Pre-College Summer Programs
Information for WBHS * Updated Jan. '25 by Mrs. Noelle Essig
Make it a Meaningful Summer
Hey, Laker Nation!
What are your plans this summer?
Consider using your summer to explore a potential career path by participating in a pre-college summer program offered by colleges or universities. These programs come in a variety of formats—on-campus or virtual—and differ in cost, length, intensity, and location. We've compiled a list of summer programs available across the U.S. to help you get started. Keep in mind that many colleges not listed also offer pre-college opportunities, so an online search might uncover even more options.
While exploring these enriching experiences, please note that we cannot officially endorse any specific program. Many programs have early application deadlines and tend to fill up quickly, but scholarships may be available to help with costs.
Important Note: Many of these programs are "pay-to-play" opportunities, meaning they are not typically a factor in college admissions decisions. However, they are an good way to explore career interests, build connections, and get a taste of college life.
Another fantastic way to spend your summer is by working or volunteering. These experiences can be invaluable for building your resume and gaining real-world skills.

Perry Initiative-Women in Science and Engineering
What is PVE?
The Perry Virtual Experience is a free, 2.5-hour, interactive online experience for high school and college-aged students who are interested in pursuing careers in orthopaedics and/or engineering. Women and all gender identities are welcome. Participants will hear from women leaders in these fields and dive into online mock orthopaedic surgery simulations and biomechanics experiments.
Perry Outreach Program alumnae are welcome to register for a PVE session. If you are new to the Perry Initiative, participating in the PVE will not disqualify you from a POP at a later date.
How can I attend?
You are welcome to register for any session that works for your schedule, and you can find those on our upcoming program calendar. Please only register for one session. Sessions have limited capacity and will be filled first come, first serve. The unique registration link for each Perry Virtual Experience session can be found on the calendar event page.
When is PVE?
We offer 2-3 sessions of the Perry Virtual Experience monthly. Sessions are either Saturday morning, Saturday mid-day or weekday evening depending on your time zone. New events are added periodically, so if all sessions you see are currently full please check back soon for new events.
Before you register
Please check your schedule carefully before applying to the program. Applying to the program when you cannot attend takes a spot away from someone who was interested and available.
Make sure you have access to a stable internet connection on computer or laptop with a keyboard, camera, and Zoom capabilities ahead of time. Even though we cannot all be together in person, this will be an interactive experience and one that cannot be achieved on your cell phone.

The Hidden Engineering Inside Buildings
College of Engineering
Max number of students: 20
You might not think about it very often, but everything in a building—the materials used to build it, the parts inside it, from its frame to wiring to walls to doors— has to be designed and engineered. The growing profession of architectural engineering deals with the engineering designs that are integrated into building systems and the architecture of the building itself. Included are lighting systems, electrical systems, mechanical systems like heating and air conditioning, and the structures themselves. This camp will teach you some of the fundamental knowledge needed to understand these systems, and how they are integrated into the building envelope. Through a series of lectures, hands-on experiments, demonstrations and activities, you will explore the engineering designs that make an architect’s vision unfold.

Exploring subjects such as perception, communication, learning, memory, decision-making, motivation, love, hunger, and art. We will try to answer questions like: Why do we sleep and dream? Why are men often more aggressive than women? Do animals see colors? Why do we feel fear and happiness? Do people interact differently in social media? How much of our brain do we actually use? This camp involves students from two different countries and cultures in a collaborative research project.

Iacocca Institute
Iacocca Global Entrepreneurship Intensive
Iacocca Institute IGEI
The Iacocca Global Entrepreneurship Intensive is a four-week, immersive, experiential learning opportunity for high school students to develop skills in entrepreneurship, innovation, the basics of business, intercultural understanding and leadership. At the Iacocca Institute, we prepare participants to take on complex, multi-system, global challenges in creative and collaborative ways.
Learn About the Program
IGEI 2025
Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship at Iacocca means seeing opportunities to make things work better. For some, it looks like starting a business to provide a product or service that people didn’t even know they needed. For others, it means taking a tedious, wasteful, or broken process and fixing it. Still others might observe where people or places have been overlooked and under-resourced, and see potential where others saw only problems. What unites these and all instances of entrepreneurship is the drive to move beyond the way things have always been and achieve something better for people, communities, and the world.
Leadership
At IGEI, leadership does not mean always being the loudest, the most talkative, or the bossiest person in a group, nor is success in this program measured by individual achievement. Instead, all challenges and projects are team endeavors, where each member is required to contribute what is needed for the team’s success. Participants learn by experience that teams whose members use their strengths to support and uplift one another consistently outperform those in which individuals vie for the spotlight. Here, leaders take bold risks in service of a common goal achieved through shared effort.
Intercultural Effectiveness
Being intercultural means celebrating a diversity of traditions and recognizing difference as something that enriches the human experience when approached with curiosity, openness, and respect. At the same time, the global challenges the world faces require global solutions, and success will depend on the ability to make common cause with others of wildly different experience and worldview. What makes us different needs not negate what unites us: at IGEI, we reject zero-sum thinking in favor of civil discourse, appreciation of difference, and recognition of our shared humanity.
The Iacocca Global Entrepreneurship Intensive includes:
Civil Discourse Leadership Seminar

Minority Engineering Program
The Minority Engineering Program (MEP) at Purdue University was initiated in 1974 as one of several initiatives to improve diversity and inclusion in the College of Engineering. MEP is committed to engineering research and knowledge sharing with the international community through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. The program was named for Don and Liz Thompson in 2022.
Although MEP strives to attract students from historically underrepresented groups, namely African American, Hispanic American and Native American, programs are open to all. MEP has been the key to Purdue's successful graduation of more than 3,000 engineering underrepresented minority students to date. It is because of this success that other colleges and universities across the country have adopted MEP's model.

Technology and Transcendence
Sunday, July 6 – Friday, July 11, 2025: Scientific Ambition and the Human Condition- Should there be limits to the pursuit of technology? In the Greek myth, Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to human beings. In Aeschylus’ classic, it is a blessing and a curse for us, and Prometheus is punished for his transgression. This myth is archetypal for the deepest questions that surround our ambivalent experience of technology. Sample authors and works include Aeschylus, "Prometheus Bound," Shelley, "Frankenstein," Hans Jonas, Heidegger, Erwin Straus; Nollet, Galvani, Volta. Film: "Modern Times," "Le Jetée," "Blade Runner."
American Experiment
Sunday, July 13 – Friday, July 18, 2025: In his Gettysburg Address, Lincoln posed a question: “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.” What kind of test, what kind of experiment, does American democracy represent? Sample readings include Plutarch’s Lives, Aristotle’s "Politics," Locke’s "Second Treatise of Government," Tocqueville’s "Democracy in America," the US Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, The Federalist Papers, and speeches by Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr.
Shakespearean Drama and Poetry
Sunday, July 20 – Friday, July 25, 2025: An exploration of the human soul and its condition through readings in tragedy, comedy, and the short poem. The action of both Oedipus Rex and Macbeth is propelled by prophecies, which Oedipus attempts to avoid and Macbeth attempts to fulfill, both becoming kings in the process, each with problems at home, the former caught up in a fateful situation from which there is no good way out, the latter in a situation seemingly brought about by a series of free and culpable choices. Authors and Works: Shakespeare: "Macbeth," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," sonnets, Sophocles, Aristophanes "The Birds," and Sappho’s poems.

Sunday, June 22 – Friday, June 27, 2025: Pascal’s wager, Pascal’s principle, Pascal’s triangle… these are just a few of the fundamental concepts in philosophy, science, and mathematics that owe their discovery to Blaise Pascal. A true exemplar of intellectual curiosity, Pascal sought truth wherever it could be found, from moments of deep self-reflection to long hours in the laboratory. Sample readings include "The Pensées," "Conics," and Pascal’s triangle.
Stoics
Sunday, June 29 – Friday, July 4, 2025: It is a fact of human life that we do not always get to choose what befalls us. The whims of fortune are blind to our desires and intentions, and the hand we are dealt is often a far cry from the one we might have wanted. Confronting this reality could inspire helplessness and despair; but for the stoic philosopher, that confrontation marks the starting point of human happiness and empowerment. We may not be masters of fate, but perhaps we can be masters of ourselves. Sample readings will include Marcus Aurelius’s "Meditations," Epictetus’ "Handbook," and selections from Cicero.
Nature and Law
Sunday, July 6 – Friday, July 11, 2025: From ancient times to the modern era, the movements of the stars and planets have fascinated human beings. Their cyclical regularity inspired the astronomers Ptolemy and Copernicus to seek out the laws that govern their motions, and to wonder about the origins of those laws: are they divine? Mathematical? Natural? Eternal? Do the same laws somehow govern us? Sample readings will be from authors such as Hobbes, Galileo, and 2nd century Greek mathematician Claudius Ptolemy.
