Agriculture:
Livestock Production
This class provides an opportunity to work with live animals while learning skills relating to animal systems, anatomy, nutrition, reproduction, genetics, pests and diseases, and business operation. Students are also given the opportunity to develop leadership skills through the FFA Organization.
It should be noted that this is a one semester course that grants 1 full credit.
Small Animal Management
This extremely popular course covers a wide-variety of household pets including:
Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Mice, Rats, Chinchillas, Guinea Pigs, Sugar Gliders, Hamsters, Gerbils, Reptiles, Amphibians, Birds, and Fish
It is highly suggested that students interested in the Veterinary Medical Applications courses take this course first. Students are also given the opportunity to develop leadership skills through the FFA Organization.
Wildlife and Fisheries Management
This course provides instruction and training necessary for the Texas Hunter Education Certification.
Students are also given the opportunity to develop leadership skills through the FFA Organization.

Professional Communications
Debate
In Debate, students will study argumentation and competitive debate strategies. They will learn various styles of debate and competitive speaking. Students who take debate will also have the opportunity to sign up for and compete in competitive debate tournaments around the state and nation throughout the year and have opportunities to qualify to state and national level tournaments. This is a yearlong course which will satisfy the speech credit needed to graduate high school and will earn students elective credit as well. Students who take a liking to debate also have the option to continue debate through high school by taking Debate 2, 3, and 4 in subsequent years.

Health Science Technologies:
Medical Terminology
This course is designed to introduce students to the structure of medical terms, including prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, singular/plural forms, plus medical abbreviations and acronyms. The course allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology.
It should be noted that this is a one semester course that grants 1 full credit.
Principles of Health Science
This is an introductory course designed to provide students an overview of systems in the healthcare industry.

Art:
Art 1 2D Drawing
This course introduces students to the elements and principles of art through a two-dimensional lens while learning a variety of media, concepts and techniques. This will include elements and principles of design, sequential techniques with drawing, painting, printmaking, low-relief sculpture, ceramics and digital media. Students practice skills, explore historical and cultural relevance, gain an understanding of creative expression and learn to respond and evaluate artwork through close observation using critical thinking skills.
It should be noted that this class can be taken as an Honors class.
Art 1 3D Sculpture
This course introduces students to the elements and principles of art through a three-dimensional lens learning additive and subtractive sculpture, ceramics, and digital work. Students will utilize drawing and painting techniques through the creation of three-dimensional objects. Students practice skills, explore historical and cultural relevance, gain an understanding of creative expression and learn to respond and evaluate artwork through close observation using critical thinking.

Dance:
Dance 1
This course will focus on dance within a variety of dance genres at an introductory level. Students will acquire vocabulary and skills in ballet, jazz, modern, tap, hip hop, and other genres. Dance history, choreography and performance skills will be introduced. The class is participatory in nature, utilizing movement as a form of creative expression. Specific attire will be required. Attendance at after school rehearsals and performances may be required.
It should be noted that this course can be taken for a fine arts or a physical education credit.
Drill Prep (Drill Fundamentals)
Successful completion of both semesters will satisfy the PE credit required for graduation.

Music Education:
Band 1
It should be noted that an audition is required for this course.
Jazz Band
This course is for those students interested pursuing the study and performance of jazz/popular music. Students will perform in a variety of formal and informal settings and may participate in festivals and competitions. This course must be taken in conjunction with Band 1 except when instrumentation needs cannot be met with students within the band program. Additional supply fees may be associated with this course; however, Plano ISD will take steps to ensure that costs will not prevent access.

Orchestra
The Orchestra program at Vines High School offers opportunities for students of all experience levels to receive instruction on the Violin, Viola, Cello, and Bass. We have 3 ensembles: Chamber, Philharmonic, and Sinfonia and students perform throughout the year at evening concerts and school or community events. For the 2021-22 school year, we are planning an overnight trip to San Antonio that will include a concert at the State Capitol. The Vines Orchestra is a fun way to make friends, connect to our school and we look forward to having you be a part of the orchestra family!

Theatre: Production
Students enrolled in the Theatre Production courses will deepen their theatrical study with enhanced experiences and will explore the relevance of theatre-related activities in everyday life. An emphasis will be placed on strengthening the individual's self-concept through the study of various acting techniques, technical theatre, play production, voice & diction, acting, performance, movement, history and literature. Students are required to participate in all productions on their campus either as a performer or technician. A research paper/portfolio will be required and students will be required to read plays and see local live theatrical productions.

Engineering:
Intro to Engineering Design (PLTW)
This is the foundation course in a series of PLTW* pre-engineering courses designed to introduce students to the field of engineering in preparation for a career. The major focus is learning how to take an idea through the design process that will eventually be manufactured or produced. Students will use state of the art 3D design software to help design solutions to different design projects. Working in teams, students will learn about documenting solutions, solving problems, and communicating solutions to other students and members of the professional engineering community.
This course provides instruction and training necessary for the AutoDesk Inventor Certified User Certification.

Dollars and Sense
Principles of Business, Marketing, and Finance
This course will provide the opportunity for students to gain knowledge and skills in economics and private enterprise systems, global business, marketing of goods and services, advertising, and product pricing. Students will analyze the sales process and financial management principles.
This is a fantastic beginning class into the business world and for any student wanting to understand business basics, this is a must take! This class also works extremely well paired with Virtual Business, as that class allows the student to apply the principles they have learned in this class towards building a business of their own.

It should be noted that this course is recommended to well-motivated students that enjoy self-teaching with teacher guidance, as most of the class is taught using a program that is quick-paced and requires focus and attention. This course provides instruction and training necessary for the globally recognized MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist Certifications) exam.
Video Game Design
This one-semester course will allow students to explore one of the largest industries in the field of technology. Students will learn gaming, computerized gaming, evolution of gaming, artistic aspects of perspective, design, and animation, and technical concepts of collision theory and programming logic. Students will participate in a simulation of real video game design with developing technical proficiency in constructing an original 2D game design.

Vikettes Drill Team
Drill team is a precision performing group that provides students an opportunity to perform at a variety of venues. Performance may include athletic events, competitions, community events, and stage shows. Drill team membership requires weekly after-hours practice and rehearsals. Specific attire, including shoes, will be required.

Successful completion of both semesters of this course will satisfy the PE credit or Fine Arts credit required for graduation.

AVID

PALS:
Peer Assistance and Leadership
This course provides selected students an opportunity to work in a helping role with students on their own campus and/or with students from feeder middle schools and elementary schools, in order to facilitate a more positive school experience and more informed and responsible decision-making. PAL students will receive training in areas such as communication and listening skills, tutoring, group dynamics and other means of helping younger students deal with issues of concern to them. Students can only earn one credit in four years.

Plano FFA
Are you a crazy animal lover? Love flowers or keeping plants alive? Do you envision yourself as a veterinarian, a welder, a floral designer, or biologist? Well FFA is definitely the place for you!
FFA is a leadership group where you have the opportunity to participate in a ton of activities! -
-You can raise livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, and rabbits.
-You can participate in our fall LDE contests, where you will learn valuable life skills, like studying, public speaking, speech preparing, interviewing, etc.
-You can participate in our amazing spring teams, where we travel the state competing at horse judging, livestock judging, meats judging, wildlife, vet tech skills, and more!
-We host monthly meetings that include dinner, a volunteer opportunity, group projects, and fun!
There really is so much to be involved in that everyone will find something in FFA. Plus you get the cool knowledge that you are a member of the largest youth organization in the world!
FFA is a dynamic youth organization that changes lives and prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
FFA develops members’ potential and helps them discover their talent through hands-on experiences, which give members the tools to achieve real-world success.
Members are future chemists, veterinarians, government officials, entrepreneurs, bankers, international business leaders, teachers and premier professionals in many career fields.
FFA is an intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership.

Drill Team
The team also performs at the Plano/Clark/Vines cluster game, Vines pep rallies, the Plano Senior High Homecoming Parade, the City of Plano Christmas Parade, several Vines basketball games, different events around Plano, and at their own annual Spring Show.
The Vines Vikettes are supported by the VHS Kick-It Booster Club and are under the direction of Ms. Nicole Dillon.
Robotics
Plano ISD offers extra-curricular robotics because students in FIRST® programs:

Choir
The Vines Choir Department enjoys a rich tradition of excellence, pride, and high musical standards. We have a blast singing every day and sharing the joy of music together!
Vines Choirs are consistent Sweepstakes winners at UIL contest and have received Outstanding and Best In Class on our San Antonio trip competitions. Students rate high individually in Region Choir and Solo/Ensemble. Our choir members are involved in many areas at Vines – athletics, drill team, numerous AP classes, theatre, debate, Foreign Language, etc. You can do it all! By striving to maintain our standard of excellence, the Vines choir students continue to make our program a success while being a vital part of the choir!
Music is proven to make you smarter, teaches discipline, relieves stress, gives a sense of achievement, provides positive peer groups, and is fun!! We sing a variety of music – from songs you hear on the radio to standard choral classics. We sing five concerts during the year and there are opportunities to audition for solos and small group performances. Auditions are held for placement. The Vines Choir pop group, Soundsations, meets outside the school day. No matter what your choral experience is, there is a place for you!

NHS (National Honor Society)
The National Honor Society at Vines High School is an active group that serves our school and our community. We focus on scholarship, service, leadership, and character throughout the year and help students prepare for life beyond high school. We will have a meeting in the fall to discuss membership qualifications and provide information about the program. Students interested in joining NHS at a Senior High must be a part of NHS as a 10th grader.
