Mask and Covid Updates from Dr. Ryba

Please see Dr. Ryba's email sent on January 14th, which includes full detail to the information listed below. Thank you for your support as we transitioned back after break and moving forward:

Effective January 18, 2022, masking will return to be highly recommended, but not required for all SCS buildings during and after school hours.
Masks are Still Required on School Buses. Just a friendly reminder that per the CDC, students riding a school bus to / from school or for athletic trips are required to wear a mask. Please remember to have your child keep some masks in his / her bag so that they are prepared for riding the school bus. The students have done a phenomenal job with this requirement the past two weeks, so let’s keep it going!
Masks are Still Required for Mask to Stay / Isolation Protocols. As a reminder, if your child is identified as a direct contact at school and is in the Mask to Stay quarantine protocol or is able to return on Day 6 of isolation due to having no symptoms, students must wear their mask through Day 10 of the quarantine / isolation period
Social Distancing / Seating. At this time, we will maintain our current social distancing measures in terms of classroom desk arrangement and lunch procedures
Visitors. Guidelines for visitors will follow the same plan that was in effect prior to winter break. You can click here to access our established visitor requirements
Reporting Positive Results and/or Quarantines. Throughout the week, you may call your attendance line to report your child(ren) positive or if there is a need for them to quarantine based on a family/friend exposure. You may then be contacted by the building nurse and/or principal. Over the weekend, you may use our reporting link and either our Covid Coordinator or district nurse will get back to you with further instructions / information.

Drop Off Procedures

We are so grateful for everyone's attempt to follow our parking lot and drop off procedures. This week we saw all of our students dropped off, and into our parking lot by 7:50! Great gains and all due to your support and cooperation. Please continue to work together and follow our guidelines, as it is working.

Reminders:

No parking prior to 7:40 along the curb lane- please park in a parking spot in the main lot
Pull as far up as possible along the curb until the stop sign when actively dropping off your student
Park in the parking lot prior to 7:40 rather than parking and waiting along the curb
Encourage your student to use the crosswalk and both Door S and the Main doors

We have enjoyed waving and chatting with parents in the morning, too, while helping with these changes. Thanks for being so pleasant, positive and receptive.

Student Advisory Committee

Big thanks to our Student Advisory Committee for creating a clubs and organization survey for all students this week, advocating for student clubs and interests. These students also presented at our SMS Staff meeting, requesting staff support as well. Great job to this awesome student group!

7th Grade Basketball

The 7th grade boys GREEN basketball team has been a joy to watch perform thus far. Entering into the last month of the season, the team has all but lived up to its own personal expectations: to win. Led by a sensational and all around player in Sami Dari, the team has all come together with some exciting wins and a close loss. Adrian Fuentes has stepped up into a scorer role with a few "outbursts" this season. Omar Qulok has taken individual defense to another level. Ian Murray has rounded into form, being the big guy we all needed. Laith Mahmoud has become an instant 3 point shot specialist in games. Nathan Rodak has the motor of a 2020 B58 Turbocharged BMW. Max Krabec and Owen Galla have their games rounding into form. Alex Whitte and Mo Yasin have provided strong productive minutes in each game. Rounding out the squad is Mo Abuhamdeh and Ahmad Abuhamdeh come to practice each and everyday willing to "show up and show out". This team has amassed a 5-1 record with 3 games left to play. They head into the tournament in early February with an "X" on our back, knowing teams will give us their best shot. The team has championship aspirations and Coach Wilson can not be any more proud. Looking forward to the rest of the season. Go Mustangs!!

Parent Teacher Conferences 2/9 and 2/10

Parent Teacher Conferences will be February 9th (In-Person) and February 10th (Virtual). Teachers will reach out to request a conference from you, however, all parents can request a conference as well. Please see communication from your team leaders and/or Voyager teachers. Thank you.

Student Assembly 1/27/2022

We are looking forward to having Mr. Keith Hawkins, motivational speaker, come to SMS on January 27th to speak to students in 6-8th grade. Students will experience a 1 hour assembly with Mr. Hawkins on the topic of: Leadership , empathy, success for all students, value, inclusiveness and respect on our campus.

Select students will have an opportunity to work in a small group workshop with him as well in the afternoon of the 27th. We look forward to this experience for our students

Mustang Mentors

Representatives from 7th and 8th grade were nominated and trained to be Mustang Mentors. One of their areas of service is to learn leadership skills, character lessons and to teach our 6th graders good choices that support P R I D E and Model Mustang. Great job to our Mustang Mentors this week and the lesson they delivered on RESPECT.

Thank you to Anna Placeway, Mackenzie Teague, Rayaan Muhammad, Anjali Kissoon for their creation of this lesson and collaboration with our PBIS Staff team. Great job!
