This week we continued learning about Caribbean countries to prepare for our upcoming quiz. Students can re-take any quiz when they are ready. The goal is to show progress by continued practice and studying. There are study links posted in Schoology. We also started a mini unit about research skills. We are practicing how to use search engines, use the best search terms, evaluate websites for credibility, and cite sources. This will help prepare us for Semester 2 where they are asked to complete a lot more research.
We are still working on summarizing nonfiction texts. This week we worked through the whole process together again and the week before break we will be completing a summative task summarizing a new article. To prepare, students can rewatch the videos on Schoology on MY thinking, as well as practice with any number of articles that I’ll be posting. They can also access the videos on my new Youtube channel that they are so excited about: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAXY8EkvSnGsntGvyBphD6A
We will continue developing comprehension/note taking techniques when reading materials. We have recently covered the RCCRR and a variation, RACRR (pronounced Racer).
I am out for surgery and recovery from now until the end of 2022. I will be checking emails next week from home, and I will be updating grades from home as well next week so students can know what they need to do if they are missing work. I plan to take a few days to recover and hope to update math grades by Tuesday or Wednesday before winter break. We have been reviewing multiplication and division with decimals in math, and we have been working on writing equations and solving them. Decimal multiplication quiz should be taken by Friday, Dec 9 if students haven’t already taken it. For our algebra unit: ask your child if they remember what “c” stands for in 3c = 102 and what the solution is! (Spoiler: this is from some math practice we did in class with finding the weights of Kodiak animals). It has been a pleasure having your children as students so far this year, and I will see you in 2023. 😊 aotto02@kibsd.org
The Kodiak Orchestras Winter Concert will be this Tuesday from 7-8pm in the Gerald C. Wilson Auditorium. The concert is FREE and open to the public. Please spread the word, and join us for a fun night of festive songs!
Diversity Club
6th grade club will meet Mondays in room 220 11:03-11:33 a.m. (during recess)
