The Pulse of the Pride

June 16, 2023
Lyme School Friends,
We had a spectacular finish to the 2022-2023 school year. Our students and staff finished strong. Our graduation assembly was wonderful and our 8th graders did a fantastic job sharing memories and thanks. Our 7th graders were ready to ring that bell and they did a phenomenal job. We were glad so many parents joined us for that bell ringing celebration.
With summer, some students can experience a loss of school and a yearning for that predictable routine. This is not unusual and is normal. Keeping a consistent schedule such as bed times and engaging students in activities is a great approach. We know many students will be attending camps and so forth which is awesome. We will miss our students and hope they are active and read a lot this summer!
Over the course of the summer, the building is cleaned and readied for next year. People like Amanda Perry, Geoff Tomlinson and I are all in and out of the building based on vacation schedules. The best way to reach us is via email and sometimes responses are not as immediate.
With 2022-2023 behind us, we now turn our focus to 2023-2024. Behind the scenes we have done a lot of review and reflection this year. There are some shifts that you can expect next year. First, we will be launching our new student information system ALMA in August. Details will come out in August for you to access your parent portal where you will see your child's grades next year and be able to communicate with your child's teachers. Second, we will be shifting to a consistent five day schedule. This will mean our middle schoolers will have shorter blocks and see all of their teachers every day. Our lower schoolers can expect having their specials on specific days all year ie PE on Wednesday for example. We believe this is a shift that will create more consistency for students, families and staff. We are excited for these changes.
Please enjoy the last bit of information and pictures from this year!
The next newsletter will hit your inbox in August when we will send out our beginning of year details! Our first day of school is August 30th!
As always, please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions. Have a wonderful remainder of June and July!
Regards,
John P. D'Entremont, Principal

Alumni Breakfast by Mrs. Damren
One of the best and most rewarding traditions at Lyme School is our annual Alumni breakfast. Each year, the staff hosts a reunion of sorts as we invite the senior class, who four years earlier, graduated eighth grade from Lyme School.
This year, we welcomed the senior class of 2023 and vast majority of that class came to celebrate and share their successes and future plans. They then attended our Friday morning meeting , where they were recognized in front of a large community crowd.
Seeing these young adults brings such joy and we could not more proud of being part of their journey. They are headed for amazing things! Good luck, class of 2023. We love you!!

Have a safe and healthy summer!
Information and forms from the Nurse's office will be sent as we get closer to the start of the 2023-2024 school year including:
- Daily Medication Administration and/or Emergency Medication
- Allergy or Emergency Action plans
- Immunization requirements
The Influenza vaccine clinic for Lyme School students is scheduled for October 31, 2023
Incoming 7th Graders!
Happy first day of Summer Break!
Tdap vaccination is required for a student's entry into 7th grade.
The Tdap vaccine can prevent tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis.
- Adolescents should receive a single dose of Tdap, preferably at age 11 or 12 years to boost their immunity.
- Babies and young children get shots called DTap to help protect them from diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. As children get older, the protection from these shots starts to decrease.
- The Tdap vaccine helps protect your preteen or teen from these same diseases
Please send in an updated immunization record before the start of the 2023-2024 school year with documentation of the Tdap vaccine for your child.
Email me if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Kati Miller RN BSN

Counselor Stanton's Corner
Hello Lyme School Families!
We wrapped up Stanton Time 22-23 with some gratitude, team building, and FUN for our K-5th students. Kindergarten, first, and second graders created some very thoughtful notes and cards of thanks to their current teachers and ed assistants - highlighting their positive qualities and what they enjoyed about their year. It was very sweet. Third graders ended their time by starting their first of many Stanton Time challenges and did a fantastic job of cooperating and supporting each other - ask them about the big jump rope ;-). Fourth graders ended their year with some collaborative and silly fun, reminding us how important connection and play are to building our community and having shared experiences. Fifth graders had a chance to ask questions, share worries, and hear reassurances from their peers about middle school next year - we talked about advisories, subjects, new teachers, and other changes they will experience. We also focused on the assets they have built over the years during their time at Lyme especially as fifth graders. We ended their lower school career in Stanton Time with some whole grade fun in the gym. Ask them about the plate game! I am looking forward to folding these folks into the middle school and advisory program!
We also said goodbye to Ms. Richter our school counseling intern! She will be working at Windsor Middle School with their school counseling team. We wish her well and appreciate all the time she spent with us learning, connecting, and having fun! Best of luck on this next journey!
Below are some things to keep in mind over the summer which comes from this article. Although school is not in session, a lot of research supports how maintaining routines during the summer is helpful to kids health (sleep, mood, brain and physical health). The timing might look different from a regular school week, but consistency with some novelty is suggested.
Simple ways to keep structure during summer
Mollie Grow, MD, MPH, a pediatrician at Seattle Children’s Hospital says that simple things, like waking kids up at the same time every day, can help provide some structure during the carefree summer months. She offers six ideas parents can use this summer:
Daily routines – regular wake up, eating and bed times – even if shifted later for the long daysfind balance
Summer school - Hot Tip: gtomlinson@lymeschool.org has sent information about our programming for this summer!
Summer competitions – summer reading programs at the local library or summer sports leagues
Camps – educational, sports or overnight
Scheduled family trips
Volunteering in the community or finding a neighborhood job, for older children
What a fantastic year of learning and growing for our students! I wish you all a fun and relaxing summer. We can’t wait to see you all in August!
With Gusto!

Protect Against Online Threats and Risks This Summer by Teaching Children about Internet Safety
From the US Department of Homeland Security: Online Safety Resources and Tips for Families and School Communities
June marks Internet Safety Month and the start of summer break across the country. With children and adolescents potentially spending more time online over the next few months, it’s important to know they can encounter a range of potential safety threats and risks in the digital world, including cyberbullying, online exploitation, and cyber criminals.
Teaching children about digital risks and how to avoid them can be one of the most effective ways to help young people make smart and safe choices in their online interactions. This new SchoolSafety.gov infographic outlines the issue of online safety and provides tips, strategies, and aligned resources specifically geared towards parents and guardians, school communities, and students.
Online threats can jeopardize children's digital experiences and devices and put their sensitive and personal information at risk. They can also have profound and lasting impacts on youth mental health and physical and emotional well-being, and for certain individuals, can present or accelerate a pathway to destructive behaviors. Young people, however, can take a variety of simple, everyday actions to be cyber safe and better protect against digital dangers.
Learn more about online safety, and reference and share the SchoolSafety.gov resource infographic this summer and throughout the year.
Safe Social Network Resources
It is important families are aware of what is out there and it is hard keeping up with technology.
We understand that all families are different. Some families decide to give their child a phone earlier than others. Some families have iPads, iPods, chromebooks, tablets and other devices at home and others do not. Regardless of your situation, it is important to keep the lines of communication open with your child and to pay attention to their online activities regardless of device. There are tons of resources out there for you.
This site has some basic general information about social media: what parents should know.
This site is helpful to reinforce messaging at home about social media.
This site is quite useful for families to navigate different platforms and parental controls.
There are also resources out there to help stay connected with your teen. Here are some helpful tips. Here is an example of more formalized training.
Thank you for your partnership and continued communication with us to ensure our students are being responsible online.

The Specials Spotlight
Field Day
One of the most fun traditions at Lyme School is field day and our bell ring ceremony. Both culminate a great school year and a sense of community. Even Chief O’Keefe came by to join in on this annual event.
Our K-5 field was led by our middle school advisories. Our older students could not have done a more outstanding job! They demonstrated tremendous leadership in ensuring that our younger students had fun and enjoyed their last day of school. They gave us a lot to be proud of!
Happy summer! Wishing you all a healthy and happy July and August .
From the Music Room by Ms. O'Leary
We ended the year strong in the music room! A few classes got to try their hand at the accordion and others got to get up close and personal with the physics of how a piano makes sound! Wishing everyone a happy and safe summer!
Does this shirt fit? by Mr. Harkins
1st graders are learning about clothing vocabulary in Spanish class! Students tried on some clothes and we determined as a class if the clothes "le queda bien" (fits) each of our models. We had fun!

Seventh Grade Tape Mural
As you enter the stairwell by the art room you will see a child's bedroom. A bed, dresser, two windows (one with a cityscape), a carpet with many toys scattered about. These tiny details will later appear the higher you go. As you ascend, you will see that the designs get weirder, more disoriented, not of this world because you are entering this little kid's dream. On the first set of stairs, you will be entering an optical illusion. Blocks that seem off...almost like they are changing...into a city? No, it's changing again! You've now reached the top door and you are at the weirdest part of the dream. Flying pigs, huge snakes, a really smiley guy, upside down mountains with a neighborhood on top. Is that a sun plugged into the wall? Yes, well you are in a dream anything can happen...
This tape mural was created by the 7th grade for their end of the year project. We are learning how to make 3-D shapes with angles and how we can turn anything 3-D. Thank you for exploring our dream.

I'm happy to announce that I'll be offering a STEM-based design camp this summer!
The camp will run August 14th-18th from 8:30-noon. It is open to rising 3rd through 6th graders. (Current 2nd through 5th grade)
The goal of Design Camp will be to have lots of fun doing a variety of hands-on design/build activities. We will be based in the Design Lab and many of the challenges will also take us outside. Activities may include water balloon launchers, gliders, hot air balloons, egg-drop, water bottle rockets, and more!
Please click here to register your child, or print the attached registration form and submit it to the Lyme School main office. Once the registration is complete, I will send along confirmation and payment information.
Thanks for your interest and consideration. Please let me know if you have any questions.
