Newsletter
Rāmere Friday 5th Poutū-te-rangi March (T1: Wk 5 of 11)
Our Tumuaki Principal
Kiaora.
We have made it into the first week of autumn. The children are enjoying still being able to get outside and play.
Some things from my desk include...
- Pandemic Alert Level Two: Thank you very much for your cooperation as we move up and down pandemic alert levels. Things change very quickly which makes planning for school events tricky. We are having to be flexible and adaptable. We appreciate your understanding in regards to this.
- Concrete Upgrades: We have an ongoing project, that will span several more years, of upgrading the concrete paths around the school. We did another portion of this project this week around the junior block. It's looking smart.
- Technology Backbone Upgrade: Last Friday we saw all the WIFI units within our school get upgraded, along with switches within our data cabinet. This future proofs the school ensuring that the children and staff have quality and protected (through Network for Learning) internet accessibility. Our next step is to install UPSs (Uninterrupted Power Supply) battery units to support us when we have power cuts.
- Digital Newsletter: This is the second week with our digital newsletter. We hope that you really enjoy the new and refreshed look and that it reads so much easier on your device. It is still emailed to everyone, put on our app, linked up to our Facebook page and linked to our website to enable multiple points of access. Last week we had over 330 connections so we are thrilled with the uptake.
- Te Hurihanganui: We are embarking on exploring our systems so that they are fit for purpose for all our students. Te Hurihanganui is the means by which we will examine ourselves to determine how we can grow and develop with our cultural inclusion, equity and quality outcomes, with a special emphasis upon the Treaty of Waitangi and our commitment to this. If you would like to be involved as a whanau member please email me at principal@edendaleps.school.nz
Ka kite and have a great weekend.

Enrolment Zone - Term Two First Half Applications Open
Enrolment at Edendale Primary School is governed by an enrolment scheme.
The Board has 20 places available for out of zone students for the 2021 school year. The exact number of places is subject to the number of eligible in-zone enrolments received.
This advertised enrolment period runs for the first portion of Term Two 2021 up to June 8th.
For out of zone students seeking enrolment within this enrolment period, the deadline for receipt of applications is Monday 3rd May.
Information and application forms can be picked up at the school office and are also available on our website www.edendaleps.school.nz.
If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot for out of zone places is required, it will be held on Wednesday 5th May.
Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot as early as possible (and within three school days of the ballot being held).

Our Kura News and Information
Bus Arrangements - Please Let Us Know
With our youngest children being five years old, passing messages on from home to school, through a child, can be fraught with problems. This is why we want all afterschool change of bus arrangements to come through the office.
We really appreciate these to be with us before 2.30 pm so that we can share them with children.
Ringing us after 2.30 pm becomes trickier as the 2.30 pm to 3.15 pm time slot is a very busy time across the whole school and office.
Absences - Use the App
We would love 2021 to be the year that all our parents use the school app for absence notifications. It is so quick and easy and helps our office staff out immensely when managing this in the first part of the day.
If you haven't downloaded our app yet, please do so and begin using it. Go to your app store and search SchoolAppsNZ. Once the app is downloaded you can search in it for us Edendale PS Southland.
You'll love it. We do.
Headlice - Please be Vigilant
Headlice is out and about and so we would ask all parents to be vigilant.
If your child is scratching, please check their head and if lice are identified please treat them before sending them back to school.
Lice can spread so quickly and easily and simple vigilance helps avoid this.
Spoons - Please Provide
We are having children coming to the staffroom and lunchtime requesting spoons. Please, when you (or your child) is putting their lunch together, check that they have a spoon for any items that require it. Thanks very much.
- Events Tops: Children need to have their events top. These can be purchased from the office.
- Transport: All the children come to school (except those entered in the 800metres - see below). We bus them down as a school to all be there at the right time. At the end of the day parents are welcome to take children home but please inform your child's teacher and fill out the bus roll. All those that remain will come back to school with us on a bus.
- 800metres: The 800 metres is running at 8.45 am on the day of the athletics. This is a change from previous years. Children need to enter this event separately as it is voluntary. It is for 9 and 10-year-old boys and girls. Please inform your child's teacher. Parents will need to transport their children down to this separately being their by 8.30 am.
The postponement day is Thursday 11th March (if we are in Covid Level One).
If we are in Covid Level Two, we will try for Wednesday 17th March.
Car Boot Sale - Postponed to Saturday 13th March 9.00 am to 12.30 pm
We have had to shift our Car Boot Sale to Saturday the 13th of March. This is due to the Level Two crowd restrictions of less than 100 still being in effect this Saturday.
Thanks for your understanding and see you next Saturday.
Cricket - Subscriptions
Thanks to the parents that have paid for the cricket Subscriptions.
There are still a few to be paid.
Please contact Andrea in the office if there are any problems.
Swimming - Week 7 - Week 8
Swimming is coming up the two weeks after next week. Please check out your child's class newsletter for their exact times.
We get a lot of lost/mixed up property during swimming. It is very helpful to have everything clearly named (clothes, togs, towel, swimming bags, shoes etc.).
When the swimming pool changing rooms are shared and everyone has the same uniform, you can see how things can easily get mixed up.
Drink Bottles - Water
Water is the best option for children to keep them hydrated and focused.
We do not want to see fizzy or energy drinks at school. The sugar content is substantial for children's growing bodies and is unhelpful for their concentration in class.
Our Team for this Week: Team Kea
Team Kea have had a fantastic start to 2021!
At the moment we have 11 superstars in our class. We are looking forward to more friendly Kea’s joining us later in the term.
We have had a busy term already with Sports Activator, touch, cricket and can not wait for more exciting things to happen this term.
Everyone has been settling into school by learning our expectations, routines and getting to know new friends. We do lots of reading, writing and maths learning.
Jackson – “I like learning maths because I learn about numbers and counting. Writing is fun because we write about cool things”.
Baz – “I like doing reading because you learn words that can help you read by yourself. It is fun doing my own story for writing”.
We enjoy creating art with the topics we are learning about.
Penny – “We all made an octopus because our letter of the week was Oo. It was fun putting on 8 legs with all the numbers. My octopus is yellow because that is my favourite colour”.
Winston – “We made ladybirds. We made them with colourful bits of paper. I like the face and the spots on mine”.
A favourite activity during the day is action stations. The children get to choose an activity they would like to go to. During this time, the children are using their social skills, creative skills and their key competencies.
Marty – “At action stations, I like playing with the hedgehog blocks, i-pads and magnetix. It is really fun when we get to have some action station time outside because I like doing the balance beams, bubbles and water play”.
Johnny – “I like playing magnetix. I make robots and sharks with the magnetix. I get to play with my friends”.

Writer of the Week - Maya Mann
I was walking through the bush when I came across a mysterious creature. It looked like a deer with a bush on top of its head!
I went to investigate.
As I was creeping over I accidentally stepped on a branch… Crack! The deer ran away!
I followed slowly after it and I found myself going through a portal that led to an enchanted forest.
There were many friendly deer that were all talking to each other. They began to talk to me and I made friends with them.
Suddenly I heard a gunshot. BOOM!
I was sucked out of the enchanted forest.
