the same time. The students will start learning how to restore photos next. They will also start using a tablet with a stylus pen very soon. I’m looking forward to seeing how much they gain knowledge and skills by the end of the school year.
In Ms. Mueller’s sculpture class, students have been challenging themselves by creating origami folds and techniques. One example that they recently completed was a tree.
Mrs. Gulasy’s Digital Photography class is a yearlong introduction to the digital camera as an art-making tool designed for students at the beginning level. Students are given opportunities to extend their knowledge and skills in the field of photography using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. This week, students have been busy creating their own blog sites as a place to exhibit their photography and portfolios. The blog will be updated monthly and students will continue commenting on each other's work throughout the year. As they look over their previous posts, they will see their ideas and thoughts grow and develop.
Foreign Language
mslyon@sunmandearnborn.k12.in.us
As we begin the new year, I’m always impressed with how much Spanish my students have retained from over the summer, despite them saying otherwise. To help me get to know my students, I had them create slideshows and present them to the class. They shared these in Spanish and had many personal touches and pictures throughout their presentations. The presentations went very well and gave me hope for the amazing potential of this upcoming school year.
Math
The math department started day 1 making connections and getting to know the students. Mrs. Bovard’s Algebra 2 classes worked together to build towers. Their goal was to use the least amount of material, building the tallest tower holding a ping pong ball on top using spaghetti and marshmallows. The students worked together to make a design, decide how much material to use, then start building. Mrs. Donohue’s Math 10 classes made origami cups. Their goal was to follow directions correctly and have their paper cup hold water. Mrs. Bovard’s Calculus classes made derby cars out of cardstock, straws and lifesavers. The students tested the cars and raced each other using a fan.
Music
Drama News
The drama department presented the musical Little Mermaid Jr. on June 24th, 25th and 26th. We had over 100 students ranging in age from 4-18 involved in the production. The students did an amazing job and had a great time.
We are currently auditioning for the play
Performance dates will be Friday. Nov 4th at 7:00p, Saturday, Nov. 5th at 7:00p and Sunday, Nov. 6th at 3:00p
Choir news
The Choir Department is excited for this upcoming year. Students are working hard toward the fall concert which will be presented on Sunday, October 2nd at 3:00p.
PE/Health
The Physical Education/Health Department is super excited to welcome back all of our students! We are geared up and ready to embrace a year full of fun, hard work, and growth.
We would like to welcome our newest member to the department, Ashley Andres. Ashley is a graduate of East Central. She taught mathematics at Batesville and Franklin County before taking a leave to be a stay-at-home mom. She has been EC’s Track Coach for the past 7 years.
In her spare time, Ashley enjoys spending quality time with her family. Mrs. Andres says, “I love this job. The students are doing a great job spreading love and kindness.” Welcome, Ashley. Keep up the great work!
Mrs. Andres’ classes are starting the year with the track and field unit. Some students met former NFL player, Rocky Boiman, who just happened to be in the neighborhood. He took the time to give a short inspirational speech that has students even more excited about becoming their “best self”. He even worked out with them. What a great opportunity for those students! Thanks, Rocky!
Mr. Walter’s Health classes are kicking off the year studying the basics of health. They will be covering a variety of topics throughout the year, while enjoying several guest speakers. Students will also reap the benefits of learning CPR from our Athletic Trainer, Sammy Hendricks.
Mr. Sipe’s Strength and Conditioning classes are already hard at it. His classes are packed full of motivated, hard-working students. They will be spending four days a week in the weight room and one day working on speed and agility.
Mrs. Beck’s classes are tackling the softball unit. The students are showing off their batting and fielding skills as they continue to learn the game. The respect and camaraderie the students share is second to none.
Mrs. Hendrick’s Intro to Athletic Training classes are currently designing their own training rooms. Outside the classroom they are enjoying the beautiful weather and learning what it takes to prep for football games. Optimum hydration is a must.
Science

Mrs. Hoffman
Students in Chemistry I this month are taking a closer look at the atom through the periodic table of elements, simulations of historical experiments, models and theories once thought to be correct but disproven in the lab by analysis of lab results. They will also dive deeper into the periodic table by analyzing data on properties and trends of the elements.
Mr. Tim Maluvac
Students in Anatomy and Physiology are discussing the arrangement of body systems and identifying membranes of the body the protect and lubricate the organs of the body.
Students in Biology II are reviewing the basic concepts of chemistry to further understand covalent versus ionic bonding and how hydrogen bonds fit into the picture.
Students in Biology I are working on an investigative lab by observing pond water and searching for microscopic living organisms. This will be used to connect to how students can determine if something is alive.
Social Studies
Steve Lewis - slewis@sunmandearborn.k12.in.us
In the Social Studies Department, we are off to a rocky but good start. We had book adoption this year for our department in which we have newer books, ebooks, and resources. We have also been sifting through the new resources to create great lesson plans which is a process.
We have a new teacher this year! Mr. Tyler Theising comes to us from South Ripley High School and is a former East Central High School graduate. He will be teaching US Government and US History. We are excited for him to join our staff!
