Evan Ahrendt author/illustrator of the children’s book “Watson in Space” visited our classroom via zoom on May 5th. Evan spoke with the class about how he became an author and his love for illustrating. Evan also joined the Sato Book Bus on May 12th and raffled off signed copies of his book. Dear Sato Parents and Guardians,

It’s data collection time again for Beaverton’s Safe Routes to School program. The purpose of this program is to make walking and biking to school safe, convenient, and fun.

Parent’s and guardian’s input into how students travel to and from schools and their impression of the safety of the route is valuable as the city and county prioritize needed improvements for our roads. The following link was generated from the National Safe Routes to School Center and will be used to give us a good picture of how students are getting to and from schools throughout the district.

The school’s survey will be open for responses until May 31.

We appreciate your help in giving us information to make our program effective for all Beaverton School District students.

Please take a few moments to complete the BSD Annual Parent Survey! Our goal is to ensure that every member of our school community feels welcomed, valued, and informed, so it is important for all parents/guardians to complete the survey.

A link to the 2021 Annual Parent Survey will be sent to all valid parent email addresses via School Messenger on Sunday, May 9. The deadline to participate is Sunday, May 31.

The first sections of the Sato and Yoshihara Trails are built and named. In years to come, their additional sections will be built and serve as major pedestrian connections to neighborhood destinations, like Sato (hence the trail name "Sato" to support school wayfinding while also celebrating Japanese American heritage).

The opening event is currently planned for Saturday, June 12 (time is TBD) at the intersection of the new Sato and Yoshihara Trails and will welcome local community members. THPRD intends to continue working with the Consular Office of Japan in Portland and the Japanese American Museum of Oregon to plan the event.

Sato students will participate by (optional participation by class):

• Watching video lessons on Japanese Cultural Heritage that teachers can share with their students.
• After watching the video, students will write or draw something they have learned or personally experienced about Japanese Cultural Heritage on cards.
• The cards will be tied onto the park's trees at the intersection of the two new trails by June 12. Visitors can see what students have written and drawn, and they can make cards of their own.

Sato students will need to return their Chromebooks and iPads (along with the power cord and stylus on the newer Chromebooks) to Sato on Monday, June 21st between 12:00-4:00.

To make it more fun! Students can grab a popsicle when they turn in their device!!

The Oregon eviction protections are set to expire at the end of June. This means renters will need to pay back rent that's still due. The state will start taking applications today 5/18/21, for additional rental assistance through the Oregon Emergency Rent Assistance Program. People are eligible if at least one person in the household had a financial impact from the pandemic (a lost job, decrease in income), and their household income is at or below 80% of the area's median income (about $77,000 for a family of 4 in the Portland metro, or $51,000 in rural communities).

Tenants can be approved for up to 12 months of past-due rent, and three months' upcoming rent. The payments will go directly to landlords, property owners, and utility companies.

The money will be allocated based on need, so everyone who applies for the program will go through a review process.

Assistance is offered to all renters, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.
