Birthday Info
Birthday Celebrations
Our class celebrates each student's birthday! For those students with birthdays on a weekday, we will celebrate them that day. For birthdays that fall on the weekends, we will celebrate some time during the week. Summer birthdays will be celebrated on your child's preferred day. Your child is welcome to bring treats for the class, they will need to be store bought.
Birthday Treat Policy
We always want to celebrate student birthdays at Sunnyside! Our teachers all have little birthday celebrations that they do for students to contribute to them feeling special on their birthday. However, we are seeing a need to set a few guidelines due to allergy needs of students, last-minute treats being delivered and not having time to get them out and being efficient in the time it takes to celebrate in class. As a staff, we have decided that students can bring birthday treats on their birthday for their class if they follow the guidelines below:
· Store bought
· Individually wrapped
· Must fit in student backpack
We would appreciate if birthday treats come with the student at the beginning of the day so they can notify their teacher and the teacher has time to plan a short time to celebrate in class. We understand that sometimes parents will need to drop them off but please still follow the guidelines above and bring them as early in the day as possible.
Smart Watches/Phones at School
Sunnyside families!
Kids are welcome to wear smart watches to school. However, once the bell rings at 8:15, the watch is to be used as a watch- not a phone. Once the bell rings at 2:25pm and students have left the building they can use their watch as a phone. Our policy is that students are not using cell phones at school, including at recess- this includes watches being used as phones. If there is an emergency and you need to contact your student or if they need to contact you during school hours, we will do this through the office. We kindly ask for your support in this moving forward!

Tardy Policy
Student Tardy Policy
School begins at 8:15 AM Monday through Thursday and at 9:15 AM on Fridays. All students are expected to be in their seats and ready to learn at that time. If students arrive at the school later then 8:15 or 9:15, they need to check in through the office before coming into class. Please call the office by 8:30 AM if your child is ordering hot lunch and will be late. If your child has not ordered hot lunch by 8:30 AM, please ensure that you pack a cold lunch for them that day. Students will be expected to come right into class, quietly, and begin working on what the class is doing.
Follow Up Procedures:
5th Tardy: The child’s teacher will contact the parent regarding the child’s tardies to inform the parent and offer assistance.
8th Tardy: The building principal will contact a parent to discuss the tardy concern.
12th Tardy: The principal will notify the parent of the concern in writing.
16th Tardy: The principal will notify the parent of the concern in writing.
- 20th Tardy: The principal may complete a truancy referral and notify the parent of the referral in writing.
Student Absence Policy
The Board of Trustees in Idaho Falls School District #91 has adopted an attendance policy in an effort to help students be successful in school. The following steps listed below may be utilized in an effort to improve attendance:
Five (5) absences/tardies in a trimester trigger a review by the child's homeroom teacher. This review may include a conference with the child and parent/guardian.
Each additional absence may trigger a review by the principal. The review may include a conference with the classroom teacher, building principal and other staff members to discuss supportive measures to help improve attendance.
Lifetime patterns of attendance are formed in elementary school, and good attendance is positively related to student achievement. Studies show that students who have poor attendance in the elementary years are much more likely to struggle later in school. Please continue to encourage good school attendance. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a meeting, please contact your child's teacher or the school office.
Homework
As a general rule, we don't give much homework in 3rd grade. The work that comes home will have a purpose. We highly suggest that your student reads 20 minutes per night, at least four nights a week. Sometimes if a student needs extra time to finish an assignment, it will be sent home with a note to finish and bring back the next day. Spelling should be practiced nightly at home, the students do not have to turn in spelling homework. If your student is consistently spending more than an hour on homework, please contact teacher. A reason may be that they are not using their time wisely, or that they may need to have assignments modified.
Recess and Weather
Each student is expected to go outside during recess. Please see that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. The students will remain inside if the temperature is zero degrees with wind chill or below. If your child is unable to participate in recess or P.E., a note of excuse is required.
Volunteers
Please contact your child's teacher for volunteer information.
