Laker Anchor
September 25, 2022
Greetings, Laker Families-
Fall is here and there are so many fun things on the calendar! 4th/5th grade Parks & Rec after school soccer is back and being coached by our very own Mr. Holme and Mrs. Warren. The PTA fall fundraiser “Raise Craze” will kick off on Monday (9/26) and students will be bringing home the fundraiser instructions (also see attachment). The goal of this fundraiser is promoting “acts of kindness,” and we love how it fits into our school wide theme this year! Picture packets should have gone home in backpacks on Friday so that your family can prepare for picture day on September 30. We will also be honoring our Laker of the Month recipients for September at the Laker of the Month assemblies coming soon in early October. The families of selected students will receive an invitation from their child’s teacher to attend. Finally, Fall Benchmark testing will be taking place this coming week for each grade level so please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
October: National Disability Awareness Month and National Bullying Prevention Month
Each of our classroom teachers will be incorporating age-appropriate conversations and lessons about these concepts into their instruction to support our school wide theme of
“Be Here…Be You…Belong.”
Nuts and Bolts
Now that school is well underway, we wanted to make sure that we are all on the same page regarding school/district expectations. We are asking that you take some time to review the updated 22-23 Student and Family Information Guide with your child(ren), specifically the Dress Code (pp. 46-47) as well as Technology Code of Conduct (pp. 34-38).
We understand at Emerald Hills that personal mobile devices (specifically, Smartwatches) are becoming increasingly common on the wrists of our students per parent request. In order to support and comply with our district policy as stated in the 22-23 Student and Family Information Guide (pp.36-37), we are asking for your support with the following:
Cell phones should remain in backpacks and are not to be used during the school day.
Smartwatches must remain in “school mode” during the school day. (If you have the option as the parent to set this “mode” up on the device, we are asking for your support with this.) This means that the watch should be used for telling time only and may not be used for calling or texting during the school day.
If you are in need of getting a message to your child, please contact our main office at (253) 891-4750. It is critical that any changes in transportation be communicated directly to the office by 3:00pm so that we can ensure your child can be safely supported by the EHE staff at the end of the school day.
Smartwatches (and cell phones) may not be used for taking pictures or video while at school or on the bus ride to/from school. If a Smartwatch becomes a distraction to classroom instruction, the teacher or administrator may ask the student to put it into the backpack for the day.
Thank you for your partnership and ongoing support.
Attendance Matters
Did you know? Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school - and themselves. Start building this habit in elementary school so that they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college.
Did you know? Even being late to school may lead to poor attendance. Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
