Fall Athletics Update
This week Volleyball and Football are hosting games at McKay High School. Both Soccer programs find themselves on the road looking to continue improving their teams. Our McKay sports teams face challenges but often find ways to make the best of their circumstances. Each day they make our community proud.
Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Honoree
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McKay Football, is Kyrin Fuimaono.
Kyrin, a senior and 3-year team captain, plays quarterback for the for the 1-0 Scots. In the 31-28 win over Lebanon Kyrin completed 25 of 38 passes for 289 yards and 3 TDs. On the ground he had 8 carries for 60 yards. But he didn’t stop there. On the other side of the ball he had 4 tackles, an interception, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup on the goal line that helped secure the win. He also stepped in as the punter. From Coach Piper: "[Kyrin] continues to lead and connect all players in our program, as well as being a role model in our community."
Kyrin was an AOTW in 2021 and 2022 as well.

Safety Updates
Safety Reminders
As we move into a new school year this is a great time to remind your students about some safety initiatives that we began in the 2022-23 school year and will continue into this year.
- Opening or Propping Doors Open: Safety is one of our top priorities, with over 70 exits in our building it becomes vital that all persons entering the building after a tardy bell, first check in with the main office. Students who are found to be opening doors or leaving them open for others to enter can face behavioral consequences due to their actions.
- Leaving and Returning to Campus: Here at McKay we have an open campus policy that allows students to leave during their assigned lunch time and return (on time). A large majority of our students use these opportunities safely. Students who misuse this opportunity, and use it to bring back prohibited items are subject to safety check (checks of their belongings) upon their return to campus.
- Incidents on Campus: At McKay High School we are continually working to dismiss an inaccurate narrative that exists around our city. We work with adolescents who at times are not yet equipped to deal with things happening in their lives. This may result in incidents on campus. When these incidents take place our staff immediately work to return our campus to a safe and calm environment. Students who refuse to follow instructions during this time may face the same consequences as those involved in the incidents. This can look like refusing to follow adult instructions, as well as the filming of incidents. If your student is found to be sharing (spreading) these videos across media platforms, or sharing with classmates they will face consequences. These actions can often incite further incidents around campus, for that reason we need students help in keeping our environment safe for everyone.
We ask that you continually ask your students questions around safety at McKay High School. Keep having these conversations throughout the school year, and encourage your students to report things that they see to our Scot Center staff.
Upcoming Safety Drills
This message is to inform you that there will be a fire and lockdown drill this week. Please help prepare your students by making sure your student attends classes when at school, is on time and signs in and out when they leave the classroom. The safety of our students is our top priority.
Thank you for your support to ensure all our students graduate college and career ready.

Student Parking @ McKay High School
Effective starting 9/11/2023, students who drive to school and need a parking space will need to purchase a parking permit from the Bookkeeper. This parking permit will be required in every vehicle on campus. If a vehicle does not have a permit, a written warning will be issued and ticketing will begin after that. Students need to park on campus rather than in neighborhoods near campus. Neighbors have been encouraged to contact Salem PD if there is a car parked near their home. Vehicles may be ticketed and/or towed.
