TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
VOL 6 ISSUE 9
PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
You should have received a few emails this week regarding parent surveys and Red Ribbon Week. If you are not receiving these messages, please check you other folders, and be sure the school has the most updated email for you. It is also important to make sure we have accurate phone numbers for phone blasts and emergencies.
Students and staff will also be participating in school-based surveys. The data from these surveys helps us make important decisions, know what needs to be improved, and what we are doing well. The survey questions are created from the accreditation service Cognia. Survey data is shared with all stakeholders once its finalized.
Red Ribbon Week is a reminder that OSES values good character just as much as textbook education. We hope that our school climate provides each student with a sense of belonging. Not everyday is easy for students, staff, and parents, but how we learn and grow from conflicts will make future situations easier. Good grades are only half the equation. An engineer needs to know how to work cooperatively and understand their designs can improve the quality of life and help others.
“Good character is not formed in a week or a month. It is created little by little, day by day. Protracted and patient effort is needed to develop good character.” –Heraclitus

Curriculum and Testing Updates
Our K-5 students started W.I.N. (What I Need) Time this month. This program allows students to focus on their learning needs, promoting growth and success. In addition, Grade 5 has completed the first Science Progress Monitor Activity, covering all Quarter 1 benchmarks. The makeup day is Monday, October 23rd.
Let's not forget the Fall for AR challenge. Keep up the fantastic work, everyone! We're amazed by the enthusiasm and dedication shown towards reading.
Contact Ms. Carter (Cayce.Carter@orlandoscience.org) with any questions.
THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Ms Laura
This week Kindergarten raced along in our canned food drive! So many cans have already been collected and more are still coming making this a very close race. We've had a lot of fun presenting our pumpkin projects and learning all about characters and setting.
FIRST
Vancol
Mrs. Vancol's first graders have been getting into the fall spirit with investigating pumpkins! Students had to measure their pumpkin's height and circumference and estimate the number of seeds inside based on the age of the pumpkin. The seed hypothesis was then tested by scooping and counting the seeds! The students enjoyed counting the seeds more, as the roasted pumpkin seeds were far less slimy than the ones straight out of the pumpkin! Once the seed piles were counted, the students used two and three-digit addition to find the total of each pumpkin, then ordered the numbers from least to greatest and create inequalities.
Reminders for all of first grade:
10/25: First Grade STEM Day - Volunteers Needed
10/30: Pumpkin Book Projects Due
11/13: Fall Feast (all adults must be Additions-approved)
12/1: Field Trip Forms and Payment for Gatorland Due
DiNuzzo
Extra Math Additions
SECOND
Sanico
In our class we learned how to apply the compensation method to find the sum of two-digit numbers. My students showed enthusiasm and full attention when we were doing our centers, students were engaged and understood our lesson. Thank you so much for all your support. Please do AR at home consistently and help them working on their Homeworks.
THIRD
Patel
In Ms. Patel's class! Our students have been learning all into the world of plants by planting lima beans as we start our new science unit. In addition to our green-thumb, we've been working on our long division skills in math and learning different text structures in ELA . The second quarter has indeed started on a positive note, filled with learning and enthusiasm.
FOURTH
Mateer
Quarter 2 has started already! The year is flying by. Before we know it, it’ll be the second semester. Mr. Mateer’s class isn’t letting this time go to waste, however. We’ve been up to so much amazing learning. Showing their reading skills off, we began a module in ELA dedicated to amazing heroic feats. In addition, we’re starting a novel study of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. It’s an electrifying story about an unlikely hero. In math, get ready to get to the bottom of things in division as we start our new topic. In science, we built catapults to begin our unit on forces and motion. What will we learn about how things move? Be sure to ask to find out! And keep an eye out for Mr. Mateer’s class first Student Led Newsletter, coming soon!
FIFTH
Leighvard
Hi Amazing Parents and Teachers, this week for math, we studied multiplication and division of multi-digit numbers with decimals to the hundredth value. Students were also able to complete lessons in science on the earth’s place in space, and also the nature of science.
To conclude the week, fifth grade science classes were privileged to have representatives from the Orlando Science Museum, who skillfully and interestingly conducted class propjets on water conservation, and the water cycle. It was both academically enlightening, and held students spellbound. Thank you, administrators, and Orlando Science Museum, we appreciate and applaud you again.
OUC visiting
This week fifth grade students enjoyed the OUC Water Conservation Program. Students used the Engineering Design Process to create a Green Roof Design. OUC invites you and your family to Celebrate Science Night at Orlando Science Center!
When: Wednesday, December 20th from 5:30-8:30PM

O'Connor STEM
This week in the STEM Lab, we created a carrier to help our ghost fly down a zipline. The tricky part was making the ride last 4 full seconds.
Fun Fact: The higher an object it, the more potential energy it has. The more potential energy an object has, the more kinetic (motion) energy it releases. This is why higher is faster.
McAdams- PE
This week in physical education Mrs. McAdams class worked on the rules and concepts of playing volleyball. They also continued their attempts at running a full marathon. To date, the school has a total mileage of 6,264 miles which equals 239 marathons!
Our top five runners are Logan, Thomas Jonathan, Sahas, Victor, and Sadajit.
Our first fourth grader to run a full marathon is Ashar.
Mile Kids!
SIXTH
Dilek- Turkish
In 6th grade Turkish class this week, students had been learning about the colors, classroom objects and students' belongings in Turkish . They practiced their Turkish by asking and answering questions to one another in the target language and they had fun playing the " Turkish board game" , prepared by Mrs. Dilek, to review and practice what they have learned. Attached are the pictures from this fun activity!
