Falcon Flyer
Belong. Inspire. Grow.
Straight from the Hardt
Hello Ridgeline Families—
As we close out the first semester, I am reminded that not only are we gearing up for second semester, we’re already looking ahead to next school year. I noticed in today’s Flyer we have our Future Falcon Family Night coming up in March for our incoming 9th graders. That means 2024-25 registration for current 9-11 begins later this month. Be on the look-out for that.
We’ve got a lot of students doing amazing things to celebrate across all athletics, academics, activities, and the arts! A couple highlights from this week…Thursday morning we sent off our Falcon Cheerleaders and Falcon Robotics teams to their respective state competitions! You’ll also see some of our talented chess players who swept the top three places in our district tournament.
Today I enjoyed experiencing a performance of “The Bells” by Edgar Allan Poe featuring Mrs. McGrath’s 3rd period freshman English class(pictured here). They were experimenting with sound devices in poetry to create deeper meaning. It was very enlightening!
If you’re looking for fun activities for your student, remember we have the Winter Formal happening next Saturday, Feb. 10. First step…show up! After that, the music, dancing, and good times with your friends will make it a fun night to remember.
Another cool event coming up for students and parents is our Falcon Fashion Show where our student models showcase formal where for this year’s senior prom. Hosted by FBLA this fundraiser provides a glimpse into fashion and gives them some extra funds for competitive travel events!
And just for you parents, the slow-pitch softball team is providing supervised and safe child-care for parents who want to have a date night for Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. Reserve your spot today!
Also, tomorrow night, the senior class of 2024 parents are hosting the Mardi Gras dinner/auction fundraiser. Another way to enjoy a night out and support our senior night following graduation!
You should have received your ballots for our upcoming Levy in the mail. You are encouraged to get your vote in! To get more details about the two levy measures please go to CVSD.org.
At the bottom of today’s Flyer is a PSA from law enforcement about a new form of fentanyl that has shown up in the county. Please check it out and have another talk with your kids about never taking anything you’re not sure where it came from.
There’s much more cool stuff to enjoy today. Stay informed, read the Flyer.
Make it a great weekend! --Mr. Hardt
Student Services
RHS hosted Eastern Washington University Senior Admission Advisor, Mandy Lee, in the Counseling and Student Services Center on Wednesday, January 31. Mandy helped a number of RHS seniors submit admission applications, offering them the opportunity to receive renewable scholarships worth $1000-3000!
University of Portland Student Reception
If you have a senior who was admitted to the University of Portland (for next fall), or if you have a student who would simply like to learn more about the institution, the University cordially invites to a student/family reception at the Steam Plant on Thursday, February 8, at 6:30 PM. Registration is required, so please have your student access this link and register if your student wishes to attend.
Additional FAFSA/WASFA Support
In addition to the FAFSA/WASFA completion supports RHS is promoting via collaborative partners STCU and the CSF, Communities in Schools liaison, Kiara Wiedman, will host an EWU financial aid professional at University High School who can help support students and families in the filing process. The event will be held from 6:00 – 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 8. And, if you happen to need Spanish-speaking support for the FAFSA or the WASFA, staff members from Nuestras Raices will be on hand to support your efforts. To ensure you are able to complete the process, please make sure you and your student have registered for your FSAID ahead of time; it takes 1-3 days to verify the FSAID.
Spring Semester ASVAB Testing
Do you have a junior or senior who either did not pass his/her SBAC or one who has a desire to enlist in the military? If your answer is to one or both of these questions is “yes,” RHS will offer the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) on Wednesday, February 28. As an information item, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) offers Washington students multiple ways to meet their Graduation Pathway requirement, with the first being the SBAC (passing Math and English tests taken sophomore year). For those students who do not pass the SBAC, OSPI offers SEVEN ALTERNATE graduation pathways, and taking the ASVAB is ONE of them. Re-taking the SBAC is also one them. NOTE: While the ASVAB is used by the US military to help place enlistees in jobs, the scores from the test will NOT be released to the military automatically. Students interested in military service will need to release their scores to the military.
If your student wants/needs to register for the ASVAB, please encourage the student to access the Google Classroom and complete the form Mr. Spraggins posted earlier this week NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14. If you and/or your student have questions, please contact the grade level counselor or Mr. Spraggins (bspraggins@cvsd.org).
Dual Credit/Running Start Meeting Resources
Last Wednesday night, January 24, RHS hosted a virtual Dual Credit/Running Start meeting, together with the Community Colleges of Spokane and Eastern Washington University. If you or your student were unable to attend but wanted to, you can view the recording of the event by accessing this link. You will also find the slide deck from Ms. Teske's AP presentation posted here. If you and/or your student has questions, please contact your student’s grade level counselor! (Note: Mark your calendars for the mandatory Running Start meeting on Wednesday, February 21, if your student plans to apply to one of the three Running Start programs at EWU, SCC, or SFCC. Watch this space for more information!)

Both of their paintings thoughtfully reflect on their cultures, heritage, and their connections with them. Several incredible Ridgeline artists are submitting artwork to the regional competition this year, so stay tuned for more art! Good luck at the competition Falcon artists!
Falcon Chess
At the CVSD Valley Checkmate Championship on 1/19, our Falcon chess players did an awesome job! The tournament was a 5-round swiss system 15-minute time control. Ridgeline Falcons took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in our district. Grant Brito was 1st (score 4), Landen Hernandez was 2nd (score 4), and Kyler Stoddard was 3rd (score 3.5). Congrats to them and all our chess players who participated, we had the biggest and best team! It was a fun tourney and we hope to make the CVSD Valley Checkmate Championship an annual tradition! Fabric & Apparel students
Students in Fabric and Apparel 1 have been busy working on several projects this semester, including felt monsters, pillowcases, PJ pants, and these adorable keychains and hand embroidered pouches. Students had the opportunity to design their pouches using Canva OR hand draw their designs before embroidering. Fabric and Apparel 1 is a one semester course in Family and Consumer Sciences (students can earn CTE or Art credit) followed by Fabric and Apparel 2 and accompanied by Fashion Club and FCCLA.
Graphic Arts
The Graphic Arts classes have been working hard on developing their personal brand identity. After gathering a descriptive word list from friends and family, and creating a mood board to help them determine how to visually portray their identity, they created these personal brand logos using the industry standard application, Adobe Illustrator in the Adobe Creative Suite. These are all vector-based, so they can be resized and placed on any size document. They also had to come up with a personal tagline/slogan to accompany their logos. They also used these logos to create their own personal brand stationary which included a brand letterhead and envelope. Great work bringing out the best of yourselves, Falcons! I think we have some future graphic designers in our midst!

Message from Officer Howard
The picture shown below is a new form of fentanyl, called “pink rose”, that has recently hit the streets in our area. While we have not yet seen this in our schools, I wanted to put out some awareness about this, especially since it is made to look like heart shaped candy and we are approaching valentines day. This is allegedly approximately three times stronger than the fentanyl we have commonly seen commonly known as “mexi blues” (counterfeit Percocet m30). Be aware if you see this around, please use gloves when handling as fentanyl can be transdermal (transmitted through contact with the skin).
