Family and Community Resources:
The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is nationally recognized as a leader in teaching and learning. Our rigorous instructional program engages students in learning through relevant, real-world classroom experiences. The HCPSS curriculum is written by Howard County teachers and is designed to provide students a thorough grounding in essential knowledge and skills that will give them a leading edge in tomorrow's global environment. Our curriculum challenges students to think strategically, solve problems, innovate, collaborate, communicate effectively, and achieve goals.
The HCPSS curriculum is aligned to the Common Core State Standards. These standards for literacy and mathematics education resulted from a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The Standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce. Additional information about the Common Core State Standards Links to an external site..
HCPSS CURRICULUM IS...
1. Deep: Mastery of essential skills is emphasized at each level, so students build the skills and confidence to tackle more advanced concepts.
2. Broad: Instruction crosses content areas – for example, science and social studies curriculum incorporates reading, math, and writing skills
3. Relevant: Classroom lessons are reinforced through hands-on activities and real-world experiences.
4. Active: Students learn by exploration, using creativity, critical thinking and analysis to discover answers to problems, and practice collaboration and effective communication.
The Family and Community Resource Pages have a wealth of knowledge. You can find information regarding English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health and much more! Included on these grade level pages are resources such as What Your Child Will Learn", a parent video library, and ideas of how to support your child. Throughout each year we celebrate the incredible diversity of all of our students at Lisbon. In February, we focus on Black History Month and highlight the important contributions of Black and African Americans who have helped shape our country and contributed to our society.
Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today. This newsletter has resources that can be utilized in the classroom or at home to celebrate Black History Month. Throughout the month of February, Lisbon Elementary School will recognize Black History Month and highlight the many accomplishments of African Americans.
There are a number of resources our teachers use throughout the school year and in February. There are quite a number of excellent resources teachers use during their instruction.
National School Counseling Week 2023
The special week honoring school counselors provides recognition for school counselors who implement comprehensive school counseling programs. We are fortunate to have school counselors in each of our schools throughout Howard County.
At Lisbon, our school counselor, Mrs. Alicia Taylor, is a vital part of our school and student services team. She actively engages in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents. Mrs. Taylor helps to partner with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today's world. Mrs. Taylor also provides support for teachers to help them meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of our students. Please join us in thanking Mrs. Taylor for her dedication to our Lisbon students and community.
February Conference Lunch
Hello Lisbon Families! February conferences are quickly approaching! We would like to support our awesome staff on those busy days by providing lunch on Thursday, February 9th. Since it is a short break between dismissal and conferences, we are serving pizza, salad and desserts. The PTA will cover the cost of pizza, so we only need a few volunteers to cover a short list of items. Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. All donations should be dropped off at school by Wednesday, February 8th. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to drop off at my home ahead of time. Thanks so much for your generous support of our amazing staff! Carmen Castiglia 410-491-4210.

Donations Needed for Reverse Engineering Instructional Seminar
Many 4th grade students have signed up to participate in the Reverse Engineering Instructional Seminar. Students will take apart objects to see how they work and discover the technology used inside.
As the holiday season approaches, many of you may begin purging closets and cleaning out toy rooms. If you have any items that you wouldn’t mind donating for our reverse engineering students, please send them in with your child. There is a collection box in the main hallway and another one outside of Mrs. O'Connor's classroom. This collection will continue through February.
Items do not need to be in working order, but they should be safe to disassemble, have a way to be taken apart (flat-head or Phillips-head screws), and no larger than approximately a shoe box. Some suggested items are below:
-Calculator
-Clock/Watch
-Alarm Clock/Radio
-Television Remote Control
-See and Say/Etch a Sketch Toys
