EJMS Jaguar Weekly Feb. 19 - 23
Keeping our School Community in the Know
From Principal Pickerill's Pen
EJMS Families,
I hope everyone enjoyed the three day weekend with no school due to President’s Day on Monday.
After last week’s article on social media for parents, I wanted to share some additional resources from Common Sense Media. I hope you find the Ultimate Guide to Snapchat for parents useful.
One particular section to note is - How old do you have to be to use Snapchat?
According to the terms of service, users must be 13. You have to enter your birth date to set up an account, but there's no age verification, so it's easy for kids under 13 to sign up. Common Sense Media rates Snapchat OK for teens 16 and up, mainly because of the exposure to age-inappropriate content and the marketing ploys, such as quizzes, that collect data.
Upcoming Dates
Monday, February 19th - No School Presidents Day
Wednesday, February 21st - Dance tickets on sale during lunch
Friday, February 23rd - Club Day
Friday, February 23rd - PTO Dance
Tuesday, February 27th - Black History Month School Wide Celebration
Thursday, February 29th - African American Read-in (evening at the EJMS library)
Notes from the Nurse
A reminder to everyone that we have school-based clinics located at the following schools at the designated times:
Red Oak Elementary - Mondays from 8 - 11:30 am
East Jessamine Middle School - Mondays from 12:30 - 3:30 pm
West Jessamine Middle School - Tuesdays from 12:30 - 3:30 pm
Nicholasville Elementary - Thursdays from 8 - 11:30 am
Brookside Elementary - Thursdays from 12:30 - 3:30 pm
The nurse practitioner provides services for sick visits, such as strep tests, flu tests, etc and can prescribe medications as needed. She also offers physical exams ( athletic as well as school physicals) along with immunizations. These health services are provided to staff as well as students and their families. You can visit the school-based clinics at any location. Just talk to the health services person in your building and they will assist you in scheduling an appointment.
In EJMS Athletics:
EJMS Volleyball in Action
The girls had a great match against Boyle County on Thursday. All three grade levels won!
Volleyball VIP Faculty
It was a special night for the faculty as well. Each volleyball player chose one faculty member from EJMS or their elementary school to honor and thank for the impact that he or she has had on them. The players walked their selected faculty member out onto the floor and gave them a certificate and a custom-made t-shirt as well as posed for a great picture with everyone, including EJ, the jaguar.
Next Chance to see EJMS Volleyball
Please come out on Tuesday night to celebrate our 8th grade volleyball players!
Track and Field - Ready....Set.....
The first Track and Field practice will be held Tuesday, 2/20/24 from 4-5:30 with a parent meeting to follow immediately after. Students will need to meet in the band room (rm 141) as soon as school ends. The parent meeting will also take place in the band room. If your student is planning on joining the team, please ensure they have a physical on file at https://jessamine-ky.finalforms.com . All students are welcomed and encouraged to join the team if interested. If you have any questions email seth.mitchell@jessamine.kyschools.us.

African American Read-in Feb. 29
The National African American Read-In (AARI) is a groundbreaking effort to encourage communities to read together, centering African American books and authors. It was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. This initiative has reached more than 6 million participants around the world.
We will join in this movement for the first time this year and invite you and your family to join us. Several of our students will be reading original works as well as works by black authors and we plan to have an open mic time as well as many works available if you'd like to bring or find something to share.
The evening will also include snacks and door prizes.
We hope to see you soon!
