Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit you have taught the hearts of the faithful. In the same Spirit help us to relish what is right and always rejoice in your consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

From Mr Will
Dear Community Members,
Welcome to midterm, with a short 9-week term, we are already in Lent and at the mid-point of Term 1, before you know it, Easter will be upon us. This is a good time to take stock of the term so far and celebrate what has been achieved already. I have been so impressed with our start at Holy Spirit. All our students have now settled into their new classes and are displaying themselves so wonderfully across the school.
Going Overboard
We are lucky, aren’t we? To live in such an amazing country, to be amongst great people and to be connected to this wonderful school community. I have just finished reading/listening to Boy Overboard, a fantastic book by Morris Gleitzman, which my son is reading for his Year 6 English unit and our own Year 6 class at Holy Spirit have also been learning about.
It tells the story of a boy, Jamal, and his family who flee their native Afghanistan for Australia. The description of their journey travelling by illegal boat to Australia is not a true story as such, but a collection of tales from many people’s experiences. It is a story that fills you with an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Gratitude that our children will never need to face such hardships in their own life. Gratitude that we have exceptional educators who are building perspective in our students. Gratitude that by our children simply being born in a country such as Australia that they have already won the lottery of life.
If you are searching for a new book to read, have a commute longer than 10 minutes or would like to have a sense of gratitude brought upon you or your family, I would highly recommend this book to you.
Learning about this story made me reflect on the great gift we have during the Lenten season; to be self-reflective. It is a time to be reminded of the many gifts we have in life and how we can always strive to be better Catholic people. Isn’t it funny how life sometimes teaches you things when you least expect it?
The Power of Conversation
We have a great culture at Holy Spirit, which actively promotes collaboration between parents, students and teachers. We endeavour to communicate in such a way that is easily accessible, regular and timely. There are various methods in which we do this, and we are constantly looking at ways to improve.
Whilst I advocate for electronic communication for information sharing and updates. I have spoken to staff about the need for conversations either face to face or over the phone when the matters are pastoral in nature.
In these situations, hearing tone in a voice or expressions on faces matter. They convey the care our staff have for your child and their wellbeing. If at any stage you have issues and concerns, I would always advocate for you to have a conversation either in person or over the phone. I would discourage late night emails or long electronic communications.
I live by a mantra that if an email is 2 or more paragraphs to a single recipient, it is time to pick up the phone. The problem resolved then and there rather than one email leading to another and another, where tone can be misconstrued and misinterpreted.
Please help me in supporting our community and continuing our exceptional culture by advocating for more conversations when dealing with issues.
Tutoring/ Therapy Update
There are many students in our school who receive extra tuition to assist with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) or other diagnosed conditions through NDIS funding.
As you can appreciate schools have many moving parts and limited spaces. Decisions are made based on priority based on the needs of our students. Permission for extra tuition from an outside educator can only be granted from myself and will only be allowed if it is conducted outside of class instructional time or if your child has an SLD that the tuition is directly impacting. At present we have hit a critical mass point in terms of space allocation for the many outside tutors/therapists that we have in our school throughout the week.
If you are interested in your children being tutored simply to supplement their education and they don’t have an SLD. I would ask that this is conducted outside of school instructional time and at home.
