Let's Talk TPS
District Communication - November 10, 2021
With Gratitude to Our Veterans
TPS Families -
We hope that our staff and students were able to enjoy the long weekend and beautiful fall weather. For our staff who attended the NJEA conference, we hope it was informative and enjoyable.
A reminder that our first full musical in three years happens this month when our talented THS students present Spring Awakening. Our students, staff, and volunteers have been busy working to make this an incredible performance. We also remind you that due to the mature content of the show, children under the age of 13 are only permitted when accompanied by an adult. Be sure to buy your tickets and support our theater program at http://www.thstheater.com.
I bring to your attention two Care Plus workshops for our high school students: Anxiety Strategies Group and Executive Functioning Group. Both groups are designed to assist our students as we continue the transition back to "normal". We encourage all of our THS families to consider these as well as the other resources available to our students if and when the need arises. For more details on these workshops, visit our website.
I also want to send a special thank you to our men and women in uniform, past, present, and future. With gratitude, this day and every day, we thank you for your service.
Yours in Education,
Shauna C. DeMarco
Superintendent Tenafly Public Schools

Important Reminder: Changes to Parent-Teacher Conferences
Beginning this fall and through the 2023-24 school years, per the TPS Teachers Contract, only parent-teacher conferences held on designated early dismissal days will be held in person. Evening conferences will be fully virtual for all TPS schools. These virtual conferences will occur between 5:30 and 8:30pm and will be hosted from the teacher's classroom or an alternate location that is secure and free from distractions.
For elementary schools parents, in-person conferences will be offered during the afternoon hours of two consecutive early dismissal days (December 9 and 10, 2021 and March 24 and 25, 2022), but can be virtual at the parents' request. Parents can expect conference communications offering further details from their school administration and should reach out to their respective school with any questions or concerns.
Join Us! Social Studies in the Spotlight
On Tuesday, December 7th, TPS invites the Tenafly community to a Social Studies Showcase. Beginning at 7:00pm in the Lalor Library Media Center at Tenafly High School, our Supervisors of Curriculum & Instruction will provide an overview of Tenafly’s K-12 Social Studies curriculum and discuss the ways in which that curriculum addresses the New Jersey Student Learning Standards.
Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about social studies instruction at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Teacher leaders will be on hand to share additional information regarding the specific curriculum, resources, and learning activities in each grade and course.

Diversity in Classical Music
The Grammy-Award-Winning Harlem Quartet, in residence at Montclair State University, shared their talents with Director of Choirs and Orchestras Jim Millar's THS orchestra classes on Monday, November 8th. Harlem Quartet has been featured on WNBC, CNN, NBC’s Today Show, WQXR-FM, and the News Hour with Jim Lehrer, and it performed in 2009 for President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House. The quartet played the first movement of Mozart's Dissonance Quartet, "Strum" by Jessie Montgomery, and the first and second movements of a Romantic period piece by Fanny Mendelssohn. Educational and enjoyable!
