Fall is in the air and the first full month of school is now behind us. The staff and administration at CBE couldn’t be more proud of how well our students are doing, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the year will bring!
Our first round of conferences will be taking place on Tuesday, October 10 and Tuesday, October 17, from 4:00 - 8:00 pm, each day. You should have received an email allowing you to sign up for a conference time to meet with your child’s teachers. There will also be a tech session available for those of you that would like help better understanding PowerSchool and/or Canvas. There will be 2 times each night, 4:30 pm and 5:15 pm. We look forward to seeing you on conference night!
As the Activities Coordinator for CBE, I want to remind parents, and students, about all the awesome opportunities we have available to students as extracurricular activities. Whether your child enjoys sports, music, drama, art, legos or chess, just to name a few, there is always something available for them to be involved in throughout the school year. Research shows that students who are involved in extracurricular activities naturally perform better academically. It’s truly a win-win! For a complete list of upcoming activities available, please click on this link.
As Mr. Franklin pointed out in September, communication is important to a successful school year. I want to reiterate that once again. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s education and school day, please reach out to the classroom teachers. Additionally, you can always reach out to your child’s principal as well. On behalf of the rest of the administrative team at CBE, I want to say thank you for helping us get off to a great start to the 2023-2024 school year! Remember, “Great Relationships Produce Great Students.”

CBE PTA News
Did you know Carl Ben Eielson is the only middle school in ND to achieve the National PTA School of Excellence designation? This important designation recognizes all the great work that has been done in family & school partnerships, and it helps Carl Ben stand out when applying for National PTA grants and other program opportunities. The School of Excellence designation covers 2 school years and this is our year to reapply.
How can you help us renew our School of Excellence? By signing up to be a Carl Ben PTA member. We need greater member support to help drive engagement and to show that our families and teachers care about our student success. No volunteering needed, no attendance at PTA meetings required (although we would love to see you there), just take 2 minutes and sign up through Power school or Givebacks. If neither of these options work for you, please reach out to carlbenpta@gmail.com and we can send you a paper membership form.
Parent teacher conferences are coming up and the PTA has put together a list of items for the teacher meals. Thank you to those who have signed up so far. There are still a few items that are needed. You can check it out here.
Our next PTA meeting is Monday November 6th from 7pm-8pm in the CBE library or you can join by Zoom .
EARLY OUT DISMISSAL DATES @ CBE
For the 2023-2024 school year, Fargo Public Schools (FPS) will implement four “early release” school days for students. On these days, students will be dismissed two hours early at each building. The early dismissal will allow our teaching staff to gather in an extended Professional Learning Community (PLC). Principals will send out specific building schedules (see below).
During these early release days, our teachers will be focusing on analyzing student data, setting goals for student learning, and reviewing and planning research-based instructional strategies for students who need support and those who need enrichment. Teachers will collaborate with grade or content-level peers to review, reflect, and learn from each other in meeting students' needs.
We understand that early release days may cause some inconvenience for parents and guardians, but this is an important step towards improving our teaching practices and ultimately benefiting our students' learning outcomes. We appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

UNDELIVERED EMAILS
If you use Hotmail or Gmail and you suspect you are not receiving school notification emails, you can add the noreply@fargo.k12.nd.us email address to your account as a safe sender, which will then allow these messages to be delivered. The easiest way to do this is to just add the address to your contacts/people list. Click here for a guide on how to do this.
BIO Teens - After School Club for female students
We have a new after-school club opportunity for female 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. It’s called BIO Teens. BIO stands for Beautiful Inside and Out. The mission of BIO Teens is to improve the self-esteem and mental health of adolescent girls. The after-school club is funded by BIO Girls and the North Dakota Community Foundation's Statewide Greatest Needs Fund.
BIO Teens will take place on Mondays after school, from 3:45-4:45pm. Club lessons and activities will begin on 10/16 and run for 10 weeks until 12/18. The focus of this fall session will be on Confidence, including lessons, activities, and discussion on risk-taking / being brave, fear of failure, perfectionism, standing up for self, and empowerment. There may be additional opportunities during the winter and spring to participate in the BIO Teens after-school club.
If you would like your daughter to take part in this club, please contact our activities secretary at 446-1702 or have your daughter sign-up in the main office.
Attendance
Students are expected to be in their classes every day, except in the case of illness, school related activities, family emergency, or religious observance. Written Notification of School Accountability Report
Dear Parent/Guardian,
North Dakota has launched a dashboard called “Insights,” designed to help communities across the state access important information about K-12 districts and schools. Insights features easy-to-read reports on multiple measures of school success, including:
- · Student Achievement
- · Choice Ready Results
- · Performance Comparisons
- · English Learner Progress
- · Graduation Rates
- · School and State Accountability Results
- · School Improvement Information
- · Post-Secondary Education
- · School Environment
Transparency to the Public
North Dakota is committed to informing communities about how well our schools are doing. North Dakota’s future success depends on tapping into the potential of all students, so they graduate choice ready with the knowledge, skills, and disposition to be successful.
State education departments are required to annually create an accountability report for every public school in the state per the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The school accountability reports outline how schools perform on the accountability elements North Dakota selected within its ESSA plan.
How is our School Doing?
To find more information about our School Accountability Report, visit the dashboard at Insights.nd.gov, select “Find My School,” and search alphabetically. The school accountability report is posted under the Dashboard heading.
Please note that the data made available to the public masks or hides data for groups with ten or fewer students to protect confidential information about individual students. Therefore, if data is unavailable to less than ten students, it will say “no data available.”
Family Engagement
We have strong plans for working to improve the educational programs at our school. We want you and your child(ren) to continue actively participating in our educational system. Please help support our high expectations for student achievement by participating in the school educational initiatives, offering input and support in our endeavors to raise student achievement, or volunteering at the school. Meeting our school’s goals will take a united effort, and I look forward to working with our families to ensure success for each student.
Continuous Improvement
All schools engage in continuous improvement for general support; therefore, our school has completed a continuous improvement plan through Cognia.
As part of the overall school improvement plan, a strategy map is generated for each school. Our strategy map, outlining our key school improvement initiatives, is also available on Insights.
Carl Ben Eielson Middle School is not a participating Title I school, with a student membership count of 645.
If you have any questions regarding the information in the memorandum, please contact Brad Franklin, Principal, at 701-446-1704 or by email at franklb@fargo.k12.nd.us .
Sincerely,
Brad Franklin, Principal

Liz’s Closet
A Discreet, Free Resource for Carl Ben Eielson Students in Need
What: Carl Ben Eielson strives as a team to meet the needs of all students as part of our mission to build a foundation for success. Liz’s Closet, a free resource at Carl Ben Eielson, aligns with this mission by providing students in need with items such as clothing, hygiene products, non-perishable food items, etc.
At Carl Ben Eielson, we hope to provide developmentally appropriate support to students in need by offering a means to obtain basic food and hygiene products in a discreet manner. Students utilizing Liz’s Closet will have access to reusable bags, so items are less visible as students are leaving the building.
Where: Liz’s Closet will be located in Student Services. The room being used as “Liz’s Closet” will be accessible through a trusted adult in the building (teachers, counselors, administrators, paraprofessionals, designated staff).
Who: Any student in need of these items is welcome to take what he/she needs with the help of a trusted adult.
How: Although students are welcome to directly ask a trusted adult at Carl Ben Eielson to use Liz’s Closet, to maintain privacy as best as possible, a student can simply draw a star on a sheet of paper and bring it to a trusted adult. The adult will then instruct the student as to when he/she can go to Student Services to collect what is needed. If this adult does not have a time that works for him/her, the adult will notify the appropriate counselor or Student Services staff member to be expecting this student sometime within the school day. Once in Student Services, the student will be escorted to the closet and can take what is needed.
If you know of anyone who may need to utilize this resource, please do not hesitate to contact a Carl Ben Eielson counselor. Additionally, if you would like to donate shelf-stable food, school supplies, or hygiene products to Liz’s Closet, please contact Rachel Johnson (school counselor) at 446-1715.

Communication is important to a successful school year. If at any time you have a question or concern about your child’s classroom, please feel free to contact their teacher. In addition, please feel free to contact the office if you have concerns about your child’s education and school day. Together we will have a great school year!
