Pirates Post
Week of February 28th
Message from Principal Drew...
All Juniors will take the ACT this Tuesday, March 1st. The ACT is used by colleges and universities as a part of the admissions process for all students. Students who may not be considering college as an option now will still want to do their very best on this test to keep the option for further education open in the future. A score of 19 indicates proficiency on the ACT and we know our Juniors are up to this task. We have had a very good time of preparation for our Juniors over the past three weeks to help them do their best on Tuesday. Juniors get plenty of rest on Monday night and be sure to eat breakfast on Tuesday morning so you are at your very best for the ACT.
We held a well attended and highly successful Parent night this past Tuesday. A huge thank you to our elective teachers, student leaders, cafeteria staff, guidance department, and administration for making this event a great experience for all who attended. Registration for all students will be ongoing through the month of March for the 2022-2023 school year. Our guidance counselors will be meeting with each student individually to review their current progress and to plan their schedule for the upcoming school year. Parents we encourage you to take an active role in your child's scheduling and plans for the future.
Parents we need your help with a couple of items. Cell phones are great tools and help keep each of us connected to those around us. However, they can also be a major distraction from learning in the classroom. Parents we are asking that you do not call or message your students during the school day. Students that are engaged with their phones are less likely to retain the information from their classes which creates difficulty for them to be successful. As a reminder, cell phones should only be used before school and during lunches but never during classes. Parents we also ask that you help monitor dress code for students as they leave each morning. We will post the dress code on our Facebook page for you to review with your child. The loss of instructional time due to dress code violations is slowly increasing as the weather changes. Helping your child to be in compliance when they leave home each day will eliminate dress code issues and minimize the loss of instructional time.
Congratulations to our Women's and Men's basketball teams on two very successful seasons. The Men's team finished their season on Thursday night at Wilson Prep while our Women's team fought right to the end with Fall's Lake on Saturday before losing in overtime. Thanks to the coaches, players, managers, parents and fans for making sure both teams had the greatest opportunity for success each time they stepped on the court.
The NCHSAA Scholar-Athlete program is one of the Association's most popular voluntary programs and recognizes excellence in the classroom and the playing court or field. The program includes recognizing varsity teams that attain certain grades and individual athletes. Individual Scholar-Athletes attain at least a 3.5 weighted grade point average for the semester in which they competed. A varsity team earns Scholar-Athlete recognition by attaining a 3.1 (unweighted) aggregate GPA for that designated semester in the team division. PCHS had 78 out of 156 student athletes qualify as Scholar-Athletes in the Fall semester. Our volleyball, cross country, and Women's Swim team qualified for team recognition as well. While we are proud of all that our student-athletes accomplish on the field we are even more excited by their outstanding performance in the classroom. Great job Pirates!
This week will be another busy week at PCHS.
Monday our baseball and softball teams open their seasons at home versus Currituck. JV baseball starts at 4 with Varsity to follow and Softball starts at 5.

Friday our Women's soccer team will at Edenton at 5 and our JV and Varsity baseball teams will host Greenville Rose starting at 5.
