PDF Translation: Canva Can Do That! Plus Other Translation Tips
At semester change, you may find yourself with new students in your class in secondary, and we always have newcomers joining our district throughout the school year. So, here are a few tips to increase access, equity and inclusion if you encounter language barriers.
Translate.google.com is a great tool for quick translations, but also to create translated materials.
- Clicking on the document tab allows you to translate whole files such as worksheets.
- Some pdfs will not translate via this route, but Canva may be able to translate them.
- Translate classroom slides by downloading them as an image and use the images tab to translate them. Works for SMART notebook files too!
- It may be faster to create slides in Canva and let Canva's "Magic Switch" translate them for you.
Canva
- "Magic Switch" can translate any design text!
- Offers a PDF specific translator. If you get an error from google translate (like "can't translate scanned files"), this route may work better.
- PDF Editor: Need to make some tweaks on a pdf but don't have Adobe? Try Canva!
- Make sure you are logging in with your work google account to have access to all the premiums features
PowerPoint (office.com)
- Don't forget you can turn on live closed captions in presentation mode AND translate those captions in real time. I can teach my class in English and PP will display Ukrainian for my Newcomer student from Ukraine for example.
